Finally...my long awaited log.(with piccies)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, heres a story of my face...

I started to get spots when i was around 15/16 ,pretty standard, the sort that would be an annoyance but would barely affect the way you live your life.I.e i could still go to festivals and on holiday without worrying i didnt have my face wash. Then just before my 18th birthday things went crazy!!! i started breaking out in cysts on my cheeks, ones that would leave red marks for months on end. I immediately ran to the doctor and smothered any cream i could get my hands on and popped and pill on offer(duac, BP, Zineryt, Oxytetracycline, Trimetethoprim) although some helped temporarily they never fully cleared me and for the next year i was always paranoid about my skin. Also im pretty sure the antibiotics messed up my system pretty bad(candida). However i am not one to blame candida for my skin problem because i had those before i took the antibiotics.

Anyway to cut to the chase i am starting accutane this wednesday hopefully, assuming my blood tests come back ok. I hope you guys join me on the road to getting my skin back to full health and trying to recoup some of the missed teenage years.

Me before my breakout at 17

DAY 5

Ok so the first few days have gone very quickly. The first night of taking accuatane my lips split and bleed... i wanted to blame it on accutane but just don't feel that its possible in the space of a few hours of popping my first pill, probably the super cold weather. Other than that there have been a few new pimples popping up on my upper lip and one on the cheek. My main concern however, is a sudden pain i developed in my hip joint, i went to the cinema the other day with my ex and as soon as i got up my hip absolutely killed, i want to think it wasn't anything to do with the drug but that just seems naive. I also have some slight back ache but its more than bearable. These sides are really worrying me AND i am only on 40mg a day (seems very low for my 81kg weight). I have been tormenting myself looking at peoples negative experience of accutane on the net, some people have permanent chronic joint problems and some(a worrying amount) even develop arthritis... SHOULD I JUST STOP NOW???

I only hear (read) negative things about accutane on this board. I'm a few other boards and they've only had mild side effects. I know a few ppl in real life and they didn't have anything negative to say. My dentist and best friend are actually the ones that finally convinced me to go on accutane. My best friend is on her 2nd course. Her only side effects are dry skin and some joint pain but she said it went away after her last course. My dentist was completely against it until nothing else worked for his sons. His older son developed depression but it went away...and he's happily married with kids now.

I accidentally skipped a dose and the little side effects that I did have went away for that day so to me that's a good indicator that they'll go away once I'm finished.

Most of the side effects are no worse than the ones I had while on antibiotics. There's no way for anyone to tell what side effects they'll have permanently. It's kind of a gamble.

Are you taking anything like vitamin e or fish oil? My knees would crack even before I started accutane and flaxseed oil really helped.

Anyway...don't give up...good luck.

Thanks sugarskull, i think i needed a bit of encouragment. I bought some fish oil supps and am taking 3 a day but was also thinking about glucosamine for my joints if i am to continue. I suppose the reason i am so aware of the side effects is because i am living with the effects from 7 months of antibiotics (CANDIDA) which unless i stick to a strict anti yeast diet gives me hair loss, depression, thrush and worsened acne...why did i ever touch that ****!!!

Yeah I was on antibiotics for a long time and got such horrible side effectss from them. That's why I decided to just go for the permanent medication so hopefully I can be on nothing eventually :)

I'd just keep an eye on the joint/hip pain. Give it a few weeks. Hang in there!

Your story is so similar to mine it's creepy! I'm on day... 72 right now and I started off bad with the side effects. I had really bad back pains, which only become apparent when I was bending down to brush my teeth, or lay flat on my back. On day 72, I am now happy to say that any pain I may have is now gone. Oddly enough, I can still get away with not moisturizing (and I do... probably shouldn't). I think your dermatologist definitely knows what she's doing. Imagine how many people have gone through that office with the exact same problem as us. Good luck and I'll be keeping track!

Day 7

Ok thanks for the replies people, it really help to have somewhere to vent. Despite my doubts I think ill just have to stick it out at this dose then and hope Mr Dunhill knows his stuff and assume someone who's been a derm for 30 years knows more than an acne.org dweller (doubtfull :P). Other than that i have had no real side effects to speak of, literally as soon as i wrote that post about joint pains they stated diminishing. I still am yet to have the dreaded IB yet which is great because I've got a big night out with some old friends tonight and I still look half human...kinda(piccies attatched).

