i stalked acne.org for the past month trying to find if anyone has ever been through what i'm going through right now but no one's ever had the same exact symptoms

so i decided to start my own topic because after all, i have nothing to lose right? i only have information and advice to gain. i apologize in advance for my long run on sentences and just general disorganization. im not much of a writer =(

im going to ask the question here just in case people dont want to read the whole story

basically my question is:

has anyone ever used a topical steroid on their face for around half a year or more and experienced acne and clogged pores with redness all over? or know anyone that has? how long was the recovery and was there any permanent damage?

to start, im a female student currently attending university. i never had "acne" growing up. i usually get one cystic pimple on my nose during that time of the month and i never did anything to treat it. they went away within days.

but last summer, i had two cystic pimples on my nose and i found this topical steroid ointment in my room. of course, at the time i had no idea that it was a steroid. i was stupid and treated it as if it were the equivalent of vaseline. it was prescribed to me by my pediatrician a few years ago for a patch of dry skin on my eyelid so it was already expired when i first used it. the dry skin on my eyelid went away after i used the ointment once so i had a whole tube left.

so i decided to put the ointment on my two cystic pimples because i had no other acne cream available because up to this point in my life, i've only used water on my face and i had super clear skin. the ointment deflated those two cysts in a day and i was amazed at this miracle ointment so i continued using it each night from august 10 to the beginning of march 11 as a moisturizer. i was so naive and dumb to not have researched what it was before using it :naughty:

the ointment i used was mometasone furoate 1% and i applied it to my nose and the space between my eyebrows and forehead every night for i guess about 6 months. nothing really happened except that i noticed my cheeks were getting redder than normal around january but i thought it was due to the artificial heating used indoors during winter time. around the end of february, my cheeks and chin started getting these bumps that i thought were pimples. but i couldnt pop them and they werent inflamed. i wouldnt have even known they were on my face if i didnt see them in the mirror.

so i started applying the ointment onto these bumps nightly as well and then one day at the beginning of march, i just woke up to a face full of red bumps ALL OVER. i thought it was the new cleanser i bought so i kept using the ointment and when i finally decided to google "mometasone furoate" i finally realized that i had some symptoms of steroid induced rosacea.

righ now, my face is just constantly red and hot, its not just random flushing anymore. im asian and my skin is pale so the redness of my face is really obvious against the color of my neck and chest.

i went to the doctor after a week of it not getting better. she refused to listen to me and sort of snickered and said " you came here for your ACNE?!" so i asked for a referral to a derm.

the dermatologist didnt really acknowledge the part of my story where i used the ointment. i even bought the tube to show her. i told her how my face is burning hot and really uncomfortable even though the rest of my body was cold and she just said i had hard whiteheads stuck inside my skin and prescribed me tazorac cream, clindamycin gel and solodyn.

i used these two medications for 2 weeks until i had an allergic reaction to the solodyn and i went back immediately and she had already forgotten about the first time i've talked to her about the steroid use. i looked on my patient profile thingy while i was waiting for her and under my diagnosis was just "acne vulgaris".

this time, she prescribed me doryx and finacea. she didnt answer any my questions about steroid induced rosacea/acne and etc. she's also asian and she doesnt really speak english fluently. maybe its because asians are rarely afflicted with rosacea? so she doesnt have much experience dealing with this?

the tazorac made my pores ENLARGED and my nose bumpy so i stopped after 2 weeks but now a month later, my pores are still huge and the "hard white heads" are still all over my cheeks and forehead. my cheeks has the texture of an orange peel under certain lightings. i always had dry/normal skin before and now my face is constantly oily. im not sure if its due to the tazorac or the mometasone because its only oily around the areas i used the ointment.

im still taking the doryx and using the clindamycin gel only because i noticed that its helping the redness in my face and i no longer have the burning sensation. my face is still redder than normal though and the areas i used the ointment are now darker than the other areas of my face, like i tanned only those areas.

each and every single day, someone i know will ask me what happened to my face. if i was in their position, i guess i would ask too because i have never seen anyones face go from clear to bad in such a short period of time! i avoid people and i stay home if i dont have to go to school or work. i know i shouldnt let this affect me and take over my life but its so hard. im slowly accepting the way i currently look, except im worried to death about permanent damage.

currently:

i got another cyst on my nose last month due to my period and it (or the scar of it) is still on my nose . usually it goes away pretty fast! the tazorac seemed to have brought back all the other cysts i got during my lifetime and my nose is just bumpy as hell right now.

every pore on my cheeks and forehead seemed to be clogged with a hard whitehead. i popped one the other day and something like a grain of rice came out and it left a big icepick scar so im not picking them anymore. im really confused about whether this is steroid-induced acne/rosacea or not or whether the oiliness of the ointment clogged all my pores. i noticed that sometimes, one of the white heads get inflamed and i get like a real pimple.

