Parker's Accutane Log! I hope this works....

Recommended Posts

Thanks for reminding me to be patient Shannon! It's tough seeing things improve and then go to crap constantly. At this point I just really want this all to be done with so my skin can heal itself. I know its much better than it ever was before and I know it will be better when I get off of the medication. As for the foundation - I'm not even using any at the moment, just carefully placed concealer & pressed powder (both Clinique). I had switched to mineral makeup for awhile and then got frustrated because everything I tried always ended up looking orange on my oily skin by the end of the day. Got any recommendations? Thanks for the list too - this should be really helpful and I'm looking forward to checking my current regimen out!

Day 112 - 80mg (38 to go!):

Just over a month to go and back to not breaking out again. Still have some very red and peeling spots on my face from last weeks breakout but no new areas of concern. The tip of my nose is STILL peeling! It has been for months. I honestly doubt it will heal until I'm off the medicine. It looks horrible uncovered or covered with concealer. I can't win that battle. The texture of my skin has been getting better - losing all the bumps that have been below the surface. Every now and then I get a random red rashy spot - not acne - almost like inflamed eczema or something. They go away pretty quick though (with lotion).

Side effects are mostly the same. Dry eyes, dry lips. Dry scalp has eased some since I've been religious about only washing my hair every other day and moisturizing hair & scalp on the days I do wash it. The one really awful side effect that is not getting any better is the joint pain. Horrible horrible joint pain. Went for a non-strenuous hike with my husband yesterday (4.5 miles, mostly flat) and by late last night I was in so much pain. My heels, my hips & my lower back. Ibuprofen helped but OMG was it horrible until it kicked in.

Only 38 days to go (I hope!!!) and looking forward to getting back to a normal routine. Due to the joint pain I've had to all but stop exercising which has made me crabby and laaaaazy. Will be nice to give myself a kick in the ass to get active again when I can actually enjoy it.

Day 119 - 80mg (31 to go???):

so, yeah, by my calculations I should have 31 days to go, but my 4 month doc appt is this Friday, so I should really have 30 days past that day - so I guess I'm going to be a bit over 150 days - I actually have 34 days to go.

Skin is about the same as last week - no new updates really. No new pimples. Just healing the last two and my poor nose which is still peeling. Switched my makeup last Friday in the hopes that my sensitve skin will breathe more. Went back to Glo Minerals which I used over a year ago before switching to Clinique when I couldn't cover up the breakouts with mineral makeup. It feels nice to have less on my face. The one thing that continues to bother me is how unhealthy my skin looks in general since it's thinned out so much. Every scar and pit mark shows and it just looks blah. Hopefully it will regain some life once I'm off this stuff. I guess it's still better than huge painful cysts!

Side effects suck. I'm having a bit of a dry spell - i think more because of the weather than the medicine, but its still uncomfortable. I got a big ol dry patch on my upper midback that felt all scaly but wasn't too itchy. Lots of lotion is making it go away a little. My scalp has been itchy and flaky(!!). It was bad last night. I went to Sephora (I got a nifty $20 off card in the mail!) and picked up an Ojon hair treatment which REALLY moisturized my hair & scalp and it feels so much better today. The worst is that my joint pain has gotten much worse. Everything I do makes my back hurt. I went Christmas shopping yesterday and just the walk around town made my heels hurt later last night. I'm really looking forward to getting back to being active again once I get off this drug. I dream of running again!

Day 126 - 80mg (30 days to go - no, really this time!):

Added a few days on to my course. My appointment was supposed to be last Friday, but I had to reschedule it to today due to an urgent last minute meeting, so now I've added a few days to my course. Good news! Saw my doctor this morning and my labs are all okay! My triglycerides actually CAME DOWN this month and are back within the normal range. Don't know what I did (better food? less wine?) but it worked. I have two red nasty spots on my face right now but I would hardly call them actives. They're both more like recent actives just starting to heal. The rest of face is smooth and I finally feel like I'm in the clear. It's a great feeling. My derm said this will, in all likelihood, be my final month. If for some odd reason i still break out this month he'll consider a sixth month, but he doesn't think that will happen. Neither do I to be honest. I really feel like I'm past the crap now. It took me four months but I think I'm finally past it. Exhale...............

My side effects have not subsided. I still have dry lips, dry eyes, dry, itchy scalp, dry hands, dry arms and a fantastic eczema spot spack dab in the middle of my back! Oh, and my joints hurt to high heaven. I've been doing Christmas shopping on the weekends and after walking around all day my heels get to the point where they are so sore and tight that I limp around the house in the evenings. I look like an old granny. It's almost not funny anymore. BUT, it's almost over and so far I can say it's worth it. I really wish I would have done this sooner, although, I'm not sure my early twenties lifestyle would have allowed for it.

Day 134 - 80mg (22 days to go!):

Less than a month left and super excited!!! My face is actually clear. Shockingly clear. Sure, I have marks and scards and uneven skin tone and yada yada yada, but I have zero actives right now. I had a super mini pimple pop up on my jawline yesterday but it was down and completely gone by this morning. I have one red spot on my chin that keeps peeling, but its not a pimple. Really wish I would have done this sooner. If my face stays clear this will be amazing. I'm wearing less makeup (very little on the weekends) and it no longer takes me 15-20 minutes to cover everything up every morning before work. Seriously dot a few spots of concealer, brush with mineral powder makeup - done. I'm more worried about some scarring and hyperpigmentation that anything else. It's a huge relief.

