Okay, so Im 17, turning 18 by the end of this year. I've heard this hormone excuse hundreds of times and its frustrating. I hate seeing people that don't even clean there face with anything except water and have flawless skin. I somewhat feel embarassed for my girlfriend, having to walk around with me attached to her arm. (Im really not too self concious when Im at school but when I come home and look at my face it just frustrates me.)

This is what I've done/tried:

Doctor:

-First thing when it started happening is I used Oxy Pads (I found out they aren't good for your skin because their concentration alters your skins pH and muffs everything up)

-Maybe a year later I went to the doctor and they prescribed me a topical Clindamycin (It was a clear alcohol smelling liquid). This worked maybe for 2 months but im pretty sure it lost its effectiveness.

- I went back to my doctor (No dermatologists are available near my area, around 2 hours away is the closest) and she prescribed me 2 topical treatements, one being Differin and the other being Clindoxyl Gel. These obviously were extremely drying and they were not effective whatsoever.

- I eventually got frustrated with my doctor because all she perscribed was topicals and thats not going to help the ance on my back as well unless she gave me 500 tubes...

-She then perscribed me Erythromycin because she said that I was still growing and Tetracycline wasn't a great choice, though it was more effective.. with these kind words of encouragement  I decided to rule out Accutane because it seemed waaay to strong and waay to many side effects (my mom took and it worked wonders but she had insanely upset stomachs which I wouldn't be able to deal with because I am lactose intolerant)

-The Erythromycin, yeah I took it, 4 pills a day (don't remember the dosage). It did nothing AT ALL after 4 months and I decided to get off that.. I haven't gone back to the doctors because they are almost no help.

Store Bought:

-Okay so I've tried Oxy Pads (wrong idea)

-I've tried moisturizers day and night (oil free, works really well to moisturize but no effect on acne)

-I've tried regular medicated facial cleansers (clear, non abrasive foaming washes)

-I've tried SLS free toothpastes

SIDE NOTE: I don't have any acne on my back anymore (dunno why) and only acne around my mouth and on my chin and very very little on my neck.

I read online that acne mainly around the mouth is hormone related, so I was like "hey! whatever then, Ill see what I can do about these hormones". I found out that low Zinc levels can be the cause of acne. (ie. you lose a signifigant amount of zinc during ejaculation I've heard)

Natural Methods:

-I've tried natural toners and cleaners made from teas and vinagers.. no change

-I'm currently taking Zinc supplements around 20mg a day, currently no change but it hasn't even been a month.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Facts about me, maybe they can help you draw a conclusion:

I am always clean.. I hate being dirty..

I was my face twice a day and use just a moisturizer as of now.. nothing else.

After my warm showers I splash my face with cold water to close my open pores.

I masturbate probably 3 times a week (which was a reason why i thought about the zinc. I don't break out after masturbating but my face doesn't better or anything)

I always have puddles of oil on the edges of my nose and on the space between my eyebrows but I don't get acne there at all...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So essentially I'm lost and have NO CLUE where to go with this.

My Acne is:

Bright red always..

Extremely Painful.

I get several white heads a day that are small but disappear the next day.

Acne is only around my mouth and chin nowhere else.

Clear fluid comes out when I squeeze them.

Cysts are either painful or hard when pressed and feel deep under the skin

I posted my acne in Severe Acne because I can have the same cyst for over a month without it changing and all my acne is extremely painful. Methods like Proactive and stuff aren't even on my mind because those are completely ineffective for me.

HELP! :( Hope someone can help.

uuuuurgh. I can understand your frustration, I'd like to hug you. If you're worried about accutane, you could try different antibiotics. Perhaps, a different doctor would be able to help. What about doxycycline for an antibiotic instead? You could also try taking saw palmetto to balance your hormones, some people seem to have luck with that. I haven't personally tried it.

I have a routine that is working really well for me right now, and we seem to have a similar type of blemish.

But Definitely go to GNC and buy their aloe vera gel in the little white tube - it makes redness go away, and makes the pain stop. Also I think getting some sun may benefit you, not as a long term thing but it will help dry your blemishes out and clear up the initial breakout making it easier for you to treat whats headed your way.

I would but I feel like antibiotics might not be the right solution if both clindamycin and erythromycin didn't do anything. I think theres something to be said about how there's only acne around my mouth, but I can't figure out why.

Haha its still winter out where I am so its difficult to be out in the sun without freezing my face off.

