Spontaneous Scarring Condition - AMVC - Atrophia Maculosa Varioliformis Cutis - Pitted Scars Suddenly Appearing - Not Acne

Recommended Posts

Do you moistorize? I do twice a day. Maybe if you have really sensitive skin, maybe do it more often. Choose a moistorizer for acne prone skin. Sunscreen for outdoors and use a gentle cleaner such Cetaphil. I'm really sorry to hear about that.

Yes, it can. It's unbelievable but it does...
But indeed I think the problem is worsened by the fact the skin is dry. It's like the skin has no elasticity anymore and just tear apart

You know, I think you may be right. I'm guessing that the really dry air here for the cold winter (I also wake up with a shitload of painful boogers every morning, lol) is causing my collagen to rip apart somehow. The reason I say this is the recent arrangement of the newest ones...where they seem almost vertically aligned in a way, almost like stretch marks.

But it can't be the only reason tho, cause I had really dry skin years before that. It aggravates the problem for sure. My skin is drier than ever. But what I noticed is even if I keep my skin moisturized, put a lot of creams/oils or even vaseline to keep it moist, it doesn't keep the scars from appearing.

I have a lot of vertical lines, some longer, some less. The longest one starts from below my eye and goes down to my chin !!
If I smile or yawn, I feel my skin is really streched out. So weird.
At the beginning, only a few scars would appear, but these last days I can litteraly see dozens of news in a matter of days. They can widen, deepen. They mostly shallow but super wide. Some like nails indents. If they are close to each other they regroup and form lines or kind of circles.

Have you been under a lot of pressure lately ?
I feel like high level of cortisol/stress may have cause inside me that kinda immune system reaction...
In the last few months, I got liver, gut, kidneys, and hormonal problems. My health is a mess because of high stress and lack of sleep. Seeing those weird scars appearing has not help with anxiety.

I don't know if any of this has a logic. It seems so unreal, it doesn't make sense.
I wish I could know how to stop the process of scarring but I've read the "spontaneous scarring " thread and I found no real answer.   Plus, no one who suffers from this seems to be here anymore...

Sorry if my english is weird, it's not my native language.
Since you mentionned it I've googled Lupus. I'll ask my doctof for a test. At this point I 'm really desperate to know what is happening to me...  Edited by Kixhikari

I bet it's not a scar. You are trying to tell me a scar that starts from your eye and finishes all the way down to your chin just appeared from out of nowhere? Cmon. Please see a doctor and get some tests done.

I guess when someone doesn't see it appear on its own face he can't believe it.
It's hard to believe myself and it's even more impossible to accept those. Because they appears without logic or reason it's really painful.
Yes it's unbelievable. Yes it appears out from nowhere. I had a good skin prior to all this 5 months ago and now I look like something has destroyed my face. And it continues.

If you do not believe me I can't make you. I'm here to find help or some answers, not to be made fun of.

This would be a auto immune issue and there is very little we can do in the scar treatments sub for it. Why it's constantly chasing a changing goal. To treat for scars one has to be stabilized. For some that's a medication, lifestyle change, or finding the trigger. A famous Plastic once said why fix something if the person will be back the next week with the same problem (the goalpost changes). Please talk to a immunologist or someone who specializes in your condition. Tell them it's destroying collagen. As the biggest organ in our body (skin) when we have something internal there are often issues. Liver, Kidneys and even medications can cause havoc in the gut making these issues progress. Accutane works for some, and for others it's predisone. Research solutions before we deal with systemic issues. Look for solutions if your so inclined naturally naturapath, holistic, ayurveda .

Indeed I want to be stabilized. Maybe because the condition is so rare doctors don't see what is it.
I didn't think of an immunologist, I'll check that too, thank you.

Yeah, I would think the same thing...but something utterly bizarre is happening. Again, I suspect an autoimmune disease like lupus is responsible.

I have other symptoms I haven't even mentioned:

I also have faint brown macules appearing - sometimes within an hour - around my nose/eyes.

In the last few months, I have had an outbreak of what look like sebaceous hyperplasia on my forehand (and a few on my cheeks/temples, and possibly my nose). I'm only 33, so too young to get those.

And back in the summer of 2015, I had an outbreak of these white bumps on my shoulders/upper back that resemble fibrofolliculomas. I was thinking I had Birt-Hogg-Dube' syndrome, but that was before the spontaneous indented scars.