Yes, my side effects still suck but I think they seem more manageable now that the end is in sight. My joints hurt (no gym in like two months) my lips are chapped and my scalp is flaky. All bad. I've gotten colds twice during my course. Maybe stress? I've had some hair loss, but nothing worse than when I've had thyroid trouble. At one point I had light peach fuzz type hair growing on my face. Happy to report that has almost gone away now. Still have a rash on the top of my hands, but it seems almost normal now. Cannot wait to finish my course and for my skin to get some life back in it (sans acne!!!). Just praying for a clear 3 weeks so my derm will declare my course done. Really don't want to do a 6th month since I seem clear. 80mgs/day for 5 months should be good, ya?

Yeah, I think 5 months on 80mgs is good. That's a pretty serious amount of the 'Tane. I'm at the end of my third month right now, and I'm practically clear. It's been about a week since I got my last pimple, and 2 1/2 weeks ago was my second to last one. I don't think that's too bad. I'd like to be perfectly clear, but I don't think that's too likely to happen. We'll see as the course progresses whether I get any more pimples or not.

I have my derm appointment tomorrow. I SERIOUSLY hope there was nothing wrong with my labs. I just want to get my next few packs of meds and get on with things.

I realize you're most of the way through your last month. I've heard it's only about 2-3 days after your last pill that the side effects go away! Good luck!

Day 141 - 80mg (15 days to go!):

My next derm appointment is two weeks from tomorrow and I cannot f-ing wait. My skin has for the most part stayed clear this month (month 5), but I've had a few spots I'm just referring to as "micro pimples". One is by my eyebrow and I'm fairly certain might just be a slightly irritated hair folicule (ingrown eyebrow??). The other was on my cheek and I really can't figure out if it was a mini micro zit or just a scratch to my uber sensitive skin. The stupid spot on my chin that I've had my entire course seems gone, but continues to peel despite my best efforts to moisturize it multiple times a day. What is odd, however, is that I seem to have new bumps under my skin around my chin area. I have noticed the bumps seem to pop up when I am relatively dehydrated and/or had alcohol recently (which kind of go hand in hand). The more hydrated I stay, the smoother my skin, less bumps, etc. Just hope it isn't a sign that once I go off Accutane the bumps will return and errupt into acne again. Please no, please no, please no.eusa_pray.gif Anybody else experience this??

My hands have been super rashy this week and my eyes super dry. I know some people report that their side effects lessen over their course but mine have just kind of kept steady all the way through. That's been a real bummer. On the bright side - only two weeks left. So I should be on the road to non-itchy dry skin & eyes in no time. cannot freaking wait.

4.5 days to go. No change to previous post, except it's been dry here so I've had a bloody nose almost every day this week. Boo. Only a handful of days left. Hopefully.

Yea! I have 7 more days to go. Oh so excited! Well, I'm quite nervous also. I'm clear, but littered with marks and scars. :( (Big sigh) Only time will tell what's permanent. Congrats on almost finishing. =)

Congrats to you too!! Exciting to be almost done - and relieved!! I hear you on the marks & scars. I'm hopeful they'll start fading once I'm off this stuff. Oh - and I REALLY want my skin to get back to the thickness it was BEFORE accutane. I feel like it's thin and sad at the moment. On your previous courses did your skin regain thickness/life afterwards (assuming you had the thinness issue - but maybe you didn't)??

You know, call me crazy but I really don't remember my skin being thin on my previous courses. You'd think I would, but I don't. I sure do have thin skin this time though. My thinking is since my skin was normal before accutane, then that must mean it returned to normal which means it should this time. Okay that was a little confusing, hope I made since.

So today was my FINAL derm appointment. hifive.gif That's the fantastic news. Labs were fine and my derm doesn't need to see me anymore. The bad news - he wants me to finish off the medicine I have left. Which is about two weeks. Which kind of sucks. But at this point, at least it's only two weeks, right? I've made it this far so I should be able to suck it up a few more days. I'm just bummed cause I was set on taking my last pill this morning. dry.png

So I ended up with the extra two weeks because my derm started me at 40mg/day for the first two weeks fo my course, but wrote the prescription for 80mg/day so I'd have it for the last two weeks of the first month. Make sense? I guess as of today I've taken 4.5 months at 80mg and .5 months at 40mg. If I take the next two weeks at 80mg I'll end up with a total of 5.5 months on the tane - 5 full months at 80mg and 2 weeks at 40mg.

I JUST WANT TO BE DONE! My scalp and lips and skin and eyes are begging for some relief from the dryness!!! That and I'm taking a few snowboarding trips soon and the last things I want to deal with are uber dry skin due to cold mountain air and crazy sore joints from being active while taking this stuff (my back has been killing me lately!!).

Oh, and final tidbits from derm - (1) 3-4 weeks for dryness to subside after my course is done, (2) Have to wait one year before treating any scars.

That's it!

I might go down to one pill a day for a week, and then one every other day, then one every third day, etc. just to keep the good side effects for as long as possible. When I was on 30 mgs/day I didn't have much in the way of bad side effects--just the good ones (I'm 125 lbs).

So...update. Went down to one 40mg pill/day last week and stopped taking my pills as of Saturday night. smile.png Since I went down from 80mg to 40mg to finish off my last few pills I started seeing the side effects decrease a bit. My skin is starting to look alive again (no more dull, lifeless, zombie skin) and I'm happy about that. Still having dry lips, dandruff, other dry skin issues. BUT, slooooooowly improving. My joint pain also seems to be subsiding a bit which is a big relief because it was getting really tiring. Oh! And no more rash on my hands! yay!!

My skin is still clear. I had a minor scare last week because I had some red areas pop up where I normally get breakouts. But they were more like dry spots that kind of flaked and got irritated after I went up to the super dry mountain air the weekend before. Those went away quick when I got more moisture on board.

Overall, I'm positive on my experience and my now clear skin. Plan to keep posting until everything is back to normal so I can give a final review.

Congratulations on your course. I hope everything works out for you! I am quite interested to see what my skin will look like once I go off Accutane.
