I am finally starting accutane (with pictures)

Recommended Posts

I have decided that I am going to keep a log during my accutane treatment. I am also making YouTube videos, so I will post a link to that when it is done uploading. I explained a lot of my history with acne so you can just watch that if you want to know any of that. I am 17 years old, 140 lbs., and have had acne for 4 years. Today was my first day taking claravis. At the moment, I am on 40 mg per day. My doctor said my standard dosae will be 60 mg per day, which I I'll be starting in 2 months.

Anyways, today was kind of interesting. I am a pretty healthy kid. I watch my diet and I exercise on a regular basis. In the first half of the day I had to put chap stick on 6 times, my knee was aching for like 15 mins, and my legs randomly fell asleep (tingly feeling) at one point in the day. Before starting, I had to use my chap stick maybe once or twice a day, and I had never experienced the other two. It may be from starting at 40 mg and my body will adjust eventually? I am not really sure if it is all in my head because I have read up on a lot of accutane experiences and whatnot. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Day 2:

Today was a lot better than yesterday. I only had to put chapstick on once. I think it may be a result of me being at work all day today and my mind being on that versus it being on the accutane yesterday. I think my mind plays a role in it? Has anyone else experienced this? I felt completely normal today until I went for a run mile and a half run an hour ago. When I was running my joints felt a little stiff, and now my left knee (the one that was aching for 15 mins yesterday) is especially stiff/sore. Is it weird for me to be experiencing this right away? Or is this just a little "bump" in the road that I will get over... Everything else has been normal.

I am excited for you, I will be starting Accutane tomorrow once I get my prescription. Goodluck!

Did you already go to your pharmacy and try to fill the prescription? Because I had to wait an extra 2 days because walgreens had to fax a form to my derm who had to fax to my insurance who had to fax it back to walgreens. Let me know if you have to do this, and good luck with accutane!

That sounds like quite the process :P. But no, I live in Canada and have a skin specialist who faxed it to my pharmacy a couple days ago. I am very excited and will be following your log =D.

Lol yeah it was, I was all pumped to finally start and then my Dad calls and tells me what happened and I was so mad I had to wait more. Yeah, are you doing a log?

Day 3:

Today seemed pretty normal. I did not really experience any side effects. The back of my hands are a little dry, and my knees are a little stiff. I had a couple large nodules develop, I noticed them yesterday. I wouldn't really consider it an IB, but just everyday acne that I normally get. Yep, so today was pretty normal.

Hopefully your blood work doesn't take long! I am excited for you! I think logs are great, especially the pictures because you can see how you have progressed.

Day 4:

Today is pretty normal again, not much of an update. My knees are a little sore after my run, but nothing too noticeable (i'm not sure if the accutane is causing this or if it is because I just started running again). I don't know if you can tell in the pictures, but I feel like my acne is starting to go away or there is at least activity which tells me that the accutane is at least doing something. Moreover, my face is starting to peel a little bit.

Day 5:

Today was same as always. I didn't experience too many side effects. My lips went dry like twice but that is normal for me. None of my joints were aching at all today: not before, during, or after my daily run. The only thing I am starting to consistently experience is my face peeling. It started yesterday, mainly on my nose and scattered around my cheeks. Today it was peeling on my nose, upper lip, around my jaw bone, and scattered around my cheeks. Hopefully it doesn't progress to the point where people will notice it because my job involves working with people. I don't really see any drastic improvement in my acne, but I am still hopeful. I feel like it is approaching the point where I won't start getting any pimples, I'm not really sure.

Day 6:

Today is pretty much the same as yesterday except for my face is peeling a lot more. It still isn't too noticeable if I am a few feet away from the mirror though. No joint stiffness at all during my run today. My lips have been a little dry, but nothing too bad. Not really too much else.

Might I ask what facial cleanser/ moisturizer you're using?

I am not doing anything to my face. I am just letting the accutane run it's course. I have a Cerave moisturizer that I will use eventually when my face gets drier.

Oh wow. I don't think I am at the IB period yet, but I woke up with like 5-6 new pimples which is completely out of the ordinary. I am just hoping that it won't take too long to clear my face up at least a little bit because it would be a lot easier after that. Hopefully everything goes well for you :)

Day 7:

First of all, I misplaced the cord for my camera so I won't be able to upload my pictures until I find it :( Today was pretty interesting. My face was peeling a bit, which is becoming normal. This morning I took a shower and when I got out my face was dried out and I had to put my Cerave moisturizer on. In addition, I woke up to a bunch of new breakouts. I am not sure if this is from the accutane or what, but it is kind of annoying because there are some big ones.

Day 8:

I can't believe it has already been a week. It seems like just yesterday I was waiting anxiously to start. Anyways, I woke up to a couple new breakouts today, and my face was peeling even more. My face was extremely dry about 10 mins after, so I put some Cerave moisturizer on. I found myself using my chap stick a lot today. I think my face is starting to reduce its oil production.

Day 9:

My face was peeling a TON today. My ears were even peeling (i used to get pimples on my ear lobes a long time ago). I have had to use my chap stick a lot today also. My joints were fine all day today. After I took a cold shower (approx. 70 degree water) my face was very dried out so I had to use my moisturizer again. Also, my hands were kind of dry so I put some lotion on them.

Day 10:

Today was pretty normal. I had to use my chap stick a lot and put moisturizer on my face and hands after my cold shower. I feel like I am not seeing any improvement, and my face is getting worse. It doesn't really seem like an initial breakout but it could be. I am not really sure. I do know that the accutane is causing my to breakout though because I was breaking out maybe 2 or 3 times a week prior to starting and that was when I wasn't doing anything to my face for a whole month. I am just going to keep taking the pills and hope for the best.

Day 11:

Today was normal again. My face was dry and peeling a bit, and my lips are super duper dry. My knee started aching a bit while I was running, but I think that is just because I started thinking about the whole accutane thing right before. When I got my mind off of it the aching went away. Really, the only progression today is that my lips have been very very dry all day.

You're cute as. I have been on accutane for almost 4 whole months, and I have no acne at all. I don't really know what to say here but I want to wish you luck on your course, and you will be clear in no time! Stick to the chapstick all the time, it doesn't really improve, only gets dryer over time :P I'll keep track of your progress mate.

Keep popping those pills and not those zits! Adios