also since i applied the ointment to my nose for the longest period of time, i noticed that now my nose is noticably darker the rest of my face. on my nose and cheeks, there many small blood vessels (telangiectasia?) when i stretch the skin tight will this go away with time?

sorry, i just wrote a LONG LONG LONG novel and probably put most of you to sleep already.

the other people that posted their story on this site really helped me out this past month but they stopped posting and i dont know whether they recovered or not.

if this doesnt clear up in another 2 or 3 months, im thinking of switching to a new derm and asking for accutane. but my face doesnt have any inflamed comedones so im not sure if it will help anyway.

heres one pic that i took with my phones not-so-good camera under really bad lighting of when it first started. my fore head has around the same amount of bumps too. as u can see, my nose got so big and bulbous as well =(

Hi Regretful

OMG! Your story mirrors my own:

I started with a small patch of dry irritated skin on the end of my nose about 3 years ago. I was insured at the time and a doctor prescribed triamcinolone cream. I was given 2 refills by the way.

Well it cleared it up, but then began the vicious cycle that I am only now aware of. I kept using it on & off for a couple of years. I finally ran out of the cream about a year ago. WHAT A NIGHTMARE! but it gets worse. A friend of mine gave me a tube of Fluocinonide (potent) which I used occasionally as well.

To make a long story short, after searching online, because I now do not have insurance, I also went the rosacea route, but I never fit the entire criteria. This is how I happened onto this site, addictedskin.com. The moment I read it, I stopped all steroid creams. This was in January of this year. By then, my nose (only where I had applied the cream) looked like a flaming red lumpy mess. I stopped going anywhere that I didn't absolutely have to go. I am washing with Dove unscented and using Eucerin cream. I do wear make up so that I can still go to work. I have to make a living.

After 4 months, my nose is still quite red, and for the most part the LARGER bumps have receeded to smaller ones, my nose is dry, tight and I look like a clown in bright light.

I used to be a very pretty, social woman and now I stay home and only go to work or the grocery store.

I have emailed with Kelly (the girl who started the site). She tells me it is quite a long healing process. Check out the website and let me know what you think. It is nice to know that you are not alone. I felt relief in just knowing I wasn't the only one.

omggg i sort of gave up on this thread because no one has replied in so long. im so glad i decided to check today!

im definitely going to check out the site right now

have you gone to a dermatologist or anything?

its been a little more than 2 months now for me and i DO see improvement. my cheeks are not as bumpy anymore but my forehead and nose seems to be redder and bumpier

i tried using makeup but nothing can hide the bumpiness and i just make my skin more irritated when i remove it.

thanks you so much for responding :)

i feel so much more relieved too

Glad things are looking better for you.

Yeah, I just suggest to go easy on your skin for a while. Just use a very gentle cleanser and some moisturizer.

I have yet to find a moisturizer as great as Carley's Clear and Smooth Exotic Butter and Midnight Moisturizers.

I highly HIGHLY recommend you try one of them as it will help calm your skin down so much. The downside is that you can only order it online from the site, but if you don't like it, you can send it back at any time (seriously...even like 3 years later...you can still send it back) and even if you used the whole bottle, and they'll give you a full refund.

I sound like an infommercial... Lol. But I love those moisturizers so much, I just want to share the love.

i used hydrocortisone butyrate on my face for about 2yrs. it was given to me for a patch under my face. i was told it would help my dry skin so every day i used it morning and night. this year i started getting patches on my face which the hydrocortisone did nothing to help. i was given a week of prednisone. my face cleared up beautifully until the last day of predisone. the next 3 days after finishing the pill my face blew up!! it was so red, literally like a thousand bumps under the skin and my face felt like sandpaper and was a bit swollen. i was given fluocinolone acetinide ointment to take till i "cleared up". noone at all mentioned over the past 2yrs the possibility of steroid rosacea. used that ointment till april. wasnt doing much cuz i would still get patchy and swollen. went to a new derm thats when i was put on doxycycline and elidel.

at first everything was ok not great..then 2 weeks ago my face got super itchy and bumpy. i was told my skin is flaring up and thats suppose to happen while my face adjusts to not using a steroid ointment. summer is coming and i just want to get better!! id love to know how long does this last?? when does it really start to get better???

the first dermatologist i went to said i had steroid rosacea and she prescribed me antibiotics (doryx) and it really helped with my redness. i had bumps all over everywhere (my friend described it as spiky lol) but they were white/skin colored and i noticed that they really went down after 1 month.

