I've finally found a cure for my acne...

Recommended Posts

After struggling with acne most of my adult life I've accidentally stumbled on the cure. I'm pregnant - and it's the best my skin has looked for decades. In the time that I would normally had at least 8 cysts (I'm 4 1/2 months) - I've had one tiny one. I guess this means my acne is completely hormone related and all the stuff I've tried over the past 20 or so years (topical products, diet changes, antibiotics) has been a waste of time. Looking back, the time I was on birth control was probably the only time my skin has been OK. I'm not sure how my skin's going to be after giving birth, but if it does get bad again, I'm going to straight to hormonal treatments. Just wondering if anyone else out there has experienced this?

That's funny...the exact same thing happened to me...I'm 32 and have had acne since 14. Being pregnant was the only time I have ever had clear skin (and I mean not one!). But the weird thing is birth-control pills only have a minor effect on my acne. And I had a blood test and all my hormone levels apparently came back normal. So if it's hormonal...then wtf ??? I will be watching this post to see if anyone can figure this out. It looks like we both have the same problem lol.

I guess this means my acne is completely hormone related

One of the innumerable hormones that pregnancy affects is melatonin.

Since melatonin is anti-androgenic, slows cell division,

is directly and indirectly anti-oxidant, and reduces cortisol levels

and restores insulin function, I bet you're right --

your acne is completely hormone-related. Just not the hormone

you're assuming.

On the plus side, melatonin is much more controlled by behavior

and environment than any sex hormone you might imagine affects

acne. On the minus side, the modern world does not make it easy

to adjust your behavior and environment to have a normal melatonin

cycle. Kinda like knowing tobacco cause cancer, but not being

able to give up those wonderful cigarettes.

But the weird thing is birth-control pills only have a minor effect on my acne.

The pill produces nothing like the chaotic systemic changes of pregnancy, so this should not be too weird.

IMHO.

Everything I have read says that melatonin causes acne

Database - I'm curious - what kind of ways can you control melatonin??

I had the same experience two out of three of my pregnancies! A plug for breastfeeding here as well as my skin was clear as long as I was breastfeeding at least 3-4 times a day. Now that I'm slowly weaning my skin has gone back to being bad... :(

I can't take hormones either so I'm not quite sure what my next step will be...Adult acne is not my friend!!!

My mom had acne when she was young, but she said that it all went away after she gave birth to my brother and me, at 23 and 26yrs of age.
