My Accutane Ride

whats up parsey? decided to pop in your log

i weigh 165 and my doc started me off on a high dosage for my weight. most doctors start you with a low dosage in order to ease you into the drug..and that is legit..you know, help your body get used to it. however,my doctor said "i don't waste any time and as long as the side effects are manageable i don't usually lower dosages or start with low dosages".

if the side effects are bothering you, then ask your doc to bump down your dosage. it will just prolong your course and clearing, but the reduced side effects may be worth it to you. you will still end up clear in the end.

haha thanks for checkin in..the last thing i wanna do is prolong the treatment, as we've already decided to cut it down a month by upping my dosage the last month. everything's going well now. dryness. more hair falling out when i rub my head but im taking your advice and ignoring that. had a pretty gnarley sore throat and now i've got an eye infection that sorta looks like pink eye, so i'm on antibiotics for that. all else is good. 2.5 months to go.

just an update: all is good..eye infection is clearing up. saw the derm a few days ago for my 2 month check up and he was thinking the redness is more due to dryness, which i agree with. can't believe i'll be done with month 2 in 7 days! Dose is being upped for the LAST TWO MONTHS. 120mg/day...AH! A little nervous for that, but it'll get me done in four months so i'll just have to grin and bear it. I'm hoping the side effects won't become to terrible with this high dosage cause i'm sorta still adjusting to this dosage. If there's anything wrong i'll just have to lower it again and go an extra month. Only really bad problem right now is fatigue. happy easter everyone!

also, anyone got a remedy for the corners of my lips being all cut up and chapped? i use aquaphor and burts bees on my lips but it doesnt really help those corner parts and they can't really heal cause the cuts rip back open when i open my mouth all day eating and talking

all is good..finished month 2 today..going to three pills a day (120mg total) starting tomorrow! very nervous for this cause i've been having trouble focusing on my studies as it is and upping the dose i assume will worsen the side effects (fatigue!!)..just in time for finals. Also, wicked sore throats lately. Drank a lot this weekend (I know, I know) but i hadn't done so for a month before, and it was my last weekend of the semester so I figured one weekend wouldn't kill me. No more drinking for the next two months. 60 more days..July 1st cant come soon enough.

Have to try to switch back to my normal dermatologist from home, but my derm here at school wasn't sure if he would accept me being on 120mg/day. I guess I could potentially continue it at 80 mg/day for the full five months, but I think summer would kill me. Got a crazy sunburn this weekend.

That's all..I'll check in later.

PS. comments are appreciated, I like to hear how other people are doing.

Day 2 of 120mg/day and I feel like I've been hit by a bus. Soo wiped out + trying to study for finals = bad. Have almost ten active pimples, boo. And the dryness has picked up after just a day on this dosage. Sore throat/cough are persisting, which I'm attributing to immune weakness cause the tane. Which led me to resort to my old ways of cruising the internet for accutane info, which is just scaring me more. I found an article posted on this message board by some guy who claims to have pinpointed the mechanism of isotretinoin function and he has some scary stuff to say. here's the article:

http://www.acne.org/messageboard/article-a...nd-t292462.html

If what he says is true, we're all doomed! So i'm back to the debate...do I stop my treatment now to save my overall health? it'd be a shame to have made it halfway just to quit.

My home dermatologist is out of the office until Friday, so I'm gonna have to wait until then to talk to him about all of this..blah.

Crazy stuff, this drug. Hope it's worth it.

A lot of times people come up with all these theories that seem plausible to uneducated people like us, but there are things missing when someone who really knows the subject takes a look at what they're saying. They'll say something like "Yeahhhhh this could happen but...." and give a reason.

I don't know how this shit works, but one thing that scares me are ultra high dosages. I feel like if your body is going to get permanently out of whack then the high dosage is what is going to do it. I personally would never take 120 mg.

And don't even bother asking your derm about those studies...most of them don't care. They just say "Accutane is a FDA approved medication, been around since the 80s and I haven't come across anyone who has experienced those side effects". They're doctors, not scientists. They go to med school and learn how to diagnose conditions based on textbook symptoms. They really don't know the biochemical mechanisms of how drugs work.

You can do what you want, but I'd rather stick with 80 mg for 5 months or whatever, rarely go outside, and wear sunscreen when I go get mail out of the mail box than to take 120 mg.

