My Accutane Journey: Completed

Recommended Posts

I'm 21. Suffered acne since i was 15 from a mild to moderate level and i got clear two years ago thanks to Proactiv. However, proactiv stopped working for me suddenly and my skin progressively worsened for the past year and a half until after a myriad of ineffective antibiotics I finally was prescribed 40mg of accutane on the 20th of February.

Therefore my two month checkup is due next week.

First Month:

Results: Not that great. Noticed a slight reduction in acne

Side Effects: Hello there dry skin and cracked lips! The worst side effect for me for sure was fatigue though. I was SO tired all this month.

Second Month:

Results: After a breakout at the start of this month which wasnt quite as bad as i thought it'd be i've been lucky to have a dramatic reduction in acne towards the end of the month. My neck acne is still iffy because i shave, but my face acne is far less dramatic. I've been receiving compliments on my skin condition, so fingers crossed.

Side Effects: DRY EYES. Today i actually woke up and couldn't really see fantastically, my vision has been poor all day, and it feels like my eyes are too tired and can't focus properly. I think this might be associated with the dryness more than any "brain pressure". Im sort of worried about it and will be seeking medical advice if it continues into next week, but i have my checkup then, so i dont know if its worth it. I have experienced headaches but i attribute this to lack of caffeine and a bad flu. I've also noticed my fatigue has lessened slightly. However, i've had slight mood swings and also have had VERY VERY VERY dry skin and lips.

Funnily ive had a few more eyelashes fall out than usual.

Two months down, TWO TO GO. Hopefully the eye problems wont mean i have to dock usage for a month or anything, but its obviously concerning to me as a glasses wearer already looking for laser surgery.

Has anyone else experienced their eyes feeling really tired? Is it anything to worry about?

today my eyes feel very tired, my head feels mildly sore and i still am having some problems with focusing with my right eye.

I have a nurses appointment for bloodwork on monday and then my derm checkup on wednesday so im going to mention it to him.

I can't be sure if its a side-effect of accutane or its just eye strain from too much time infront of my computer doing work.

Did anyone else have this feeling of very dry, tired eyes which found it hard to focus?

oh and im on day 67 of day 120 so im just past the half-way mark. wohooo!

im really worried about being forced to stop though, but i dont think the side effects im having are that serious. I would like to get my eyes checked out though, because knowing that its just because they are dry and maybe getting some drops would be useful.

Today my derm took me off tane for a month until i see an eye specialist to ensure nothings up with the old noggin.

Im sad im having to stop, but i need to be focussed this month on my final university work, so maybe its for the best.

Hope this wont disrupt things long term

Why green with envy? Because i got taken off for a month!? Hahah im actually pretty down about it but i feel soo like spaced out i need to have a break from accutane, because even if its not the cause its definitely not helping whatever virus/exhaustion im suffering from.

It's better to be safe than sorry, right?

I just want to know if this will affect the treatment long-term.

Update:

After my blurred vision i had just under a fortnight off before my derm decided to put me back on at 30mg a day.

As a result ive STILL had blurred vision which NO ONE can find the cause of.

In addition ive now noticed thinning in my hair around the temples. I have VERY thick hair so its not hyper noticeable right now, but my fathers side have issues with thin and receeding hair and baldness, wheras my mothers side are very much the opposite.

I have no idea whats going to happen but im very worried about it and obviously my serious and what feels like worsening eye problems.

I have another month to go and my skin is pretty much not clear right now. Im still getting the odd spot but things are LEAPS AND BOUNDS better than when i started.

Can i just say ANY words of encouragement from people who suffered hair loss / blurred vision temporarily would REALLY put my mind at rest, Im very very worried about these side effects - i really hope they arent permanent.

I'm sorry that things aren't going well. I hope the blurriness goes away soon and you can finish your 'Tane. Good luck with everything.

The hair loss is probably normal. It will stop a few weeks after you stop taking the pills. Happened to me on my first treatment of Accutane (I had 40mg daily).

Hey there. I am sorry that you are going through this but I must be honest with you. I am not sure why your derm. put you back on Tane without first finding out what the problem is or to give you some more time to see if your vision gets better without it. I know you want words of encouragement but I would be concerned also since we are talking about your vision.

P.S. I do worry a lot so take what I say with a grain of salt. Hope things turn out alright with you.

I don't usually post on this section, but I noticed your other posts on the other accutane thread.

I am not sure why your derm put you back on this medication. Just b/c they can't figure out your blurry vision, doesn't mean that it can't ruin your eyes. Some diseases take awhile to show up.

As for hair loss you mention some baldness runs on your dad's side. Well accutane can cause alopecia and for some it grows back after accutane, they have TE. For others it does not w/or w/out family hx.

Taking accutane may speed up the hair loss/thinning.

Anyways I do wish you luck, and if you are worried then maybe you should look into safer alternatives to clear up your acne.

Here is information directly by Roche themselves, maybe read it and print it out for your doctor.

Hey guys thanks for the replies.

