...how you know for sure if something is a cyst or nodule and not just a regular pimple?

I know it's a stupid question, and I've read the description of the different types of acne several times and looked at pictures, but I'm still confused. Sometimes pictures show cysts/nodules as being really big, and other ones look small. How do you tell the difference between the severe type of acne and the mild/moderate one?

A cyst/nodule is when the pimple is under the skin. Meaning, it's not just a whitehead or pus on the surface. If it is deep inside and hard, then it's a cyst. These can also be painful and tender to the touch. (This kind of confused me, too, for a while. But then I started getting them)

Thank you! That was much more helpful than the other descriptions I've been reading - but I'm still a little confused about it being deep in the skin.. how do you know if it's deep or not?

A lot of the spots I get are really painful to the touch, but the pain only lasts for a day or maybe two and then goes away (the spot itself stays for about a week or two though). Is that normal or could it be a cyst?

I don't know how to explain it... When you touch it or try to squeeze it, you'll feel it in there. Pimples on the surface can hurt, but you can feel it deeper with a cyst. They are usually kind of big, too (and a lot harder to get rid of). You can't just pop them and have the problem go away, since the bacteria and junk may spread or cause the skin around it to get really red.
