Why does nothing work?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm 22, have suffered from mild acne since I was about 15. Since then i've been on and off all the different antibiotics and creams that the doctors in the UK prescribe. My inital course cleared up my acne for a few months then it came back, since then I've had it on and off.

The doctor basically told me that he has given me every over the counter antibiotic he can, and because my acne is only mild that he wouldn't suggest anything strong (Roaccutane or w/e it is called). He referred my to a specialist skin nurse, she basically said the same and told me to keep using my Duac cream.

So I've been using Duac now for probably 4-5 weeks with no visible signs of it helping. My skin can be 99% clear one week, then the next one half of my face is full of red spots. When I look in the mirror at my skin I can see tiny bumps under the skin, and if I squeeze them (Which I don't anymore ever) stringy white stuff comes out. What is this?

I'm at my wits end, I have started seeing a new girl recently but she has only seen me when my skin is clear, I'm supposed to be seeing her tomorrow but right now I really don't want to. I'm so sick of having spots at almost 23 when nobody else I know has them.

If all these creams and antibiotics can't even cure mild acne then what good are they?

I'm about to give up hope..

5 weeks I've been on Duac cream, my acne is worse than it's been for ages, on my right side i have a few spots, and on my chin now two big red sore lumps have appeared.. So much for this cream that is supposed to be antibiotic..

How can there not be a way to get rid of mild acne?

I think he means Dan's Regimen.

You may be having an initial breakout due to the Duac, it's only been 5 weeks, you need to give it more time :)

I've seen the biggest change in my skin when I stopped masturbating for 3 weeks then cut it down to once every 5 days. Many say there is no correlation, but this has been the most reliable thing I can control. If I do it once every 5 days now, I know the next day I will look good again. Usually it is the 4th day that I notice I am at my worst but still not all that bad.

I also haven't used anything on my face for around 4 months (not even water) so I am positive this is what has had the biggest effect.

Hopefully if I keep it up it will get better and better because overall this month that I have done this, I have looked much better than the past months since I decided not to wash my face to better my skin tone and see what would happen. Just a spot here and there since I've kept this up.

What's funny, in comparison with all these regimens I see on here, is that I don't even wash my face...

This next month (August) should be interesting since I plan to stick to the plan completely (1:5days). This past month I got cocky and cheated + gave in a couple days in a row here and there. ;D

Definitely worth a try to test out how you react to abstaining.

Not sure if you are serious floating?

A friend has told me to not wash my face, but I mean.. when I'm sweaty as hell after the gym am I really supposed to not even let water run over it in the shower?

I mean I know some people have really bad acne and mine is only mind, but surely if it's mild it should be easily treated?

I've been putting off dates with this new girl for days now because of my skin :(

I am completely serious haha. Topicals ruined my skin and I was desperate to heal what they did, so I thought why not?

I don't go to the gym very often so I could see how it could feel gross, however I went to the Mediterranean this summer and sweated a lot under the sun and didn't get any breakouts. Sweat is actually mildly antibacterial cause it contains some salt.

Mine was very mild until I introduced bp and exfoliators a couple years ago. I can say now that that was what onset it to be acne. I think water is enough, but even while I was using water some months back, I still had these dry skin patches on my face near the sides of my nose. Haven't seen those in months now which tells me that my face is healing/can take care of itself. Abstaining though may be the key for me. If you want to try it, abstain for 10 days then only once every 5 days.

I feel I am finally over the hill and just wanted to share what is working for me (and at no price).

I am 22 too.

Ha sweet.. I guess it couldn't hurt to try..

I'm just sick of all these creams and tablets not working, but now I'm off the antibiotics I'm worried that it's gonna get worse and that they were actually holding off the acne whilst I was on them.. So I've had spots now since I was 14 on and off, I can go a few months with clear skin then they come back.. wtf is that about?

I'm 24, have had acne since I was probably around 15. I have also been on the prescription medicine merry go round with varying success. I have started getting clearer with a new diet.

Try changing your diet. If nothing else has work, I personally think it is worth giving a shot. What do you have to lose but bad skin?

That is very odd then if you can go a few months of being clear. If that was me i'd be celebration 'it's over, it's over' haha. I could only go about one week of being completely clear, but hey I'll take what I have going right now. The stress of having to physically control it is none existent whatsoever for me. I just wanted to get rid of as many factors that I could control, in order to see the outcome.

I am not saying not to wash, but just note your habits to see how they damage your skin.

On the diet aspect, I have been vegan since February of this year. Water only, lots of carbs from whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans and low fat.

I kind of doubt diet has any affect on me besides never getting sick.

A tip. Whenever you feel stressed, go outside and walk around (no sunglasses on, the brightness of the uv light is what needs to hit the eye in order to make you feel good). Also, keep your room well lit during the day with windows open. Again, UV light improves mood. Windows block out certain UV's.

Im just suggest something the OP may not have tried. If you read my topic post I have changed nothing else but my diet, and my skin has been the best its been in a long time.

I know everyone has different triggers for acne, and for some like me it seems to have to do a good amount with food.

If any of you were me right now, I am sure you would be living it up. It is clear now that I am no longer an acne sufferer anymore. I just looked in the mirror (which I very much try to avoid) and had one dot on my entire mug. I have control over it now. The fact though is that I am very much scarred from the past in relationships I blew off because of this crap. I guess we all just need time.

Don't wanna sound like a goody goody but my diet is already pretty good, I never drink fizzy drinks or soda and have a balanced diet and do lots of exercise, not because I make myself but because I've always been like this, parents never bought sweets or soda when we were growing up.

For the first time in ages I've got those big swollen spots under the skin that are really sore, two of em on my chin, they appeared yesterday and are really sore today, man they are depressing :(

I have a question. I know no one here might not believe me, but I don't do any of that. EVER.

I guess rhythm if I did it once a week instead of not doing it ever, do you think it would help with my skin?

You can sure try. I know that when I didn't do it for 3 weeks I started to break out worse than normal, so I did it, then waited and didn't for 5 days. I have seen good results since then.

I think it is all about doing it in moderation in seeing what works for you. I have read that on the 7th day of not doing it your hormones peak on that day so I thought I would do it a couple days before the 7th day and see what would happen.

Again, many say there is no correlation, but I have seen my fair share of people on here whose problem went away from abstaining up to a month, then doing it in moderation (rather than the possibility of offsetting another hormonal imbalance in doing it everyday again).

This probably wouldn't work for females because our hormonal system works differently.

PS my zits usually have had a tendency to pop out around the mouth/chin area which is known to be a hormonal zone. If yours do too, then it is quite possible you will see good improvement since we know all sorts of hormones go wild during and after the big O.

Wish you luck!

Ok floating I'm gonna give it a bash (Pun intended).

Tbh I have a very high sex drive, and being single and working at my PC all day at home.. well you can imagine the rest.

Should I just go cold turkey?

All it takes is will power. I recommend going 10 days without it, then bringing it down to every 5 days. If that is too hard, you can just straight up try every 5 days and see if it you see any results at all.

I've been putting off dates with this new girl for days now because of my skin :(

If a guy kept putting off dates with me I'd assume that he had better things to do than see me and therefore I'd sack him off.

Make your move Alex. Screw acne, don't be a bitch. Take the bull by the horns and other inspirational clichés
