My Spiro + Bc + Everything Else You Can Imagine Log

So, I've decided to do a log on progress with the regimen prescribed by my dermatologist. I had written up a lengthy post before the board upgrades, but it's gone and I don't feel like doing that again(I'm lazy).

I'm dealing with hormonal acne, lots of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and an incredibly dull, grey looking skin tone. The dullness is my own doing. I plan on doing weekly updates. Granted, the PIH won't change that much after a week, but the breakouts should see some reduction.

Without further ado...

Morning:

80 mg Solodyn

Ortho Tri-Cyclen

50 mg Spironolactone

Clindamycin + Melquin (after washing and completely drying face)

Evening:

Differin 0.3% Gel (after washing and completely drying face)

If I get too dry, I have 100% argan oil that I use to moisturize my face. I know it's a source of debate here, but I will mention that my nutrition is very good. I'm vegetarian and eat 95% vegan. What I do eat are nutritious, whole foods and some junk here and there. I also get plenty of exercise via running, weight lifting, dance classes, and walking my dog(I'm hoping the Spiro will help me lose a little weight as well!).

And here's the damage I'm trying to fix:

Week 1 is done! Here's what I see regarding my skin so far:

  • dryness/tightness - my skin isn't nearly as oily as it has been. I live in a very humid climate. Usually, my face is an oil slick after it rains. So far, it hasn't freaked out much

  • initial breakout - the oh so dreaded. Even though I was on minocycline, I still experienced an IB. It wasn't major, though.

    Other things:

    • thirst is majorly increased. I am drinking a ton of water(more than I usually drink)

    • indigestion is like WHOA. I'm not a fan.

    • appetite is a bit supressed. I have had one day where I'm more voracious than others, but nothing much else

I'm not expecting to see any change in the dullness in my skin yet. I'm excited to see that, though. Oh, and you can't see it in my pictures thanks to my lovely black bar, but I have a gnarly looking PIH spot on the side of my nose between my eyes.

I've had stop using the Differin every night. It made my skin way dry and peel-y and it wasn't good. I'm now using it every other night. I also used a scrub from Makeup Artist's Choice to get some of the nasty dry-ness off and it worked wonders. Hopefully, I will have some progress to update this week instead of picture that just look the same(or worse!).

Hey, MomOfGirl! I'm glad I'm not just talking to myself. I realize people may be looking at this post and don't know what to say, but it's nice to know that I'm not out here alone in my process.

My week 2 update:

  • Still breaking out a bit. I never get cysts or nodules, but annoying pustules and papules. They seem to have migrated from their favorite spot on my chin, forehead, and cheeks to the sides on my nose. Those are easily extracted and don't leave marks, so I steam and use my extraction tool to get rid of those.

  • My skin is still a little dry on the cheeks. This is really normal for me, I haven't scrubbed again with my MUAC microscrub, but I may do that tonight. I have a wedding to attend on Friday, so I want to look decent. I'm also considering tinted moisturizer to help with evening things out and controlling the flakes.

  • Skin tone seems to have improved. My complexion seems to be evening out more on my cheeks.

    Other things:

    • My sleep has improved a bit, but it was horrible last night and that will be clear in my pictures. I find that my skin looks SO much better when I sleep enough. I only slept about 4.5 hours last night. sleep.png

    • My mom said that she can see a huge difference in the cluster of PIH between my brows. This has always and forever been my problem area. I'm actually getting something this weekend to conceal that nonsense. YES.

    • That line down the right side of my face is PIH from a chemical burn. Never a-freaking-gain!

    Ugh...the dreaded photos...

End of week 3!

  • I'm breaking out less but still getting a few pustules and papules. I have been eating more dairy than usual, though. I'm planning on cutting out dairy 100% starting tomorrow. I want to see if cutting out dairy completely will further clear me up.

  • I've moved back to using the Differin everyday. My skin seems to be handling the change much better.

  • My skin is quite dry right now. I'm actually glad. YAY for flaking skin! I'll MUAC microscrub again this week to freshen up the look

Oh! Look! I have lips!

Hi there,

Wishing you the best of luck with your new routine! I use Differin too and I absolutely love it. After you get through these initial few months you will be getting many compliments. :) Argan oil is great with Differin, I use it too. It helps with the PIH as well as gives a nice glow and banishes flakies. Hopefully that scrub you bought is pretty gentle, don't want to aggravate your skin more. Looking forward to your next update!

Thanks, Cali! Yep, the scrub is gentle. I rarely use it, though. Only when the flakes get to be too much.

  • My skin is drinking the Differin like it doesn't care and is completely unaffected by it. GAH! This always happens to me and my retinols!

  • I actually got to see my first hormonal breakout. Usually, my face is so cluttered that I have no idea that I breakout when my cycle comes. This time, I had two pustules crop up. Interesting!

  • My dose of Spiro is now 100 mg. Hope this makes some further improvement.

  • I've started drinking lemon water in the morning and it's making me even thirstier, so my water intake is crazy right now.

  • No dairy since Sunday. I expect it will take a few weeks before I see marked improvement from that.
