Well he is most likely trying out antibiotics to see if you can avoid going on accutane. Tetracycline antibiotics can cause bad side-effects if taken with accutane.

I'm having no effect from the tetracycline I'm on atm, other then give me an upset stomach it doesn't do anything for the acne. Still my derm wanted me to go on tetracycline for two months to see if we could avoid going to accutane. The way it's going now I'm gonna start my accutane treatment in a couple of weeks.

Taking antibiotics prior should have no effect on the accutane treatment. Once you stop taking it, it will be out of your system within a day.

the antibioditcs i tried were worthless. they did absolutely nothing but make my stomach upset. i dont think they had any affect on my accutane treatment. i mean, if you can avoid accutane with antibiodics, thats awesome! but i wish i could have skipped all of the non sense over the counter crap and worthless pills and gone straight to accutane 10 years ago! im clear for the 1st time in my life and i LOVE it!

Yeah, my antibiotics didn't do anything either. I would sit in the dermatologist's office, she would look at me funny for awhile, then she would say something like, "Well...it looks...a little better? Actually no, it looks worse. I guess it's about the same. So...are you taking those antibiotics I gave you?"

Still, there's an established protocol that people try antibiotics before Accutane, to see if they fall into the large group of people who actually do clear up from them. It's a "better safe than sorry" idea, and some derms take it more seriously than others. My derm was the most conservative lady on earth (she wouldn't even prescribe birth control pills for acne...I had to get those from my pediatrician!), but after trying out all those antibiotics, even she was starting to talk about Accutane.

The bottom line is, testing your options will make you all the more certain that Accutane is the best (and only) choice.

antibiotics did nothing for my face. i took minocycline for the three months leading up to accutane. however, i have yet to get an IB and i don't think i will [i'm on day 45] so i really think it helped with the IB, like my derm said it would. so i'd say take it for two months. it may do nothing for you, or completly control your IB, i've found it to be wonderful. you can contact me if you have any questions. i'll answer quickly from my log.

Thank you guys so much for all the replies! :)

I love this website! Its funny how we can pay all the money in the world for derms and docs that constantly give you the run around & yet I have been a member here for a few days and have been given the BEST & FREE information on acne that I have ever received!

Hi WhiterShade! Don't you hate getting the run around from these so called professionals? I have been battling this acne since I was 15 (Now 20) and I wish some one would have stopped me and said 'look, anti-biotics is clearly not working for you we need to try something else??!! Yet countless docs still kept prescribing me the same thing...

Hi Myresults_xnow! Im so glad you have had good results with accutane ( I have devoured your log :) ) It gives me hope that antibitocs at least controlled your IB. I think the more I hear about it, the more Im willing to give in to all the side effects of accutane & JUST DO IT :)

Yo Adrienne! You lucky duck :) Congrats on your success. Hopefully I will be as clear as you in a few months
