what happens with cortisone shot

Recommended Posts

What happens to all the pus/infection in a pimple when it's injected with cortisone?

Sorry..really gross

My derm said it would reduce the swelling and "break up" the stuff that is inside

of the cyst but wouldnt do anything for infection.

Is it normal to have itching at the shot site after or is it possible to be

allergic to Kenalog/Cortisone?

Itching can occur for a multitude of reasons. You can't be allergic to cortisone as your body produces it anyway. There are all sorts of anecdotal reports all over the internet about 'allergic reactions to cortisone injections' but that's impossible. You may be reacting to the solvent used to dilute the cortisone. Or to something applied to your skin for disinfecting prior to injection of the cortisone.

Because cortisone is a naturally occurring substance, true allergic responses to the injected substance do not occur. However, it is possible to be allergic to other aspects of the injection, most commonly the betadine many physicians use to sterilize the skin.

The pus and other gunk in the cyst simply gets reabsorbed.

OK Im pretty freaked out. got the Kenalog 10 injection into a white spot-not red or inflamed at the

time but now I've developed a red patch right next to it.

Is this normal? will it subside soon...
