Er:YAG laser or Accutane?

Hi!

I am thinking about taking another cure of accutane to treat my acne. However, recently a laser clinic opened in my hometown of Sweden. I've been reading some about the laser options that are available. I got some mild scarring from my acne along with active acne.

I have an appointment with my dermatologist in early September. She will offer me another shot at accutane (the first time I took it was a year ago, it really helped, cleared my face, however, everything did not go away). I am uncertain wether to try Er:YAG laser or go with accutane?

In that study it seems like the laser not only improve scarring, but also remove acne.

Er:YAG laser treatment - medical study

Could you help me, anyone here at acne.org who's had a laser treatment, and more specific a Er:YAG laser treatment for acne and scars?

Sorry for the messy post, I'm Swedish :P and tired from work.

a respons would mean so much, since I am depressed. I hate my myself for looking like this and it makes me more sad since I have a girlfriend that loves me, but I do not wanna look like this.

I am considering calling the clinic next monday and talk to them. They also offer Nd:YAG laser for active acne. Perhaps I should have one or two treatments of that before using the stronger laser?

Anyhow I must consult with their doctors / nurses.

Comment and help me please!

That is a hard decision, but if I were you, I would go with the laser treatment. I do not know how well a YAG laser treatment works to remove acne, but you said the clinic offers YAG laser for active acne so you should check with the clinic to see how well it works or see if they have any before and after pictures. Furthermore, you've been on accutane once and it didn't completely clear you up, so what are the chances it will completely clear you up this time. Besides, for accutane to work it'll take 6 months if I am not wrong? And the laser treatment will probably take less time than that and it'll improve your scars to according to that study you read. So check with the clinic and see how well yag laser treatment works and if your convinced it'll clear you up then go for it!

DEFINITELY not laser. Laser is an experimental treatment and definitely doesn't have the same proven results that Accutane has. Not to mention that it wil probably be dozens of time more expensive.

the laser treatment may seem like an "easy" way out but I am tired of my acne, and I'm tired of waiting. If I go on accutane, which I believe will clear my acne up since its moderate, I will still get the initial breakout, and it will take 6 months, with hard side effects, dry skin, eyes etc. Accutane is great but it is a rough path.

I do not know what to do. It would really help if people here in the community could step forward and tell about these two treatments and perhaps even tell about own experiences. The laser for acne treatment specifically only cost around 700kr, which in $ would translate into $100. Which isn't that bad. That being said, it better have some great effect. Perhaps if I visit the clinic they can show me previous patient that recieved the treatment and based upon the doctors verdict and my own feelings, come up with a result.

Laser would be awesome, if it works...accutane will not be available until 15th of September, when I have the appointment with my dermatologist.

People reading this post, if you have had a laser treatment, and even better, the ones I am considering, tell me!

I just saw an ad on tv (for the USA) stating there is a class-action law suit against the makers of accutane because of the harmful/damaging affects it has on a person. Maybe google something along this line before you try accutane again!

I would definitely go with accutane if u still have active acne. I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I had some acne and acne scars from previous acne. I decided to do pixel laser to remove my acne scars. Big mistake! My whole face looked like a war zone after. I had so many new pimples after the laser that my derm had to put me on accutane in the end. So if you are looking into doing laser to remove your scars you should not have any active acne.

i had breakouts since i was 18 n i'm now 26. i've been through treatment with a skin specialist, proactiv, facial treatment, over the counter products and nothing works. imagine all the deep n pitted scars left over on my face. i had several occasions of breakouts n the last i had was in june this year. out of desperation, i did some research online n finally made my move to see a derm in end of july. i did a skin analysis at her clinic n i was told that i have grade 3 acne (highest is grade 4). she put me on antibiotics for 4 weeks, with retin A n duac, that's all. on week 2, i started the red/blue light theraphy n i was supposed to complete 8 sessions in order to see optimum result. guess what, i just completed 5th sessions n my face is almost clear! not even a single acne is noticeable, save for those really small pimples n scars. i'm down from grade 3 to grade 1 i suppose lol. due to fast improvement, i only need to undergo 6 sessions of the light theraphy hooray! my last session would be on the 18th sept. i'm glad that i do not have to take accutane for my acne, my derm doesnt recommened accutane anyway, unless n until everything on earth doesnt cure or put ur acne under control.

as to laser, i will start my 1st mosaic laser this nov. i was told by my derm that mosaic laser targets existing acne very well as it destroys oil glands. as to other laser like CO2, it is only meant for those who have old acne scars, n their skin condition should b stable, meaning free from existing acne.

i hope u'll find a way out, wish u luck. to clear ur doubts, i would suggest u to seek for a proper n professional advice, it is always good to talk to ur derm, as they r well trained on that. cheers~~