Aloe, I've never thought of that, I don't have that big an issue with the bumps because they are not so big, it's just they are really red so this could be a good idea. thanks :)

A couple days ago I had a popped blemish on my face bright red, and it was my first time trying the aloe gel, 4 hours later It was a light pink, I was so amped I put more on - and by the next morning the blemish was nearly my natural skin color. Doesn't fight the blemish just makes the redness disappear for some reason. & try a tanning bed

Clear fluid comes out when you squeeze them? That's interesting. This reminds me more of a fungal infection than acne, but acne takes many shapes and forms...

I think that if you want to give zinc a fair shake, you need to take more than 20mg a day. I took/have been taking zinc for a while, and I notice improvement around 50+mg (I actually took 100mg/day for a long time).

Really? I've read that you have to take low doses of Zinc or else you can get a copper deficiency. I have the capsules that are scored so they can be split in half. I could try the whole which is 40mg.

A fungal infection? I do get white heads though, so Im not sure if it could be that. I have had acne like this for over 4 years but its at its worst atm. I did however have mono (which was undiagnosed) and took an antiobiotic amoxicilin I think it was which I broke out in an insane rash. This could have led to something fungal but that was over 5 months ago, so I dunno. But I'll try taking the whole zinc instead of half.

You know what, I've been searching around the internet and I'm thinking a fungal infection sounds like it could be an issue. The acne is only around the mouth which can be related to Candida which can form after the use of antibiotics (I took both erythromycin and amoxicillin which I had a reaction to, the worse acne developped the weekend that i stopped taking the amoxcillin). Being only on my mouth I really think this could mean something..

I've had clear fluid, blood and whitish fluid in pimples. It could be a fungal infection or it could still be acne. I was always told that acne around the chin and mouth has to do with hormones, but then again people always say that! Maybe check out the diet and holistic section on this site and see what other people do?

HELP! :( Hope someone can help.

I just recently started using baby powder on my face. It's only a suggestion. I know a lot say that it will clog your pores. I took the risk anyway cause nothing I've been using is drying out/healing my acne. This past weekend I desperatly shopped for non comodogenic makeup - I don't wear make up but my acne was just getting out of hand it was getting embarrasing for me. I figured that if I'm going to put make-up on with all those ingrediants I don't even now anyting about, then baby powder couldn't be that bad. So i've been applying baby powder (with cornstarch with vitamin E and aloe vera) every night. So far so good. My acne is actually drying out. Trust me I have an extremely oily face. My flare up has calmed down dramatically. I've only done this for about four days so I don't know how it will affect my face in the long run. I hope this works! Also what's your diet like?

If you try this, let me know how it works out for you.

Hmmm... What's your shaving method? I break out on my legs when I use certain shave creams/gels.

I don't have much facial hair and only shave like once every month and only my upper lip. haha.

Hey dude, im in your same shoes, im 18 and in high school. Primarly my acne is centered around my chin and its very bad. like i have nodules from shaving and they wont go away. Im about to go to the dermatogligist to get accutane because that is the only thing that will get rid of it.

I used minocyline which is stronger than the two that you did. Its an oral antibiotic and it worked well at clearing acne but it doesnt get rid of blemishes or nodules which is what a i still have.

I would just reccommend that you get accutane. My mom and dad used it and theve had flawless skin since then

I had acne exactly like yours. I'm female btw. I'm also not that much older than you (22) and my face was actually WORSE Than yours, but still in the same areas. (chin/upper lip)

I went to my derm and she perscribed me a combination of things.

First of all in the morning, I wash my face with a facial wash called CeraVe. I highly reccommend this wash, as it's formulated BY physicians and laboratory specialists. It is so mild and leaves my face feeling incredibly soft and supple and perfect. It's never too oily or too dry.

After I was my face with CeraVe, I apply Acanya... which comes in a little Jar. Basically, Acanya is a Benzoyl Peroxide cream/gel that has clindamycin in it. So it's got a topical antibiotic as well as a drying agent.

I leave my face like that for about 10 minutes until it dries, and then go about my day.

At night, I wash with CeraVe once more, and then I apply Atralin, which is a retinoid cream. It is to be applied only at night because it is photosensitive. Here is the wiki page for it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tretinoin

A few things I can tip you with is the following:

1. Don't scrub your face with washcloths or anything abrasive when you wash your face. I made this mistake for the longest time, and what happens is the abrasiveness makes tiny cuts in your face where bacteria will settle and more acne will crop up. Just use your hands.

2. When you dry your face, don't wipe, just pat.

3. Use moisturizer. Again, CeraVe makes a great moisturizer that should be used in conjunction with their facial wash. When your face dries out, it overproduces oil which can also lead to breakouts.
