Does it matter what kind of zinc?

Recommended Posts

I've been taking the regular zinc pills purchased from Walmart...it's been about 2 weeks and I haven't really noticed anything yet. I've been having a terrible jaw line break out for the past 2 months and I don't know what to do. I figured zinc would help, but it hasn't. Does the chelated zinc really make that much of a difference?

Hate to say this, but I take zinc for the health benefits aside from acne (immune system), because I feel it really didn't work for me. Hope it helps you. You can always try milk thistle or fish oil though.

IMHO, zinc only works if you have enough of a nighttime melatonin surge to stimulate cells to create superoxide dismutase, which combines with zinc to form zinc superoxide dismutase, which prevents P. acnes bacteria from being able to create inflammation.

So, if you slam down lots of caffeine, sleep about 6 hours per night, go to bed at irregular times, etc., don't expect any noticeable effect from zinc.

OTOH, if you have a normal melatonin cycle (get real sleepy at bedtime, sleep deeply for 8-9 hours, wake up feeling totally refreshed), then probably the modest amount of zinc you get from food will be more than enough.

I heard that it should be chelated zinc. check the back of the bottle and see because apparently there is some sort of difference when it comes to skin.
