I can't live like this...

Recommended Posts

I made this post a couple of months back: http://www.acne.org/messageboard/severe-sw...se-t284319.html

Please read this all and try to help me because nobody knows what's wrong with me.

My face has NOT improved since then, it's actually gotten worse. I stopped the accutane 2/3 months into treatment as I was severely depressed and thought the side effects weren't worth it (If I got them).

I'm now on tetracycline (doxycycline does NOTHING for me) and a 7 day course of fluxoclaxillin for my acne cyst.

My life is ruined and I can't live like this. I've had this puffy face for OVER A YEAR and my doctors don't even know what it is!!!! My derm at first said the swelling was due to my acne inflamming my face, but then went back on his word a month or so into my accutane treatment and said NOTHING WAS WRONG, imagine someone saying that to you after this ruining your life for a year and you're thinking that you're finally on the road to recovery :doubt:.

I originally thought that the puffiness was due to my sinuses, went to see an ENT expert, he said it was acne. So then for the past year I've been thinking its swelling caused by the acne I have around my nose and cheeks. What I don't understand, is why it's not as bad on some days and MUCH MUCH WORSE other days, especially when I eat dairy.

If I don't drink 2.5l+ of water every day, the next day my face will be terrible. I think it may be something to do with water retention so I've been drinking more water but it's just a temporary fix.

The problem is that nobody has DIAGNOSED my problem and this is what makes me feel so helpless. Can't a doctor 'lool' inside my skin to see what's there? It could be infected fluid or something building up from my cysts. I have never seen someone have a puffy face like mine just because they've got acne. my whole nose has swollen, in particular the nose bridge in between the eyes, and some mornings I wake up, my eyebrow area droops over my eye.

I should add that I took anti-histamines for 1-2 weeks because my doctor thought it was an allergy but my face stayed the same. It's weird how, if it's acne, my face puffs up somewhat evenly, it definitely looks like some form of water retention doesn't it?

Pictures;

the first 2 images are from summer 2009 (What I used to look like)

the others are october 2010

All of these are recent (March-April 2011)

As you can see, I don't even have a nose bridge anymore, it's so wide. My eyelids droop down over my eyes. I've had this problem for so long now and nothing has helped me. I've been on every acne treatment (apart from creams and a full course of accutane).

Thanks in advance for your help.

im no expert, but could it be somewhat of a rosacea or ecszema type issue? its definitely not acne related, i think your derm is wrong. Acne does not inflame tissue or cells things like that... Rosacea alongisde acne can cause puffy features but usually the nose isnt very inflamed with rosacea but im not an expert.

i would first try to start googling each of your symptoms and all of them together to see if you can isolate it to some sort of diagnosis, if you havent already done so. many things can be googled simply by being extremely specific in the symptoms. even if you dont get the exact diagnosis, you could find similar conditions possibly with similar treatments..

its possible it could be a combination of things as well. like rosacea and something else.

its possible the pictures im seeing are after accutane so you had prior severe or moderate acne im guessing? because your completely clear now aside from the puffy/inflammed things you described, so your skin looks great at least acne free.

im gonna bump this hopefully someone is more experienced in this area to suggest a better course of action or can shed some light on possible conditions this could be.

I've tried looking on the internet and can't diagnose it myself. I have absolutely no idea what it could be, but I know water retention is involved as I have to drink lots of water. Yeah I stopped the accutane not long ago so my acne isn't very bad now but it's coming back slowly.

Thanks

Calm down.

You need to think clearly. If your current derm/doctor cannot figure out what is wrong, doesn't it make sense to seek a different derm/doctor?

does it hurt? You said diary makes it worse, and dairy is a common allergen which causes inflammation. I suggest getting an allergy/intolerance test and eliminate things causing inflammation. Also, start eating more anti-inflammatory foods.

I've probably seen about 8/9 different doctors, but yeah, you're right, I should see a different doctor. My derm said I should see a 'facial specialist', do you know the medical term for one?

No, it doesn't hurt although I can 'feel' the swelling. I went on a course of anti-histamines and my face stayed the same, does this mean that it's DEFINITELY not an allergy? All I've noticed is that if I eat pizza, the morning after my face is terrible (could be the salt). I'm positive that it's either water retention or 'fluid' in my face.

So the same acne cyst is still on the right side of your nose? And if so how long has it been there exactly?

Which one? I have one that is ON MY NOSE and it's small, then I've got the big one that's to the right of my nose. The small one has been there for over a year and the big one started developing in December, my derm said the only way of getting rid of them is removing them with surgery which will leave me with scars, and he said I should wait until my acne has cleared before removing them :doubt:

Okay, your dermo seems very incompetent, that is way too long for an acne cyst to be on your face. People seem to think its not acne related, and acne couldn't cause this but - if a cyst has had that amount of time to develop It has probably gotten very large, and infected under the skin. Something Like that on your face could easily cause the swelling of your entire area. At this point it may not even be considered an "acne" cyst anymore. If all that is true than I think you need to have them surgically removed - also have you ever tried popping them? If you screwed it up and they ruptured under the skin this could have spread infection throughout your entire face (have you tried anti-biotic btw?). but if you don't think that is the case I found these conditions that seem like a possible candidate

This is EXACTLY what I thought had happened, as originally I DID squeeze the cyst on my nose (2/3 times) so I thought that it had spread pus or whatever. Is there any way I can try and find out what is underneath my skin? And yes, I have been on Doxycycline, Fluxoclaxicillin and Tetracycline and they've had minimal effect. My derm isn't very good, I'm trying to go and see a different one. I have deep acne on my left cheek and I have no idea how to get rid of it, is accutane the only solution?

