On my way to recovery...

I am now on day 121 of my Accutane course and I think I have made alot of progress. (Pictures will be posted later). The first month I started with 40mg, then the second month my specialist lowered me to 20mg due to my high blood cholesterol. The 3rd month it was lowered again to 10mg for the same reason, and now on the forth month I am still taking 10mg.

The two pictures where I am wearing a sweater, were taken in my post Accutane days.

The 4 pictures taken with me in grey, were taken after about a month of Accutane.

The two pictures taken with me in orange were taken within the last week.

Now I am left with very little acne, but ALOT of red marks that are left behind from the acne. I was wondering if anyone had tips on how to help the healing process of my skin returning to my original tone. I am currently using NeoStrata Spot Lightener. Also from my diet, I have kept eating dairy products to a minimal, I cut out all seafood, and try my best not to eat fast food or fried food.

My specialist said I will most likely be on Accutane until July 2010. (Which makes my course going to roughly be 6 months)

If anyone has any tips or advice or even comments, please feel free to post them.

Thanks in advanced.

Hey man, nice improvement! Congrats. I had very similar acne and similar results, but i was taking 2 pills a day for 8 months. I'm left with red marks and scars too, and I'm looking to fix them soon with mild laser treatment. I don't think you can treat your red marks while you're still on accutane, but I may be wrong, there may be something you can do. I've been thinking about trying M.D. forte facial cream or lotion (can't remember which) to diminish red marks, but I don't know how well it works. I'll do some research and get back to you on that.

Getting rid of red marks is probably harder than getting rid of the actual acne. I've been off accutane for about close to two years now and am still dealing with redness and redmarks. The best option would look into laser treatment or anything professional that treats hyper pigmentation. Any thing you buy off the store or online is a long shot to see results you want , And even sometimes lasers won't get you the results you want. But you def have a lot better chance than creams or anything similar.

Remember though...You have to wait 6 months after being off accutane before getting any treatment done on your face.

Hi Dwarf, great progress! I am also dealing with a lot of redmarks and scars. I don't have the money to do any type of laser treatment, but I've been using these products and they have been helping. I ordered them all online.

Philosophy's microdelivery peel- an at home microdermabrasion. Use 2/3x a week.

Mario Badescu's whitening mask- this is a really gentle mask that is supposed to lighten hyperpigmentation. Use 2/3x a week.

Skin Laboratory's HQ Peel- This is a chemical peel and it's pretty strong, I only use it once every 2 weeks and I don't think you can use it if you are on accutane.

I think as long as you have no active acne and use products that are gentle, you should be fine with treating your redmarks. Good luck man. Red marks suck!

@Jane_Eyre: Thank you for your post, very much appreciate it. Yes, I am still on Accutane and approximately have about 2-3 more months in my course. I am from Canada, but I'm not sure where you are exactly from, but could you tell me how much laser costs in your area? I also heard that laser treatments shouldn't be used within the first 6 months after the course. Could you confirm this? I am also scared to try new products unless I can get a vast number of people to vouch the product.

Thanks.

Seriously incredible improvement. I know people whine and complain about Accutane a lot but I'm sure, like me, this stuff is a miracle drug for you!

I've been fighting some red marks for a while and they seem to be getting better over time. One of the most important things is I wear sunscreen so they don't darken. I'm also using a product called Derma e Scar Gel that you can find at health food stores. It's pretty simple and only has a few ingredients that are anti-bacterial and sooth the skin. I put it on at night though so my face doesn't look greasy.

My derm also had me on a cream called Finacea a while back. It helped to reduce the redness but for the first few weeks it would tingle and burn a bit. Soooo, depending on how sensitive your skin is on Accutane right now, I'm not sure.

Good luck! :)

@mercyunbound

Thanks for your response, I will look into the products that you are using, but yes I get really red from getting exposed to the sun too much. One thing that I'm not really liking right now is how every person is using different products. There is no common product in use and that is what is kinda throwing me off.

Keep the suggestions coming!

