Accutane - 2010 Edition (Completed with conclusion)

Recommended Posts

Background

It has been roughly 6 years or so with acne. I tried like everyone else, everything. The last 6 month of 2009 I did not do anything, I did not cleanse or think any particular on what I ate, I had pretty much given up. I was in a hole where I tried many different antibiotics and local treatment with failing results but yet not enough to obtain accutane.

My dermatologist explaind that sometimes you don't always need extreme acne in order to obtain accutane (like many think), in my case I got it mostly because of my mental state. I know a lot of people on this board always like to disencourage us with less acne or even in some cases talk us down. I hope people like that will stay out of this log because this log is dedicated to people with the same condition and always wanted to take accutane but have been turned down.

This is no miracle pill by any means, I am fully aware of that, it can even become worse than it was before. However, if I don't take this course I will go from having a small chance to no chance.

Location

I live in Sweden and accutane is actually forbidden but a specialist doctor (dermatologist) may send in a request that has to be granted and confirmed before I can pick it up along with my blood sample. The good thing is I don't get any generic accutane but the original from Roche, I will only pay for the first box (~$30) and get the rest for free. Obviously insurance is not needed in socialist Sweden.

Me

I am 22 years old male, about 181cm tall and weigh 70kg with mild to moderate acne.

Dosage

20mg, twice a day for 6 weeks.

If everything seems alright the dosage will be increased to a final of 20mg, four times a day. Full treatment, roughly 6 month.

DAY 1

I actually wanted to take the pill with a start of January the 1th of 2010 but I don't want to wait a minute longer and started right away today this morning.

Feeling no regret and will never do.

DAY 10

Day 10 seems to be a small milestone in this treatment and thats why I chose this day to come back and update.

On day 3 I had more spots than usual coming. They disappeard rather quick, like after the weekend. Perhaps they were a bit more massive than they usually are. My lips started to dry early but I put Jojoba oil on them before I go to sleep and also I use lip balm when needed so its not a problem.

I also talked to my Derm today and he claimed that I already had my initial break out, which seemed a bit quick from the other logs I have read. He might be right because I don't really see anything more then usualy on the way, actually it has alread become less but I am not conviced just yet. I think I need at least two more weeks to make that judgement.

Going back for blood sample in mid February.

DAY 17

Up until today my lips have been dry but not a problem, I haven't carried around a lipbalm but just apply when I am at home at random times. But today on work my lips were really really dry and it did not help to lick them as it usually did. They almost looked white.

Skin overall looks better, some flushing problems but I had that before accutane and its at the same level so no side effect from accutane. My nose is terrible, its no acne on it but a lot of blackheads and whatever it is. You can really see that the pores are filled up. I hope accutane will take care of that soon.

Flaking is still a problem, the skin feels moist and good when I leave in the morning but just a couple of hours later the flakes appears. I try to erase it with some jojoba oil. No success yet.

Try using a moisturising cream, instead of lotion, at night. That may help. And the blackheads will all come out, don't worry. Best of luck on your course :)

I see, point taken but I am not sure I want to switch anyway. I am just fed up with buying more product, I am sticking to one and the one my derm recommended. I have spent so much money on products I don't want to throw away more money.

DAY 24

I am using a lip balm religiously but my lips still feels a bit dry but they are not really cracking or going out of control. In terms of break out my skin is really great, I havent really had any real big breakout for a while now and I love that. I still have problems with flaking skill but thats not my biggest problem. My bigget problem is that my skin gets really really hot in my face and red, embarrasing to say the least. Seems like when you sit for a while and stand up or vice verca it seems to increase. Seems like it triggers from almost anything, and sometimes its normal. This must be because of the accutane because I can't recall the problem this big before.

So one problem to another, the acne is pretty much gone but now the flushing is here and I think I almost prefer the acne atm. I will just have to look past it and continue the course and hope it goes away after the treatment is done.

Thank you  I hope you are doing ok!

DAY 50

Oh boy, my nose is clean! From what I can tell my pores are not filled anymore, I feel... fresh! I also found out something good, my lotion 'Propyless' that I use to moisturize my skin. For some reason it works great on my lips. They feel normal after I apply it. The downside is that one have to remoisturize more often, like every second hour.

I have a very bright light in my bathroom, I never turn it on usually but this last week I am happy to look at myself in full brightness. Every morning.

Some other downside is the weather, it is -20 C (-4 F) from time to time which is really hard on the skin. I also havent took any blood sample yet but the dermatologist said it will come up a time shortly for a visit and perhaps an increase in dosage. Which should be OK because my two only side effects are dryness and some increase in flushing but other than that, seems like it is nothing.

I just wish I could have done this 6 years earlier...