Hey Jordan,
Came back to check-up on you, how your skin is doing ? Do you still get spontaneous scarring ?
Have you been tested for autoimmune disease as you mentionned like lupus ?

I still get those scars everyday. I checked up again spontaneous scarring related messages of Llamar who had this problem too and I found that he suggest to take an anti-histamine. I'm gonna try tonight. I'm desperate as I've been getting those scarring for 5 months now and nothing could stop it.

I did blood tests 2 days ago, still waiting for the results.
I'm gonna see a immunologist as suggested by BA, but damn those doctors are quite rare and busy. Can't get a consultation before april ! Driving me crazy.

I try to not look too much at my face as it is a torture to see it changes so much in that little amount of time.

For your dryness, I can suggest a phytosterols concentrate cream (don't know if it exists in your country tho) it was the only thing that can calm down and hydrate my skin enough to not get that feeling of "ripping skin" everytime I smile or do facial expressions.

Spontaneous scarring has been reported in the literature, and is well known to many scar dermatologist. The book chapter in Rook describes cases dating back over 3 decades. To this date the nature of this event is still unknown. See a good dermatologist, as they can investigate and exclude other rare conditions. Once stable, test patch the area with various methods- filler, subcsion, etc. Saline is a good test to see how one would respond with extremely low risks. Be guided by your specialist. I wish you well.

Thank you for your words Obiwan. I thought HA fillers were safer than saline injections tho ! Why they would be better/safer ?

In my country they mostly got lasers and I do not want to do it. In my case even subcision would be super risky.
I think when my skin is stabilized I'll do microneedling with PRP, maybe fillers. I can"t do peel, my skin react so badly from even 10% AHA.
Most of my scars aren't that deep, but just super large so not sure if subsicion would do something (I have deep scars around the smile lines that seems thetered tho, but BA said it's a tricky area to treat because they are a lot of blood vessels and all).
I wish some people who have the same symptoms as me and healed from it would guide me cause for the moment, doctors I see didn't found what cause those weird scars.

I would love to hear updates from people who are going through this. It's happening to me right now! It started just a few weeks ago. :(
History: I struggled with severe cystic acne until I discovered the regimen here on acne.org in 2014. Within 3-4 months, my skin significantly improved. I was using cleanser, bp, and moisturizer. After a few months I added AHA and jojoba oil. Acne.org products were all I used and within 6 -7 months my skin was completely clear. No scars and even hyperpigmentation lightened a lot. So overall, I have been incredibly happy with my complexion for almost 4 years. Almost no breakouts since 2014 except for an occasional small pimple (few and far between!) and some bigger ones when I was pregnant in 2016 (because I paused the regimen in my first trimester). NOW...I turned 40 a few months ago and thought of adding some anti-aging products to my routine. I added Paula's choice Retinol Serum and after a month I added a 2% BHA. On some nights, I use their VIT C spot treatment on some sun spots and light discoloration. I'm still using my acne.org regimen products in the morning (instead of twice) and Paula's choice products in the evening (or vice versa sometimes). I am very consistent with sunscreen! So when I noticed some pitted scars, I was just shocked. I used to get those when I had the severe acne but they would eventually disappear. And the weird thing is, I haven't had any severe acne lesions in 4 years! Where the scars are appearing now are areas where I haven't had any acne in years! So confused. Please help. I've heard other people mention AMCV? Or could it be the addition of bha or retinol or vitamin c? I doubt it's the AHA because I have been using that for a while with no problems. Or could it be that? Sorry...so frustrating. I thought I was done with skin problems! Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you not confusing an enlarged pore for "pitted scar". Enlarged pore usually means your skin is too damn thin. In another word, you're either exfoliating your skin too fast too soon, or the products you use are too harsh for the skin to handle.

My advice: stay off the current regimen you're using. Let your skin heal NATURALLY. Just wash your face using ONLY water for the next 10 days. Evaluate and report back.

Exactly the same story as OP, since last June. Been on Accutane a number of times (low dose 10-20mg per day). When I went on it last June I increased the dose to 30 even 40mg. Also washed face with harsh washes. This severely dehydrated and damaged my face. I started getting random scars, and pillow lines that stayed for like 24h and I event thought pillow lines will be permanent. Scars were mainly on the cheeks, and on the right cheek where the scaring became most profound (on the place where everything started with two minor acne) I experienced pain varying in degree from negligable to strong. The pain and scarring persisted for 4 months when I finally stopped Accutane and started washing only with water once a day at most. I still sometimes feel the pain and see the scarring progressing on that spot but not major. The doctors were ofc useless, even telling me I'm imagining and sending me to psychiatrists as public health care is very bad in my country, and this is not an ordinary problem. The physical pain coming along with the scarring was killing me also psychically as it lasted for more than 4 months.

