Ipledge and Accutane

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone knew if you had to wait a month to start using accutane if you practice abstinence. In the ipledge program brochure it says if you commit to not having sexual contact then you do not have to follow the birth control requirements. I want to start on accutane right away but I'm worried i'm not going to be able to. Does anyone know for sure?

...this is what is said in the ipledge brochure..

You would not have to follow the birth control requirements of iPLEDGE if:

• You have stopped having periods for 12 months in a row (menopause)

and your doctor says you are in menopause

• You had both of your ovaries or uterus taken out by surgery

• Your ovaries do not work and you cannot get pregnant (confirmed by

your doctor)

• You commit to not having any sexual contact with a male at any time for

at least 1 month before, during, and 1 month after your last dose

It depends on your dermatologist.

My dermatologist's office doesn't even allow abstinence as the birth control method because so many people has sex and got pregnant anyway. So for some offices, even if you plan on staying abstinent, they could still make you do the two forms of birth control.

Actually, I think you're going to have to wait a month anyway whether they accept abstinence or not, since you'll need to have the blood tests done a month before you start.