DAY 102

Hisashiburi da na! ;)

Lets do a recap. I started around new years eve, the initial break out lasted about one and a half week for me. Of the things I read on the forum I expected it to last 2-3 month, great surprise for me. Since then I haven't had a single spot of acne until I increased my dosage to 80mg a day. A day or two later one spot below my nose came up and dissappeard rather quick. I switch to 80mg around the end of Mars.

The dryness haven't really increased since I went from 40mg to 80mg, maybe a little but less than expected. I have been feeling a bit down latley but there are many things in my life that is causing that. However, there is a little bit of worry deep down that keeps thinking, "What if it comes back?".

40mg: Month 1, Month 2

60mg: Month 3

80mg: Month 4 -> ( Month6? )

My dermatologist did not really specify a date when to quick taking accutane, I think he mentioned to take 420 pills in total. Could this be correct?

The "what if it comes back" is a big fear of mine, too. Well, I'm sure it's a big fear of all of us here. But just take one day at a time. Really, it's out of our control, and worrying about it isn't going to do anything but stress us out more. (I know, it's easy to say that, not so easy to take my own advice. But still.)

I know but I am getting used to be acne free now, I wake up, I am taking for granted that I am acne free actually. The only thing I check for now is skin flakes and broken lips. I also know for a fact that when I stop the medication the flaking will stop so I am not to bothered by it.

DAY 125

Nothing to report really, I am clear, I like what I see in the mirror, the wait to stop the medication is big bug the wait to see if it worked is even bigger. I am enjoying a coke as I am writing this. If I can't drink a coke without breaking out, I am not clear imo.

Talked to the derm and yes, 420pill is the goal but I can take 10 more if I feel like it, no biggie according to him. Since I missed a pill here and there I think I will land on something above that.

However, if you count 6 month of usage you will end up with this. (In my dosage)

Up until now -->

Jan: 62 pills

Feb: 56 pills

Mar: 93 pills

Apr: 120 pills

total: 331

Remaning -->

May: 124 pills

Jun: 120 pills

total: 575

I think I will go June out anyway. Just to 'nuke' it.

DAY 163 (CONCLUSION)

I'm done. I am finally done! 494 pills and 163 days later I am finally done. I actually have six more pills to go but I woke up this morning with broke lips and superdry, there is no point to go six more pills because it will make no difference. I am now eager to regain normal lips.

This journey was actually not that bad as I thought it would be. First I thought my initial breakout would last 3 month after reading some other logs but it actually just lasted around 10 days and then I was clear. If I remember correct I only had one single breakout after those 10 first days in the middle of the course when I increased the dosage. Incredible, I actually take my days for granted that I am clear. Feels good, man.

The side effects I encountered was mostly dryness, incredible dryness. The last month really got out of hands for my lips, I had to rip skin off them all the time and I tell you, its bleeding and hurting. I had some jointpains after doing something that require some physical activity, but almost not noticeble. My mind has been OK, I had some rough times beside the pills so that had the biggest effect. Even though I am doing a lot of changes, like moving from this city, searching to University (I havent bother to searched before because of the acne) I kinda feel that life is kinda boring. It might sound wierd but I guess it is because I have isolated myself the last year and I am trying to regain some friend contact.

Anyway, this thread is about the course and not my personal life. For me, this was a miracle pill but the most important thing I still ask myself is: Will I be clear forever now? I just don't know where to go or do if it comes back.

If everything goes well I will probably not come back to this site, perhaps check if there is some replies for this thread or questions. I might do a follow up but don't count on it.

android developer, signing off.

best wishes bro

Thanks dude!!

Well I am actually back, but don't worry, only good news

It seems my life has took a turn, the pain is over. I got into the University, I actually found an appartment in Stockholm. But best of all, still no acne! Back to normal dryness. I got a red spot, very small and very diminished, don't bother me but I wounder if it is some sort of small version of a pustule? Dunno.

The only thing that is a bit wierd is when I take a shower and then shave (I shave with a razor) my skin gets really tense and red and looks like shit actually, if I perhaps take a 30min nap after and go look in the mirror, all the redness is gone and all that is left is perfect skin. So... not sure what that is about.

Keep on struggling the rest of ya.

Shaving always gets my skin red and rarely irrupted. This is completely natural, the thing is that your skins hair that you are shaving is within the pores, and as you cut the hair, the inside of your skin gets a little irrupted. But it is nothing major.

Tip: iNoticed after you shave if you clean your face with cold/warm water, your skin will come back to normality in 3-5min.

It hasnt always been like that for me, I usually could shave normal before and in the beginning/middle of the accutane course.

I actually just came out of the shower and just shaved with no irritation. I switched a moist cream and I switched shave gel, what a shave, feels really refreshing. I usually after a shave, sometimes I splash water in my face but this time I wet my hand and took off all the excessive shaving foam and then drag the wet hand over my face. After I take a really good towel that I only use for my face and pat it dry.
