Mask turns uninfected pimples into cysts?

Recommended Posts

I think I already know the answer, but.... normal or no? :(

It's the Mario Badescu drying mask - supposed to help with acne by drying up all the oils.

It doesn't have any ingredients that would cause that. The cysts develop through some other mechanism.

The sulfur is the actual treatment in that mask; it is antibacterial.

Huh. Well, I basically NEVER touch my face aside from washing it 2x a day and applying moisturizer. And even then I make sure to wash my hands well. The only other things it could be are my cleanser and moisturizer (which NEVER caused me any problems before) or my toner that I started using about a month ago. These are the ingredients, do you think it might be the toner?:

Water, Alcohol Denat., Glycerin, Isopropyl Alcohol, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Aminoethanesulfinic Acid, Paeonia Albiflora Root Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Phellodendoron Amurense Bark Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Rosa Roxburghii Fruit Extract, Sodium Citrate, Ppg-13-Decyltetradeceth-24, Citric Acid, Butylene Glycol, Camphor, Trisodium Hedta, Benzoic Acid, Fragrance, Yellow 203, Blue 1

There's nothing specifically comedogenic in the toner that I see, but honestly, toners aren't necessary. :) It also has a goodly amount of alchohol and that can be very irritating for acne prone skin, and possibly lead to worsened breakouts just via irritation.

The mask is likely a GOOD thing, as it has the sulfur in it. If you're prone to inflamed acne, and as you say you do have cysts now, I'd suggest something more regularly that's also antibacterial. BP's a good choice. My acne wasn't inflamed, so I just use an AHA product.

I do admit I like to use a toner every once in a while just because this one I like has AHA and BHA in it, and it smells sooooo good. I occasionally use the Neutrogena Pore Refining toner. Not at all regularly though.

The following two links are to websites that list comedogenic ingredients. You can research the ingredients in your product(s) and determine if any might be problematic. The second link is to a PDF so if your computer is old or cranky, your computer might freeze. Remember that the further down on the list of ingredients, the less percentage of that ingredient is in the product. So a comedogenic ingredient that is in the last half of an ingredient list may or may not cause you problems. http://www.zerozits.com/Articles/acnedetect.htm#inglist
