Accutane and hard-ons

Hola Amigos

I have recently completed 5 months of accutane. I am happy with the results, and almost all is good. The other night I had sex with the first girl since before I started accutane, so its been almost 6 months. Anyway, I had trouble getting a hard-on. Lol, I freaked the *#(# out. Anyway, I have no problem getting an erection with physical stimulation, I could masturbate 5 times a day if I desired. But Im not sure why I couldnt get a hard on. Lately I can watch porn and I dont even get an erection unless I touch myself.

Im not sure its accutane though. I have been under lots of stress and have had insomnia, although everthing is getting better it looks like. I was taking melatonin and a few muscle building supplements too.

So in two weeks, after school is done, i will go to a doctor. But Im just keeping my head up and enjoying the short life Ive been given until then. What else can you do?

So if anyone has any positive advice I would appreciate it.

Hopefully I can resume my girl-hounding ways soon!!!

Take care to you all

I'm no expert in this area (I'm 33 year old female) but just thought I would give you my thoughts about your situation.

It could be related to the muscle building stuff you're taking, it could be the accutane, you're doing the right thing going to see the doctor if it is making you anxious but I can tell you with absolute certainty that anxiety, insomnia and stress are prime suspects for causing erection troubles. Perhaps because this was the first time you have tried to have sex since your course of accutane you were subconsciously thinking the accuatne may have had an effect and those thoughts were actually the root of the probelm (hope that makes sense!) Try not to think about it and relax, I know that's easier said than done but it's a cycle you have to break before it becomes a long term problem for you.

As I said, if in any doubt or if it's causing you anxiety go and chat to your doctor about it.

I hope you are back to your old self soon!

Rosie

Thanks Rose!

I actually just got a hard on from watching porn without touching myself(although really slowly), so maybe I really dont have anything to worry about. And I still get random erections. I just dont know why I was only half erect with this girl cuz that has never happened before.

well it sounds to me that the problem is most likely to be psychological (stress etc)

You can still get an erection so I doubt there will be a medical reason for what's going on (or not as the case currently is!)

I honestly believe that the less you think about, the less of a problem it will be.

Maybe it's because you REALLY like this girl and it has made you unusually nervous/wanting to "impress" her? Maybe it was because you hadn't been in action for a while? Who knows...just don't worry about trying to work out why or you will be subconsciuously making it into more of an issue than it is and you will be putting more undue pressure on yourself for next time.

When you next see her (or whoever!) just take things slowly and build up to the moment, taking your time and really enjoying every moment will help you stay relaxed. You can't (and shouldn't!) switch it on and off like a tap...it's a journey not a destination!

Not trying to scare you but keep an eye on the problem. I had this problem after taking Accutane 8 years ago and it hasn't fully resolved itself. A little while ago Dr. Pezzi wrote an ebook on sex in general, and in it he included a section on Accutane induced impotence. Also, Accutane was originally developed to be a chemotherapy drug for brain and pancreatic cancer. Chemotherapy drugs have been linked to impotence. I hope you get better but keep an eye on it.

Your fine, if you still get errections in the morning and from watching porn without self stimulation its your nerves/stress ect. Impotence from accutane is really rare, and even people that get it, dont have proof it was from accutane, many people get impotence without ever taking accutane and are in their 20's-30's too.

More specific, okay. Well, first of all I made a mistake. I took Accutane back in 1999, so i guess that was 11 years ago instead of 8 (sorry for crappy math). This put me at a senior in high school. Before taking the drug I was perfectly happy and healthy. I would spend hours a day playing sports with plenty of energy. My sex drive was great (I could barely keep it down at times). While taking the drug the only side effects I had were bloody noses and dry skin/lips. About a year after taking the drug I noticed my sex drive became drastically reduced. I wasn't getting erections nearly as often, and I found it more difficult to keep it up. About 2 years after completing Accutane my sex drive was completely gone. The only way I could get erections at this point would be with constant touching of it. If I did manage to get it up it would not get close to the size or hardness it used to get to. At this time I also started getting other problems that persist til this day. Those include back/joint pain, constant fatigue, dry skin/hair, constipation/stomach cramps (not IBD though), and the sexual problem of course. The first thing I did was go to my family doctor and told him about this. He said the serotonin in my body was low and prescribed me a drug called Lexapro. This didn't help any of my symptoms at all. After that I went to a naturopathic doctor (holistic medicine). She put me on all types of vitamins/minerals for a period of time. This had little to no effect on my problems. I have also experimented with all types of diet changes, meditation, and other kinds of tricks. Nothing has really worked. To this day I cannot maintain an erection worth a crap. I've posted on this subject on this site as well as other sites. I already know that people are going to post that my side effects happened after I took Accutane so they are not related. People will say that these problems would have happened anyway and it's all in my head. If you want to say that fine, I'm not going to argue with that, but I just wanted to put my story out there in case other people have this problem. All my story is true, nothing was fabricated.