This week has gone super fast, i hope the rest of the course does too. couple of questions...

1. Does everybody necessarily have an initial breakout?

2. Possiblyhopeful, how is your skin after 72 days?

Wow your skin is looking goooood!

From my vast amount of reading ive done, its true that some people are lucky enough not to have an initial outbreak. Maybe youre one of the lucky ones. Also some people notice side effects (drier skin etc early than others) Im on day 5 and have just started experiencing them now.

P.S hope you have fun tonight :).

I was on Accutane 2 and a half times. I say a half because the last time I started it for about 2 weeks and decided to stop.

The first time, the doctor had me start with birth control, which would not pertain to you, and then had me start on the accutane after a month of starting on the pill. I must say I never had any horrible side effects. I did have the dry skin, lips, eyes, etc. I took care of the lips by being EXTREMELY diligent about putting carmex on my lips every 30 minutes or so. My friend, who also tried accutane, wasn't so great with her moisturizing and her lips were black and dry. It got pretty bad for her.

Also, I kept some quality omega 3 oil on hand and slathered my face and hands. If this is too heavy for some, have a light lotion near at all times and make sure to apply to your face every so often, before your skin has a chance to dry out. Also, I made sure to keep eyedrops with me, and I drank plenty of water. I think if you are organized and prepared, you can minimize a lot of the problems.

I never experienced any joint pain, but then I wasn't really looking for it. Sometimes if we are hyper-aware of the symptoms we start to think everything is a result of the accutane.

Also, don't ever make the mistake of trying to pick your skin on Accutane or do anything abrasive. The drug thins your skin out and picking your face will cause major scabs which will take forever to heal.

After I ended my first course, my skin actually stayed clear for over a year, but then I noticed I started to get steady breakouts again.

The second time on Accutane I tried it without birth control and it did not work as well. Obviously my acne was more hormonal. I still continued to get some breakouts. It worked well and the acne became pretty light. I decided to try a third time but once I started I just didn't feel like going through the hassle of creams, salves and moisturizers by my side at all times.

I have to say with good exfoliation using my clarisonic brush, the use of glycolic peels, good skin care products and very minimal use of face make-up, I have gotten my acne under control and my skin is the clearest it's ever been.

Accutane works great for most people but one has to be organized and on top of their moisturizing.

Day 9

Right, well the IB has started, ive got a massive cyst behind my right jaw that i kinda squeezed and made worst. ive also got lots of other spots on my cheeks/chin...not nice. forhead is completely clear though.

im not suffering any joint pains anymore but i am getting a really itchy scalp, this isnt good because im not sure whether this is due to a yeast infection(overuse of antis) or the accutane use. Whichever it is seems to be making my itchy red scalp shed a lot quicker.

The dreaded IB! Although ive got to say...your skin still looks more than half decent. I know it never really matters what anyone else says but it does. I think it helps to have one area of your face that is clear...instead on spots dotted around here there and everywhere.

Good luck getting past this crappy stage.

day 15

Ok so the first two weeks have gone stupidly fast, i still have not had an initial breakout excluding a couple of stray nodules in places i dont normally get them. In fact my skin has kind of cleared up a little bit which is odd considering i've barely got any sleep and eaten terribly the last few days. For christmas eve and new years eve i had 4 bottles of cider and didn't notice any negative effects...Well maybe a little more worst for wear in the morning.

As for side effects i have no joint pain anymore, however i do still have chronically itchy scalp thats starting to flake and very dry lips which sounds pretty standard from what i've read. The scalp thing does bother me because through the whole accutane process the one side effect i've been most worried about is hair loss, i would love to know what percentage of people it occurs in and the chances of it growing back after the treatment???

Thanks JessyL, I know what you mean about it not mattering what other people telling you, when id get sad about my skin being bad in the middle of a breakout my ex's always said they never noticed a difference.

Anyway heres some pictures i just took...

Cheers. GL Sir.

Hi man, i had a dermatologist in london where l live that refused to prescribe it because it wasnt bad enough but then i moved to bristol university and subsequently transferred derms, this one was happy to prescribe it to me seeing as i had tried lots of other stuff. Just make sure you reiterate that your acne might not be awful but it is very persistant. No i was not private(NHS).
