I blame the media for making everyone so vain and crazy over their appearance. Make up and all the picture editing and blah blah is really screwing up what beauty is.

If everyone was just natural and showed their bodies for what they truly are then I honestly believe the world would be a more kind and fair place. I'm sick of people putting on tons of make up and getting their faces caked with lies and false beauty. All this lying is ruining self esteems. People are fucking lost in a fantasy world where beauty is skin deep and what you look like and what you wear makes you who you are.

I don't believe that at all. Sure make up and shiny clothing are nice to use to make yourself look more unique or make you feel more attractive but really if you need those things to make you feel attractive then is that really healthy? If you can't feel attractive just being you as yourself bare-skin comfortably dressed with your natural charm then how sad.

If only the world where a perfect place.....but sadly it is not. And unless aliens come down from some far away planet with the acne cure. Many of us will continue to break out and people just don't understand how much all this fake beauty shit makes us feel. Put down the concealer and just be yourself. No you don't need blush or long straight eyelashes or plump lipstick covered lips to be beautiful. All you need is kindness and charisma. They don't sale emotions in those cosmetics. All they sale is lies. You can cover up your imperfections! Yes! But does that make them go away forever? No. It's a temporary fix. Putting a bandage over the parts of you you can't accept.

Make up has become a medicine. An antidepressant. A mood stabilizer, a drug. I find it all so terrible.

Agree about the media. I rant about it all the time and annoy everyone.

Haha! Same here! But eventually I get the "Shut up." line and I return to myself.

But eh it's all a conspiracy by the makeup companies to make us feel bad about how we look so we can continue to buy their drugs. As long as they make us feel ugly and tell us that their product can take that pain away we will continue to buy their products.

It's an addiction to fake beauty.

Hey I have to admit, they got me. Makeup is my thing. And I know how bad that is... my dad tells me. But that's life. Even more than makeup I despise the portrayal of women and their bodies. Totally insulting and unrealistic.

Yep! We all need smooth orange skin, bleached teeth and angel soft/smooth hair.

Yes I agree that the portrayal of the human body is insulting and unrealistic. But you know they get to define what beauty is so they get to pick the women and men who best fit their idea, coat them with makeup and make them look perfect and then they tell us that you have to be like this person. They may not say it outright but the subliminal messages are there. Everyone wants to be accepted and when a particular type of person gets accepted the most.....It's evil. But it has become so much a part of our society.

Their new slogan should just be "You have to be like this!". It takes the mind games out of the equation.

Look, I agree with you. I hate the way the media presents itself. But your arguments actually don't make sense.

Remember that Body Dysmorphic Disorder occurs in all parts of the world, including isolated areas where access to media is limited or practically non-existent. It's probable that media acts as a trigger or worsens symptoms regarding the dissatisfaction of appearance, but it is unlikely to be the cause.

Also, remember everyone participating on this forum has skin problems; in other words, we are below the average standard of appearance. You might as well present the same argument you're presenting now, but compare yourself to the average person instead of models. Your point would still stand.

Nobody said anything about BDD though, I understand your point but we are talking about general dissatisfaction with the way the media portrays people. And BDD is more prevalent in westernized countries. I don't consider myself below the average standard of appearance just because I have acne either ;)

if the media was full of make-up-less naturals, then the media would be full of hot make-up-less naturals, which certainly do exist.

then everyone would put on makeup to look as good as the naturals, lol

It's very unfortunate. I think I am the way I am now largely because of the media. I never used to be like this until I started watching TV way more than I should have.

I try not to watch TV unless it's something I'm really interested in and truly enjoy. I'm probably never going to stop watching TV completely, so I just limit myself to a few shows that I really like (the same goes with magazines and the internet). If I'm really into what I'm watching I usually don't focus on how the actors all have beautiful skin, but rather I focus on the plot and what's happening in the story. But when I'm just sitting around watching pointless TV that I'm really not that involved in I find myself obsessing over how perfect everyone is.

The only thing the media contributes is a standard which people can choose to try to hold themselves to or not. It's perfectly natural for people to want to feel attractive, so of course we try to attain traits that we consider beautiful. Appreciating aesthetic beauty isn't shallow, as it doesn't necessarily dismiss things that don't fit our idea of what beauty is.

As for makeup, I think that people's reasons for wearing it the way they do are often misunderstood, and aside from that it usually comes down to personal taste. I see so many girls whose makeup I think is just too much for whatever the occasion is (or just done unskillfully), but I don't see it as being 'fake' so much as I see them as wanting to project a certain image. It's a valid form of expression. Makeup can be used tastefully and subtly to bring out certain features or to make an artistic statement.

By covering up all of my acne with makeup, yes, I'm a fake. I'm showing the world a lie. And because I can't bear to leave the house or let anyone besides family members see my face before I spend half an hour applying various methods of camouflage to my skin, makeup is a crutch for me.

Maybe I've just been brainwashed by the evil makeup companies, but I hate how my acne mars and distracts from my face. And if everyone else doesn't feel the same way about at least that one thing, then I'm really curious as to why you're all attempting to clear your acne. Everyone wants clear skin because it's healthy and beautiful and touchable (though I acknowledge the argument that this is only because we're told that those things are true about clear skin and not skin affected by acne).

If there's something out there that will let me appear with clear skin until my treatment makes it clear, then I'll use it. I want people to look at me and see my eyes, not the red marks on my face, which I find disgusting and expect other people to as well. I don't use the clearness of my skin to gauge my own worth, but I have more confidence when I am wearing makeup. I feel less inhibited and more like myself because I see my face, clear of acne, and I know that it is meant to look that way. I think of the concealer almost as an eraser, rather than a cover-up for that reason.

The comments being made would imply that the media portrays only porn stars as being beautiful, based on the traits being mentioned... no, that's just the porn industry. And Jersey Shore.