Sorry my friend. That hurts to hear. I havent had any other side effects that you have had so i hope and pray i dont go down that course. My dad took accutane and he didnt have any problems so i dont think ill get it either.

But I dont doubt that it is the cause of your problem. How long and what dose were you on? Do you take viagra or shit?

I guess even if you have a problem you have to live as if you didnt, cuz what can you do about it?

Ya, you'll probably be fine. My reaction to Accutane probably only happens to a small percentage of people if it indeed was the cause. I was on Accutane for 6 months with a dosage of 40mg a day. I haven't tried Viagra yet because I was hoping not to go down that path. I might try it soon, but I'm holding out hope of finding the root cause of all my problems.

I took Accutane in 1999 also and I have sexual problems among many others and there ALL FROM ACCUTANE. and YES 10 years later there still here. I don't care about what fake internet kooks say or nay say. Accutane is a horrible drug and some of us get hit hard with permanent side effects. AbcAbc we need to talk and I will ask you what's going on with your problems now and how you treated them?

I'm also having sexual problems that started about 1-2 months after finishing accutane and are still persisting about 7 months after the end of the course. How long ago did your finish your course?

I already have ZMA, actually so I can give this a try. But I'm also having problems such like lack of interest/libido and enjoyment.

To Arbiter: I haven't really found anything that has helped my symptoms. I still live with most of them and am trying to learn to deal with them as a part of life. I read a lot of stories about other people dealing with these Accutane related problems, and none of them can figure it out either. The more time that passes, the the less optimistic I get about finding a miracle cure for all my symptoms.

To mwd: Have you tried ZMA? Everything I find on the internet about it relates to body building. On the ZMA wikipedia page (I know not always reliable) it states that studies on ZMA showed no effect on the levels of testosterone. This is why I am surprised it would have an effect on sex drive. How does it work, and what are the possible side effects?

for everyone who experienced this, were you on a high dosage?

I was on a lower medium dose. 20 mg for 2 months, 30 mg for the next, then 20 for the last month.

I certainly lost sensation when I started taking accutane, and it hasn't came back. I still have a high sex drive though.. To be honest, I used to be a bit premature before I took it (mind you I was 13 and only had a few sexual experiences that lasted more than 2 minutes) and now I can last longer and it's still a good time... If I get a couple drinks in me I have definite ED, which sucks cause that's generally when I want it most. I understand sensation goes down for everyone when they are under the influence, but I literally can't feel anything.

I think we should just screw as much as we can, whether there is a problem or not. Yea, I take ZMA and it helps, and it definitely gives you a deep sleep. Take it and tell me how it goes. But forget about it all for a little bit and then let me know.

How could accutane cause a loss of sensation? Damn though, if you were having sex at 13 you must be a huge player.

I am already gettting a little acne again, so I think that if I have a problem it would be temporary, as my acne hasnt completely gone away now. And the more the think about it, the worse it gets, without question.

And i may be speaking for myself only, but accutane can help you get girls.

Killionaire- why does alcohol give you ED, and in what form?

Not sure, I'd say mostly it's the numbing effect on the nerves alcohol induces... Like i said I already have minimal sensation there, when you mix alcohol in it it's practically hopeless... I can get an erection, just doesnt stick around for long usually

Accutane or no accutane, thats what alcohol does to 90%+ of men.

K so im going to be honest i just had two outstanding orgasms. Yes, it was only hand stimulation, but does this indicate that I do not have a problem?

If I were to have a problem from accutane, what would it be like and how would it be caused?

When I stop masturbating I can keep it up for at least 30 seconds usually without touching myself. I am just nervous that when I get with a girl I wont be able to get hard, which is what happened the last time out of nowhere.

I am going to the doctor anyway next monday so I am going to mention it to him in passing.

Peace!
