Spot The Difference Roaccutane and diet Journey (UK based)

Recommended Posts

Hello, newbie here.

OK well first off I have been on Roaccatane for 2 weeks now.

Starting to get dried lips and some breakout of spots. But I am determined to stick with it because of the success stories I have read here which is why I have signed up here.

Questions

I am on 20mg boxes. I take 3 a day. Odd question this but am I on 60mg tablets?

I am current trying to lose some weight as well and have been eating fruits every morning before and after a 30min run. I have stuck to this for 3 weeks now and evenings I have a normal meal. Not sure if I have lost weight as I have no scales in my house and I am too scared to weigh myself. However I do feel fitter? But also heavier at the same time? Does Roaccutane make you put weight on?

I am so need advice with skin regimes. I have read on here that good products to buy are ones containing benzoyl peroxide. I am in the UK and have no idea what products contain this? Any suggestions?

Also can someone give me advice on a good regime to have whist on Roaccutane? Currently I am moisturising every other day when my skin feels dry and I am use lipbalm on my dry lips.

=====================

My meals, food intake

My daily routine please help me improve. (5 days a week) (I try to keep to a 5 a day diet)

Breakfast - Sometimes nothing (I know bad) But generally if I have time, apple, oranges, orange juice, fruit juice

- Jog/walk/run for 30mins - hour depending on the time I have.

Eat a "2 a day box of fruits - melon, pineapple, apples, grapes, kewi fruits, mango" Or a salad or a footlong subway sandwich (Chicken or Tuna)

Evenings meal generally a normal meal of chicken, Rice (small portion) Veg.

Snack on apples, oranges.

Drink alot of green tea, water and fruit juices. (Tropicana).

2 days of "treating myself"

Because I do jogging and eat a heather diet then before I do feel I deserve a treat otherwise I would go insane.

So my "treating myself" days normally consist of more "fatty" meals, although I do have some fruit and veg. I do no exercise during these days as 1) I am too tired 2) I do need a "recovery" period 3) I think accuatane is making my body more tired and aching then usually.

Bad Habits

Smoke 2-3 times a week - Generally smoke 2 cigarettes. I don't normally smoke and wouldn't even call myself a smoker but when I do socialise with friends who do smoke I cannot help myself by have one or two. I do sometimes go a week - 2 weeks without smoking.

Sometimes I snack on biscuits or have a kitkat - But these are rare and are only consumed during my "treat myself" days.

Thanks for reading.

Hello,

I live in the UK and am currently on Roaccutane. Don't use benzoyl peroxide when taking accutane, it'll completely dry your skin out and make it really irritated. What you need on accutane is a good moisturiser to deal with the dry skin. I recommend Cetaphil. You can find it in Lloyds Pharmacy (bigger branches have just started stocking it) or order it online at www.pharmacy2u.co.uk

For the dry skin, E45 shower gel is good and E45 cream is good for dry skin. I use Carmex on my dry lips which you can find at Boots.

As for losing weight, make sure you don't cut out fat completely as Accutane is better absorbed with fat. I feel terrible when I eat too much junk so make sure I eat good fats. I am eating quite a lot of oily fish and whenever I cook I use olive oil. I have found that I have lost weight while taking accutane, but this could be because it is summer and I am eating lighter, summer meals like salads.

You are takin 3 x 20mg a day so your daily dosage is 60mg.

Good luck with your course :)

Thank you for your input. I am currently using this nivea-for-men-24h-moisturizer_1247578594_LRG.jpg as my moisturizer.

I am eating more fruit and veg but have a normal meal in the evenings. I run 4-5 times.

What good facewash is there? I am currently using Botanics 42606910.jpg as a face wash.

Do I need a cleanser? an exfoliator?

How come my pictures don't show up?

Haven't posted my side effects which isn't much but I am getting dried lips. Skin is fine for now, not much drying. My muscles ache not sure if that is pills or if its because I am doing more running then then normal? Probably both.

=========

My "Treat myself day" - Day 12 of my Accutane treatment.

Today is kind of my "treat day" as I have been running/jogging for 5 days now and stuck to a fruit diet.

Woke up with a hangover feeling, felt sick, tired and had a minor headache. (I suspect it's the accutane kicking in after a week of use.

These two days I have broke out because I had a lot of cereal last week in an effort to loose weight, eat healthier. I know now milk, diary products are bad for my acne so will completely remove them. I don't have any dairy products anyway just those milk with cereal that did it.

My meals

Had Pork belly, chicken, 3 small potatoes, carrots, long beans for my lunch.