@ Paul Xbass

Thanks, I plan on it. I still have approximately 1-2 months left of my course depending on what my dermatologist suggests.

Hey there,

Wow - you have had great improvement! Luckily, I never had to go on Accutance, but I'm glad it is working for you! Looks like you'll be acne free soon. :)

Yeah - red marks - I hate them. Make sure you wear a sunscreen when going outdoors. This helps keep them from getting even darker. I use 100% Organic Emu Oil on my scars, and it really seems to speed up the process of recovery. I also use Dan's AHA+, which evens my skin's overall tone. I find that the earlier I start treating my red spots, the faster and better they heal. I've heard that the earliest stages of a scar, and how it is treated, greatly determines how it will look, how it will affect the skin, and how it will fade. As soon as a pimple is no longer present - just the red spot - I start treating it with Emu Oil every night. My scars diminish very quickly when I do this. I've had quite a few pimples that should have left deep pits on my cheeks, but because I treat them this way, they fill up, become the same color of my skin, and nobody, including me, can ever tell something was there. Might be something to try. I don't know if you can start this now, or if you have to wait until after your Accutance treatment is over. You'd have to talk to your dermatologist about that. :)

It is true everyone seems to have their own cure for scars. I think that has to do with our skin; everyone has different skin types, which respond to different treatments, well, differently! Something that works for my sister, does not work for me... I think you'll have to do a little experimentation on what will work best for you. If you try something, and it works great, awesome! If you try something, and don't see good results, try something different.

I hope this helps!

@acgerstenberger

Yes this does help very much, but I have never heard of those products before. I really hope that all my red marks will go away with time, because currently, I am not applying anything to speed up the healing process. However I have recently bought a new sunscreen that is specialized for me with less acidic chemicals in it. (Forgot the name will post it later)

I have some sort of Aloe lotion that I use to use a year ago before my acne got this bad. I'm not exactly sure if that was part of the cause why this breakout started. I also forget the name of it and will post it later. Should I start to try to apply the aloe lotion again? I heard that aloe is good for the skin.

Please leave more comments or advice if you have any!

Your skin looks great...looks like the accutane is doing its job really well. Im kinda in the same boat. Im on my second month and have a bunch of red marks. After my course is up (maybe a month or so after) my derm said it would be okay to get IPL done. I've had it done before for my red marks and it was amazing. It's kind of like a laser but it's actually an intense light. It's non-ablative and it works AMAZINGLY on red marks. I'd say maybe 4-5 treatments and your red marks would be completely gone. Depending where you go it can get expensive. I paid $100 each time for my entire face which is a pretty good price (im in michigan btw). Anyway good luck! If ipl doesn't sound like your cup of tea a topical retinoid could really do wonders...but you'd definitely have to wait a while after the tane to start that.

@ thejp22

Thanks for your response and information about IPL. I will definately look into that. I have a few questions if you don't mind answering them:

How long did it take for the red marks to go away after the IPL treatment? and how often were your treatments? Also, did the red marks fully go away for you to regain your original skin texture and tone?

Please get back to me

@ Beebo

Thanks for your comment. I will definately keep updating with progress

Small update:

My dermatologist told me to stay off accutane for 3 weeks due to my high cholesterol. It has been about two and a half weeks and already i have two pimples coming back out :(

Please continue posting comments :)

I haven't been on this site for quite a while, but I am finally off Accutane. I have been for approximately a month now and these last two pictures are up to date. Just coming back here and looking at this exact thread I realized that I have come a long way. I'm grateful and thankful for all the comments, support and advice everyone has given me. I have taken exactly 218 pills of Accutane that vary from 40mg to 10mg. Thus far, I haven't had any severe breakouts from withdrawl of Accutane, but I have had one large pimple on my forehead. Other than that, my skin is clear of acne. All that is left are the scars that are left behind. My doctor said I can either get laser treatment for them or get a shot which is directly applied to the scar.

My question to all those who are reading my post:

Any suggestions on which treatment to choose?

Any tips on helping clear the scars and leftover red marks?

Please leave all comments and advice.