Well if you've tried anti biotic and it did not stop the swelling, then obviously a spread of the infection isn't the problem. Theres no need to see whats under your skin because whatever infection had spread would have been killed by the antibiotic. As for getting acne, that doesn't really seem your like major problem? The swelling of your face, and abnormality of it seems to be what worries you, and would worry myself in your shoes. My best guess is that The cysts that have been on your face for a long time by chance, diet, whatever factors may they may be - have been able to grow, and become infected to a point where anti biotic can no longer remove them. If I'm in your shoes I'm getting those suckers surgically removed, if that doesn't help then you know its not acne related at all-

It's scary that I've had this problem for so long and nothing has been done about it. Some doctors/my derm have even had the cheek to say it's my natural structure and that my face is changing because I'm growing! hahaha

The swelling started after I squeezed the acne cyst on my nose so it is linked to that in some way...

I do have deep acne on my cheeks which would obviously cause my cheeks to swell a little bit, but not my nose/eye area.

Thanks for your help.

Thats pretty Key info, it started after you squeezed the cyst - which probably means that your squeezing it didn't effectively kill it, and you only irritated it, and probably caused an infection. I see you having nothing to lose from having them removed, and potentially everything to gain (and if your worried about scars, your post says you can't live like this, and I know I couldn't either if I was in your position, a couple scars would be well worth it to me, especially considering theres plenty of awesome remedies for minimizing, and healing scars & a good dermo can specially cut/stitch to minimize a scar)

-Good luck

Thanks. I just don't think that the cysts 'being there' have got anything to do with the swelling, as whatever has happened is now a different thing altogether, I don't see how squeezing the cyst could swell my eyes/nose/forehead area unless there's some kind of fluid that has spread. I'm 18, I should be out enjoying myself not sitting inside waiting/hoping for the next set of tablets to work. I can't even go shopping for food some days because I look so bad. I'm going to see a different dermatologist asap. Thanks for your support.

squeezing the cyst didn't make your nose/forehead/eyes swell. squeezing the cyst could have irritated it, cause an infection, and caused it to grow to a larger size and more volatile form. The mere presence of a cyst like that could then cause your nose/forehead/eyes to swell - Look up pictures of people with random cysts - for example someone can have a cyst on their back similar to the larger one on your face - and it can cause a large surrounding area of their back to be inflamed, puffy, and abnormal. The body reacts to something being present that shouldn't be.

Okay, so I should get BOTH cysts removed? I think the big one is too active to be removed now, but the one on my nose definitely could. My derm said I should wait until my acne has gone though, because it could get infected again or something...

Well if you have that kind of patience than wait (Acne can go well into your thirties fyi). Seeing as the swelling started right after you irritated the cyst I think that its the pretty obvious cause of the swelling, if you remove it, I would think the problem would stop. And after I had them removed I'd make sure I educate myself on how to best manage my cystic acne so It can never become something like those two cysts have. and your dermo has a medical degree and I just have google and logic but the process of surgically removing a cyst literally cuts into the skin and pulls the entire cyst sack out of your skin - If its not in your skin anymore I don't see how it can get infected again anways.

have you thought about consuming turmeric which is a spice/root (depends on which form you buy it in) that greatly reduces inflammation.. it is also anti-bacterial and anti-septic

I suffered from large pimples and sometimes large cysts espeically around my nose area and chin. I have been using a prescription wash called PRASCION for a couple weeks now as well as a lotion you wear all day--has the same ingreadients in prascion plus 5% lotion...all my pimples are gone (knock on wood!!) and now i just have to get rid of my scarring. i HIGHLY recommend it. stop wasting money on store brand stuff and just go see your derm.

I don't use any creams or anything at the moment. I guess I need something to put on my skin to get rid of the oil, rather than shower all the time as this irritates my skin

You can absolutely buy turmeric pills, you can get them here where they happen to be on sale. I had chronic hives (urticaria) for about 8 months, frequently accompanied by facial swelling (angioedema) similar to yours. Among the various things I tried were turmeric and fish oil supplements, and replacing my daily water intake with iced decaf green tea. (I got an iced tea maker at Wal-mart, you can also get them on Amazon. I still drink iced green tea every day because I hate plain water.) Eventually my hives and swelling went away but I still don't why, or what caused them in the first place. Quite a large percentage of chronic urticaria/angioedema cases are idiopathic, meaning they NEVER figure out what caused them.

Also, I haven't read all the replies so I might have missed it, but have you tried taking Zyrtec? Other antihistamines didn't help me at all, but Zyrtec worked for awhile. Then it stopped working. But it might be worth a try.