Packet of chips (crisps), made from sunflower oil so good fats but ok they are "chips" - I feel bad now :wall:

Snacked on an apple, a couple of clementines, apricots.

I've drank only green tea today.

Will end the evening with Broccoli and Chicken. Obviously eat more broccoli then chicken, with very little rice. This will be a small portion as I am quite full from the snacks of fruits.

Two Weeks Later

Well been two weeks into accutane. Must say so far has been good. My skin seems better or less lumpy but at times it does flair up at nights and then down again in the mornings.

Side effects so far:-

Dry lips which is normal

Had headache on Sunday - normal

Red lips? - is this normal?

Surprising my face isn't that dry in comparison to my lips.

So what can I expect approaching my first month?

Week 3 if accutane and finished my first box.

Acne seems to have died down, doesn't seem as lumpy. I broke out 1 spot on my chin which has flared up. One spot isn't too bad, used to get 89742394732947238 of them.

No major side effects so far besides dried lips. My skin isn't too dry but I do moisturise twice a day. I had 2 nose bleeds since I've started. Nothing major like bleeding like a tap but just blood every now and them.

I think my diet has helped a little. I am doing more exercise, eating more fruits and veg and cutting down on ready meals.

My daily routine is wash face with a cleanser face wash and then moisturise twice a day. Should I be doing something else?

3 weeks 4 days of the program. Going to quit smoking

I brokeout a few days ago, not sure what caused it? Maybe the yogourt pot I had? But it was only one? Can't be that bad can it?

I am starting to dry eyes I think? I can still produce tears when yawning but my do feel a bit dried.

I have now started to stop smoking. Was not much of a smoker about 10 a week max I would smoke. I consider myself to be a social smoker when out with friends. However I have read smoking can be linked to acne. So from now I am going to stop. No more!

I also forgot to take accutane yesterday. That shouldn't affect much should it?

One Month

So yeah it has been exactly a month now since I've been taking accutane.

Nothing has changed what so ever. At first I saw some improvements now it has gotten worst. I am starting to break out.

So is the drugs working?

this sounds about right from what I have read. on the leaflet it says 'skin may get worse for the first 7-10 days' and I dont believe it for a minute! most people continue breaking out til the third month so dont worry too much!

OK So its approaching 2 months now since I've started so half way through. I have enough for a further 2 more months I think?

2 months in then. I have seen no to little improvement. Getting worried as I expect something to be happening.

I see alot of post where people are on 3month trails, 6 month trails. I seem to be in between?

I asked my doctor what happens if nothing happens after the 4months? He told me to go back on antibiotics. Which isn't something I want to do nor I think will help. I thought he might extend the trail to 6months?

i'm almost two months in, and i have just broken out all the way along. i'm also meant to be on accutane for four months, but now i might have an extra two months if it hasn't completely cleared.

maybe extended your course would be beneficial? i'm not sure antibiotics will help much.. well they didn't for me.

accutane for the win!

good luck

Update.

My final 4th month course is over. And still not cured. Still have acne :wall::wall:

My doctor has reviewed it and he has given me 2 more months on a higher dosage from 60g to 80g now. Twice a day.

He said if this doesn't work then there is nothing he can do. :o

if you want to loose weight, simply live a lifestyle like your grand-grand-grandparents did, as hard as you can. They did not have acne and were not overweight.

I am talking about physical activity, sleep, skylight, but most importantly diet. If you look on animal planet, you have probably never seen a fat animal, in case you have - it have lived in some sort of captivity. The point is, the lions on the savannah and the cows on the fields of grass eat as much as they want all day long, some days they doesnt even move a lot, and just eat eat eat, but they never get fat. It's impossible. How? It's because they eat their natural diet which they have been evolved to adapt through thousands and actually millions of years of evolution. So if you start eating what you are adapt to eat you will loose weight, especially if you also focus extra much on low carb. There is plenty of literature about this so it's up to you to enter the door - I have however opened it for you.

Most people will also loose their acne by following a such lifestyle. It can be hard to live like this yes - therefore you have to find your own balance. If you look at indenginous people living today, f.example the ones on Trobriand Island. They have zero acne, once they move to western lifestyle they get acne.

Good luck

Diet and exercise are great and all, and certainly could help. But it's not true to say that our grand grand grand grandparents didn't have acne. Please take a look at this article:

Acne is a struggle, and diet and exercise are helpful, but it is unfair to assume that if someone suffers acne it is because they lead a slovenly life.