P.S. I again take Accutane but only 10mg every third day,  wash with water only, and use light oil-free vaseline-free hydrating creme.

Hello,

since like mid april I have been getting scars spawning on my face. Very superficial many are hardly noticeable under certain lightning. But ita not stopping im desperate I need help. I have read a lot here and elsewhere about AMVC and I 100% have it. How bad can it get ? I have already at least 1-2 shallow scars on every part of cheeks temple area since this started.

So far its stilk okay if it stops i can take it. But i have horrible paranoia about it getting worse with time. Has anybody been over this ? What happened to the members that suffered from this years ago ? Did they get better eventually ? Will this nightmare stop? I want my life back. Waking up with more scars is truly frustrating. I dont mind those that came staying. But soon i wont be able to take this anymore.

i still have light acne and hyperpigmentation so the combination if all 3 is making me miserable. Please people who bave been through this hell reply.

thank you

The doctors are not believing me that they are apeearing spontaneously. They are dismissing my problems and refusing to do any blood tests on me. There were tons of threads here some years ago about this but all the members seem to have disappeared. Im really on the verge of a mental breakdown if this doesnt stop.. please someone help me..

I've had this same problem since joining this site 6 (?) years ago. I've had periods of remission where they stop appearing. But currently it's a constant on & off thing. I went from baby butt smooth skin to moderate scarring all over my face. It's disheartening... I used to model. I haven't tried anything to treat them as of yet, but they're all not deep for the most part, so I'm hoping to get them where they're all barely noticeable. What used to help me keep them from appearing was taking antihistamines. I don't know the science behind why this helped, but it did. Staying away from my allergies helps. I notice more scarring activity when I have periods of sneezing/allergies. I also took an omega 6 (Evening Primrose Oil) & stayed away from omega 3. Now I eat an avocado every day & it seems to slow the acitivity down as well as keeping my acne at bay.

Now i am getting huge pores in a daily basis. Like in lines forming. This is frustrating. Beside my nose are now tons of huge pores which are very easily visible.

This is happening fast... I didnt do accutane nor any lasers nor exfoliation nothing. Im on the brink of a breakdown.

That is a picture of one that formed just today. The line as you can see. If this is the worst then it is a bit comforting but I hope not too many :(

I don't have your problem so I'm hardly qualified to address your concerns, but I do know AMVC is the name of the condition that everyone mentions when it comes to "spontaneous scarring".

I have been through all of them. Most of them dont really seem to have an end. The people experiencing it just disappear a few months into the condition. I dont know if it means it stopped and everything got better or what.

I need something to assure me that this will stop soon because my mental state is at a dangerous position right now because of this.

In 1,5 months my scars are still coming shallow but they have become numerous enough to notice now even from a little distance. Pores are also forming lines and lanes on my cheeks.

My humble experience with spontaneous scarring. Been to many meetings, seen many cases, and the bottom line- it is hard for everyone. For the doctor or dermatologist confronted with spontaneous scars, would they want to treat,...or worsen the condition. No. They want to understand than help. For the patient, its PURE Frustration- no one can explain, nothing much in the literature,no solution... I see you point of view.No one really understands the aetiology of this condition. I have seen 2 cases in the UK, both at the RSM over 12 Years go. Well dermakated crescentic scars, spontaneous with out inflammation. THIS ENTITY DOES EXIST- well published in text books, mainly young women, Persian in heritage, crescent shaped scar. I do not under stand the physiology. All I know is that high powered laser can worsen . I would work with gentle HA Cannular filler. Rule out causes including lupus profundus, atrophic macular scars, Blashkinoid atrophy should be ruled out. IMHO the treatment that is safest would be Cannular Subcision . I have seen one case worse with QSL 1.2 - 6 mm spot 1064- this energy is so low it would cause a dermal outcome in anyone - yet alone scars. True mystery.

Were the cases u saw stable ? Did it stop at some point ? How bad did it get ? I dont even want to get rid of the ones I have out of happiness if it stops. They are shallow so far but are slowly becoming too nunerous.

i just want to see light at the ene of the tunnel. Im tired really..
