Do you HAVE to wash first?

I got clear using Differin a few years ago. I wouldn't wash before using it though. I would just put it on.

Now I'm using Tretinoin and have read that you have to wash first and then wait before applying. Do you really have to though?

Why did the Differin work without washing first?

It should work but not be as effective. When you wash your face, you remove the dirt and oil, therefore leaving a clean surface allowing the Retin-A to penetrate your pores. This goes the same for pretty much any topical. Hope this helps.

I believe I was read and told not to use Retin-A directly after washing but to wait up to 20-30 minutes after.

I just wash my face in the mornings. Washing my face never impacted my acne personally so I just do it in the morning or if my face ever seems oily which is pretty much never anymore.

Retinoids are similar and at the same time different, even tough they belong to the same family, some of them target specific receptors in your cells. 4 years ago I used adapalene (differin), however, I dont remember those 20-30min...

It is mandatory to wait at least 20-30 min. before applying any kind of tretinoin. If you dont, your face might get irritated. I started with retin-a 0.05 and Im currently using 0.1, in 4 months my skin has never looked so great !

That's what I used to do on Differin. I would only wash in the mornings, and then just apply the Differin straight before going to bed without washing and I stayed clear doing that.

But since using the Tretinoin, I've been trying to follow the instructions of "Wash face and then wait 20-30 minutes before applying". I just hate washing my face twice a day and at night my face gets incredibly dry after applying the Tretinoin. That's why I was wondering if maybe my old method would still work of just applying it at night without washing first.
