Whiteheads that eventually become pimples

My face has whiteheads that lurk on my face for maybe 1-2 months. However, after that they don't go away, but instead become inflamed and turn into full blown pimples that are small, hard and red, and take FOREVER to go away. Before, my whiteheads used to vanish, but now it seems that every one of them becomes inflamed.

Does anyone have experience with this, and is there any way to stop it from happening?

I know what you mean. I know this is bad and you may not want to do it but the only way I can stop them from becoming pimples is to squeeze the gunk out of the whitehead. But I make sure to only do it when they are good and ready, otherwise they get worse.
