Why do antibiotics work initally and then wear off after some time?

Recommended Posts

I have tried antibiotics several times. They clear me up great at first, but then after a while they don't help at all. Has this happen with you guys and what do we make of this? I have mild acne btw.

The p. acnes bacteria can become resistent to the antibiotics over time, just like any form of bacteria can become resistent to the antibiotics used to treat it. Its becoming more and more of a problem. The medical community often recommends pairing an antibiotic with another medication like benzoyl peroxide, in order to help reduce bacterial resistence to the antibiotic. Derms will often just keep switching patients' antibiotic as other ones stop working. You are better off trying to find other methods for keeping your acne under control. Antibiotics are not a good long term treatment option.