the 2nd month of this nightmare i broke out A LOT , i saw another dermatologist at the same office and he diagnosed me with steroid acne a month later because the bumps that were still present on my face erupted into BIG pimples. (not really sure if theyre cysts are not because some of them popped themselves and others i was able to pop myself)

my face STILL feels liek sandpaper and the skin color of my face is much darker than my neck now. but the only part of my face that stills flushes and is bright red is my right cheek.

im rambling a lot here but i just need to vent

i really think the steroid ointment made my skin weak as hell. i used to wash my face with burning hot water, scratch my face all the time, etc normal stuff and now i have to like splash water on my face bc its so damn sensitive. i wore a cap a couple of days ago and it made my forehead feel like the skin was being scraped off.

also whenever i had cuts or w,e on my face or healing zits, they healed so fast. now all the pimples i get take forever to heal and they leave purple-red spots and i even got a couple of ice pick scars. i think i have skin atrophy. plus the skin on my forehaed is kinda wrinkled looking now

so last week, i couldnt take the bumps anymore bc i realized that i only get breakouts where i had those bumps and i went for a facial/extraction. the facialist used a lancet and extracted like 50% of the bumps on my forehead and cheek. she only extracted the bumps that were clogged proes though.. not the little tiny ones i get where i flush.

now my face feels a lot smoother but i have scabs all over. im really scared that theyre going to leave scars bc my skin is so weak right now

anyways JAX and ROBIN please update me on your skin!

it really helps to know that im not the only one

im also on antibiotics pills and metrocream and elidel.im on the second month of using this stuff.i have good days when pimples dont looks as big or red but i still have alot of the tiny bumps under the skin. i really hate those! up close my skin does not look smooth at all. i dont know how long its gunna be like this and its kind of depressing..

foods i eat also seem to aggravate it so i cut down alot.

You guys sound like you're struggling a lot. I really hope things start looking up soon. Regretful, keep us updated about how those scabs heal up, please. I really hope they don't scar. Leave your poor skin alone, kiddo! It's already all exhausted from the steroids. Keep your heads up! :D

OH NO! You should not have touched the steroid in the first place!! When it comes to bumpy skin, only one of three things work:

1. AHA/BHA - exfoliate and unclog pores

2. Topical retinoids - I use retinaldehyde, which is as potent as Retin-A but less irritating.

3. BP

To alleviate irritation: Niacinamide with 10 percent concentration works. Also, use a super gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser.

I think the steroid irritated your skin or something. You must understand that steroids are more very serious acne only!!!

My acne is more of stress and abusing my moisturizer (it was quite rich), thereby, causing congestion. :)

I'm sure that the 3 topicals that you have stated will surely help in smoothing out bump skin and not only improving texture, but skin tone as well.

thanks guys for replying =)

so i dont think anyone really cares but heres an update lol

my face isnt as bumpy as when i first made this topic thanks to neutrogenas pore refining toner with aha and bha. i stopped using tazorac just because i felt like it was making my pores huge and it wasnt really helping... it made me all greasy too. like im already oily but when i used the tazorac, i could FEEL the oil on my face, like it was a film of oil or something.

i was on doryx for 2 months but i broke out all the time on it and now i have tons of red marks on my face that arent going away. ive been using aloe vera gel on them every night haha but i dont think i see any difference.

so yeaa... i ran out of pills 3 weeks ago and i refuse to go see my derm because he has terrible bedside manner. im still getting the same number of pimples so i dont think they were helping at all.

anyways i am really frustrated with my dermatologist because i feel like hes one of those doctors who's overbooks and sees each patient for less than a minute just so he can make tons of money. i already scheduled an appointment with another dermatologist for july7.

lately, every pimple has been giving me an indented scar

also the lumps on my nose, im convinced its sebaceous hyperplasia. i cant wait to go ask this new derm about it bc the one i've been seeing just told me to use the tazorac on it without even taking a look.

it also seems like i no longer have mild to moderate acne, but severe acne. sigh, i just want my old skin back.

i love venting here haha

Hey there! Glad your skin isn't as bumpy and that you booked another appointment with another dermatologist. I certainly know how you feel when doctors don't even take the time to listen to what you have to say.

Seems like you had already started scarring?

I wish you luck with your next derm!

Well I used "Differin" gel as perscribed by my physician!!

The hell it worked!! not only my scars looked darker and uglier i had suddenly black-heads in places where there were never any before!!!

I used it for 2 months and my face only got WORSE...... *wishing I cud smother my physician*

Now I only use "Minocycline" (A prescribed antibiotic for acne) and have stopped using Differin and already my acne has improved by 50% :)

I suggest you stop with any topical steroid creams all together...and stick to ur antibiotics

Just my experience
