I have had mild to moderate acne for a long time, occasionally cystic. It's often triggered by hormones, but not only. I'm 31.

After all these years, I finally made an appointment with a dermatologist. I was expected (or hoping?) to get a retinoid prescription, since it's great for aging skin and it has really helped a few of my friends with acne. However, the dermatologist right away prescribed me Clindamycin as well as a daily oral antibiotic, which he said I would have to take indefinitely. When I asked him about retinoids, he was not please and replied that it is not appropriate for inflammatory acne and the only options I had were antibiotics or Accutane.

I have had problems with bacterial imbalance, so I don't like the idea of taking antibiotics, especially not for the rest of my life! And the cream he prescribed in 10% BP with antibiotics, too.

Should I just go to another derm or is he right about retinoids not working with inflammatory acne?

Thanks!!

I would get a secondary opinion. You have a lot more options than just antibiotics or accutane. And if its mild to moderate, I really don't see why he would jump the gun to prescribing accutane. Also, it seems weird that he would prescribe you antibiotics indefinitely.

Are you taking BCP? Have you looked into spiro? I think there are a lot of other options for you, and you shouldn't just settle for a lazy derm who wants to get your money and get you out the door as soon as possible.

Good luck!

that doesn't sound right to me either. i have inflammatory acne and my doc prescribed a dapsone topical twice a day, retinoid at night regimen indefinitely. he prescribed antibiotics for the first month. i wouldn't take antibiotics indefinitely... retinoids on the other hand get better with time. definitely see someone else.

I have inflammatory issues as well, I'm 30, and the retinoid was the first line of treatment that was used. I'd get another opinion. If you're not comfortable taking antibiotics, then don't.