Good luck with finals dude

PS...I feel 100% normal just 6 months post accutane and have normal amounts of oil on my face. I get like 2 tiny pimples every 2 weeks.

to start off, let me give an update. i've got mucous membranes dryin up in WEIRD places. painful and/or itchy at times. crap. still sick. still studying for finals through it all.

i actually asked my cell bio teacher about this guy's article, and even he just referred me to a generic pharmacology article stating all the bullshit they feed you about not knowing how it works, but promoting its use even earlier in patients' treatment. so who knows. but apparently that nathan guy's article was used in a pharm. text, so it must be pretty legit. guess i'll see in 20 years haha.

for now i guess i'll keep going. as far as dosage, since i'm in between derms i've lowered myself to 100mg/day (120 then 80) cause the 120 was definitely too much, and you're right, it's pretty scary. that'll leave me around 135 after the four months, which i would say is a good ending dosage right? we'll see what my real derm thinks. i don't think i could handle the five months. especially because i'll be on vacation down south during the fifth month, and that would be mighty pointless if i were gonna sit inside all day.

2 tiny pimples seems great at this point, but aren't you kinda pissed this was supposed to be the end all and its not? im doing this so i can have zero pimples and lose my self-consciousness. two pimples means this will have all been for naught. right?

good luck on finals to you too. summer..so close.

I don't think it was all for nothing. In my 5-6 years of having acne, nothing has ever given me the kind of results accutane has...not even close for that matter. And to think of my routine with those other medicines? I would take countless antibiotics twice a day for 3.5 years straight (think of how this was even messing up your body a bit) while remaining conscious of avoiding dairy, then I would apply a morning topical and then I would apply a nighttime topical. Or having to worry about sleeping somewhere after getting drunk because I so desperately want to go home wash my face and to apply that topical so I reaped whatever little benefit I could.

So two tiny pimples every 2-3 weeks, to me, is the equivalent of being clear. I can go up to a girl at a party with 2 normal teenage pimples and a full tank of confidence. I can't go up to a girl with 8 pimples on my face, two of which are cysts, look like they're going to explode with blood at any point and have been lingering on my face for 2 weeks alone, and talk to her.

I might be kind of pissed if I always have 2 tiny pimples lingering on my face at all times, but even then I don't know. I'll settle with ever couple weeks.

Who knows? Maybe you'll be clear for good. But unfortunately, my derm said most patients end up like me. Acne returns, but very mildly and kept at bay with one simple topical lotion.

finally home for the summe! now i can more easily monitor everything and i won't be tempted to drink alcohol. My only health problem that i'm finding now is that my stomach has been feeling really queezy lately. My mom said that if this happened to tell her immediately (because of the high risk for ibs) but i dont want to just yet if its nothing serious. my fecal matter (didn't know how to say that in a not disgusting way) has been fine, i'm just really gassy, farting and burping a lot, and i have stomach cramps every once in a while. should i be worried that this is ibs?

to anybody who reads this, if you haven't noticed yet, i'm a bit of a hypochondriac. every small thing that's off in my body freaks me out. being on this medicine i feel like i'm justified in doing that though..i mean with all these potential symptoms, i don't want something to persist through my treatment and end up being a lifelong problem i have to deal with.

well, i'm officially off again. the stomach problems have persisted. it's to the point where i can't even eat anything because i feel so bloated/cramped up 24/7, and i've been off the medicine for three days. many times throughout the day i'll feel nauseous, like i'm gonna throw up. has anyone experienced this? i'm not sure if this is ibs or not, cause i have some friends with ibs and they don't experience this (at least i don't notice it ever). WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?

skin is pretty much clear for now, but i can feel the acne creeping back. all of this agony for 2.5 months for nothing. worst feeling in the world. blah.

skin is still feeling great. but my face is itching and i can feel the pimples comin back. still pretty upset about it all, and still feeling like crap. i'm callin my regular doctor tomorrow to figure out my stomach, and also calling the derm to cancel my appointment and let him know i'll be discontinuing treatment.

is it even worth staying with the derm for now? i've decided that since my skins clear now, i might just try to keep it that way with Dan's acne.org treatment, which I just ordered. I know the accutane clearing won't last because i didn't reach the neccesary dosage, but i can hope. Also gonna keep to healthy eating habits. and crossing my fingers. But since i've run my extensive course with antibiotics and countless topicals, proactiv, green tea treatment, etc. i don't know how else the dermatologist could treat me...

SO, i'm off. sad, but relieved that i can stop stressing about side effects. i gave it a try. i failed. on to the next step. good luck to everybody who reads this and is considering or in the midst of accutane treatment. I can only imagine how great the effects would have been if i went to completion. but alas, the side effects got me bad. just beware of the hair loss and potential for stomach problems, and also your immune susceptibility. and do your research, consider the long term effects. enough rambling for me. message me if you want to know more about my experiences.
