A little survey about fish oil

Recommended Posts

I know there is a huge topic already about fish oil, but it's kind of lacking structure.

There are people saying its the best thing ever, and there are people who say it doesn't help and even claim its bad for you. I want to structure the way you think of it.

I want to know a couple of things from you, I hope you can answere these questions one by one. You can give a little explanation with it. These questions will be good to think about for yourself, and give an overall view of what people think.

1. Do you use fish oil pills?

('yes' continue with 2. 'No' continue with 6.)

2. How much fish oil and omega 3 are you consuming every day?

(note, they are two separate things)

3. Do you care what brand they are? If 'yes' what brand and why?

4. How long have you been taking fish oil pills?

5. Are you seeing effect on your skin?

6. On what information did you base your dicision to (not) use fish oil pills?

7. If you have any official links about fish oil and research that you find reliable and based your opinion on you can post them here.

(and tell in short what the article says)

Thanks in advance!

1. Do you use fish oil pills?

Yes - Carlson Liquid Fish Oil

2. How much fish oil and omega 3 are you consuming every day?

Roughly 3-4g of EPA + DHA per day

3. Do you care what brand they are? If 'yes' what brand and why?

Somewhat - I use Carlson because of reported good quality and it's cheap

4. How long have you been taking fish oil pills?

Been taking liquid/pills for the past 5-6 years

5. Are you seeing effect on your skin?

Yes ?? I am sure it has helped some. Even if it hasn't helped my skin I believe (from almost every study I've seen) that it is highly beneficial for my body.

I have seen very few studies that say omega 3's should not be consumed on a daily basis. Almost everything points to omega 3's being positive.

1. Do you use fish oil pills?

Yes, I use Natures Own Fish Oil Capsules

2. How much fish oil and omega 3 are you consuming every day?

5 tablets a day. I'm not sure how much it was, but quite a high amount.

3. Do you care what brand they are? If 'yes' what brand and why?

Depends, some are of a higher strength and do not contain mercury. These seem like a go.

4. How long have you been taking fish oil pills?

About 6 months after a natropath friend of mine recommended them for my dry skin on my hands. My face is pretty oilly. Ive since stopped.

5. Are you seeing effect on your skin?

It has stopped my hands peeling, though it hasnt done much for my face at all. I broke out just as much as before whilst on them. I'm really not sure if it helps ! I stopped with a fear it would lead to scarring.

I'm pretty active in the scar forums here, as I have both acne and scars. A lot of people are seeing scarring occur when they are taking fish oil after a dose of accutane. We are not sure of the reason, but a lot of this seems to be reduced through the use of an antihistamine (mind my spelling) :) anyhoo i hope this helps !

1.no

6. They actually broke me out! I tried two different brands and they both made my skin really oily and my acne worse. I know they were bad for me (or at least my skin) because I took them for about a month before I finally decided to give up on them. I don't know why but I also have the same result from vitamin E. But I think I get a decent mount of my omegas. I eat fish at least 3 times a week.
