Benzaclin, anyone?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone on here is or has been on Benzaclin? And if so, what did you think of it? Oh and did you also use it once or twice a day. I have quite mild acne now, but a couple years ago it was moderate/severe and has been slowly clearing. I'm trying to get rid of stubbon zits that keep popping up and hoping this product will help!

Thanks!

Hi there. I used Benzaclin a couple of years ago. I liked it, but it's potent stuff. A little really goes a long way. I applied it once a day.

I started Benzaclin yesterday. I apply it once a day. The only noticeable change I've had so far is that my skin burns (whether from the benzaclin, moisturizer, or dry skin I do not know), is really red right after application and is flaky. It doesn't look terrible, though. Hope that it works out for you!

I started on Benzaclin and the antibiotic Doxyclicline end of December. Doctor told me to apply it twice a day but I think it irritated my skin a lot and I also got a lot of red blemishes from it. I changed it to once a day midway so my skin would get used to it and then saw the dermatologist last week and he told me to use this once a day (AM) and then use a retin-a cream at night. I also take the antibiotic pill once a day. Overall i think my skin has red blemishes (that it did not have before) and my skin is peeling/scaling but i'm hoping the retin a helps reduce the scars. I'm not breaking out much though so i guess it's working. What the derma told me is to be patient with this, it could take up to months before results show. I'm waiting patiently.... don't give up!

I was on it for a while over a year along with Minocycline. It worked AMAZING but eventually my body became used to the clindamycin and my skin became AWFUL!! If your acne is light to mild I do not reccommend it. The BP mixture is supposed to prolong antibiotic resistance, but eventually your body will start to get used to it.

I'm scared that my skin will get used to it and that I'll break out worse than before! I'm using it once a day, and my skin burns like HELL after putting it on. It's really awful- worse than a sunburn.

Same here! My face would turn bright bright red and burn like hell, and be pretty itchy. It also made me break out in tiny little red bumps all over which sucked. I am almost POSITIVE that i am allergic to it cause it was still doing that over 5 months later! I stopped using it about a week ago and it feels so much better.

I think benzaclin is the most effective treatment I've ever been on. I apply it once a day- like others said it is drying/irritating so I can't imagine using it twice a day. Make sure you have a good moisturizer for sure. Once my acne cleared up my derm kept trying to put me on something more gentle, but every time I went off the benzaclin my acne would come back in full force within a week or two. If it's really irritating your skin you can always skip a day too. I'm on several other medicines a day too but this is the one I use religioiusly (I drop others for a day if I'm getting too dry). I've been on it for almost four years now.

NeedAMiracle, you may very well be allergic. Another culprit for redness and burning is heavy application. A little pat of the stuff on a fingertip is all that's needed - a very fine layer for the entire face. The stuff is so potent and can wreak havoc when applied heavily like you would do with moisturizer. I'm not sure if you two were applying it this way so figured I'd throw it in there just in case.

Bolded the great point. Don't be afraid to skip a day to let your skin rest. The same is true for topical retinoids.

I have been using Benzaclin for over 2 years now and have had great success with it but lately it seems to not be working since i got 3 acne cysts in one month. I usually get say 3 cysts a year but I will continue to use it and see how it goes. I hate that the Benzaclin is so expensive. It costs me $64! The only way my face doesnt get super red is using Olay Regenerist UV Defense SPF 15 lotion for the day and Olay Regenerist Deep Hydration Cream at night. I have tried a lot of other moisturizers and this is the only stuff that really helps to keep my face hydrated. It also helps my acne scars fade a little faster too.

The way my face has cleared up is amazing. I only have about 3 inflamed spots right now, which I think is hormonal, almost no comedones at all. I ate breakfast with my mom this morning and she asked me why I was wearing makeup so early- only I wasn't! We're both surprised that my skin is doing so well. The dryness still sucks, and makeup makes it look worse so I only put in on my trouble spots. I moisturize with Cerave PM multiple times a day (derm recommended) and it doesn't burn nearly as much now as it did last week.
