How much Vitamin A should I have?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I bought 2x Thompson's Vitamin A 10, 000 IU, 75 capsules today.

I am wondering......

1. How much should I have daily to treat my acne?

2. How long to expect results?

Thank-you.

P.S I also bought Azeliac Acid today!

I have been taking 20-40,000 IU of vitamin A for about a month now. (started with 20,000IU a day and worked my way up) results are good. As for the quantity, i think it depends on the severity of your acne. I wouldnt take anything over 40,000IU a day though. I saw noticable results after about 2 weeks.

Mumble and Red2528, taking such high doses of vitamin A is TOXIC. Please please please reconsider and find another option. What you're trying to do is mimic Accutane and it's not the same. Accutane is a derivative of vitamin A, but the same health risks run true for both which is why it's essential to be under a doctor's care.

I agree 100%. You guys need to STRONGLY RECONSIDER what you are doing to your bodies. Want to know the best source of Vitamin A? Greens. Have a green smoothie every morning with greens such as kale, spinach, collared greens, bok choy, mint, and more of the same.

It is best to get all the vitamins and minerals you need from whole natural foods. The 2 supplements I recommend are only fish oil (for EPA and DHA) and vitamin d3 (if you live in a northern climate). All other nutrients need to be consumed through whole, natural foods.

Do yourself a favor and buy In Defense of Food instead of Vitamin A.

5,000 IU is the recommended adult dose. 8,000 IU is for pregnant women. I don't know how toxic 16,000 IU is on the body. You'd have to research and talk to your doctor about that.

A quote from this site:

Vitamin A overdose and toxicity

An vitamin A overdose can be harmful to bones and skin, causing weakness and brittleness, even leading to fatigue and vomiting. Excessive intake of vitamin A is toxic, at dosages of around 20-25,000 IU daily. Consuming more than 25,000 IU of vitamin A per day (adults) and 10,000 IU per day (children) from either food or supplements or both is known to be toxic. For those 19 and older, the tolerable upper limit for vitamin A consumption has been set at 10,000 IU per day. An excess of vitamin A taken during pregnancy can cause birth defects in the fetus. Symptoms of a vitamin A overdose include tiredness, discomfort, lethargy, upset stomach, decreased appetite, vomiting, slow or decreased growth, joint soreness, irritability, headache, drying and cracking of the lips and skin, hair loss, and yellowing of the skin.

Note: "from either food or supplements", so you have to add the amount of vitamin A you get from your food.

Mumble-everyone here is right, Not only do you have to account the amount of Vit A you ingest with food intake, but I notice you have cod liver oil your taking, which is loaded with Vit A....Not smart thing to do, since vit a is highly toxic

Thanks Oli girl. I'm not taking any of the supplements anymore, not because of the harm, but because I am taking Minocycline now.