Vision: I saw my trusted optician and she basically told me she sees a lot of accutane patients, her boyfriend was on accutane, and its all to do with dry eyes - she gave me some fantastic eye drops which have helped to an extent but she says a lot of the issues are with the light sensitivity accutane can give combined with a current eye problem i already have. She said almost all people with this situation find it goes when they end their course.

Derm: I spoke to another derm last appointment, a respected doctor who's written books on accutane and acne. He basically looked at my skin and told me there is no point in continuing treatment, he said the skin had cleared so rapidly that it would make no real difference having an extra month considering the side-effects id be suffering; as nearly all i have left is red marks and accutane continues to do its job and improve the skin long after the course has stopped.

He also re-assured me though hair loss is a very rare side effect, its usually temporary.

Did anyone else find their skin improve and clear further after accutane? I ask because i still have a few active but very small minor pimples and i just wonder if they're the last of the dying breed. I technically have a month of accutane pills left over, and my derm told me to finish my course which is actually only around 2 weeks. Im thinking since i have 5mg pills i might finish my 40mg a dosage then go onto them until they are done. That'll take me up to about a month when i can quit.

in all, after i finish my final pills, ill only have been on accutane for 3 and a half months, nearly 4 months - technically.

My skin has been getting a lot of great comments from people lately; no its not spanking clear, and yes there are a few tiny bumps still here and there, but ive gone from waking to having 5-6 new spots every day or two to having maybe one a week - and lessening.

Really im mainly left with red marks, and im a squeezer so when i see a tiny tiny clogged pore ill make it all red and ugly. My main issue is just leaving my face alone!

honestly going off accutane will affect it. Well it will take longer to work. I would just stay on it and wear glasses and use drops and what not. Its just dried eyes, right. I'd rather have dry eyes for a few month

well im not going to ignore my dermatologist. Besides, on the NHS you only get the course you are prescribed. I have about 3 weeks of pills left, id imagine ill finish my 40mg stuff then take 10mg a day until im done.

Has anyone else noticed further skin improvement in the months FOLLOWING accutane?

Im not 100% clear yet, only about 95%. I still have red marks and get clogged pores.

UPDATE:

Hey guys, so im one month after Accutane and i've been working out heavily throughout the summer. I also should add its a particularly hot and humid summer here, but anyway, aside from shaving marks i've maybe had a couple of clogged pores and tiny bumps, but nothing significant. Infact, ive not had a 'spot' since about mid June. Aside from shaving bumps.

Red marks are a BIG problem for me right now.

I'd also like to ask everyone what their post-accutane oil experience was, because i had very dry skin up until this week, when very suddenly my skin has become oilier than even it was before accutane. I believe a part of this is the hot weather and also my diet has been off this week, but i just feel its really weird and came out of nowhere.

I'm also kind of worried that oil will progress into acne, but I'd like to hear from you guys before i get panicky!

Anyway i didn't do any real profiley pictures to show my acne journey, but i did go back to January to find this picture from just before accutane.

My face isnt actually 100% clear yet, i still have a few small neck problems and of course there are minor clogged pores, but the return of oil so suddenly is making me very nervous indeed.

FTR i ignored my derms advice and secretly finished my course. I am glad i did, i wasnt super consistent with it in the final two weeks because i wanted to make a smaller course last longer, but I know if i hadn't my acne would not have been cleared at all. I was still battling with it when they advised me to come off.

Update: I bought a toner to try and handle the oily tzone ive been getting, but i havent used it yet. I have noticed water seems to help keep the oil down but have also noticed ive been getting some minor pimples under the skin again; which is worrying.

I hope to god that this thing isnt returning ONE MONTH after stopping accutane :(:(

thank you!

im keeping an eye on the clogged pores ive been getting with the return of oil. Im not used to JUST having clogged pores so i keep squeezing them. Its not helping lol

Okay so today is the first time ive genuinely thought "shit, its coming back"

I had a small clogged pore on my chin which went to a whitehead out of nowhere.

I have a few tiny bumps underneath the skin where i shave and i have several clogged pores which are on the verge of becoming whiteheads on my tzone.

My problem is im a squeezer.

But seriously, ffs, im a MONTH off of accutane with clear skin and it's coming back? I know a guy who was on it two years ago and is still clear!? Am i just being dramatic about clogged pores? I dont know, they feel like spots.

Also the oil im getting is ridiculous, it's definitely a lot thicker than it was pre-accutane, I dont know what to do but because i had such strong side effects im doubtful a second course is on the cards.

Update:

Okay guys today ive got a symmetrical acne situation going on. I got my first "spot" since stopping accutane last night, my face felt very red, ive not been eating or drinking well since ive been sick and suddenly i get a CHEEKBONE pimple.

Then today, its sister on the other cheekbone arrived.

I also have a few tiny clogged bumps on my jawline.

OBVIOUSLY this is concerning for me because im terrified that deep hormonal acne has arrived and is back to stay. I am hoping this is just a flux in my body because ive been a bit ill and v.stressed, What do you guys think?

Well if you are sick then that could have something to do with it.. and stress could as well. Why are you stressed? :S

I would wait a little while before panicking. If things continue to worsen within a week or two then I would make a derm appointment, maybe they can give you something.

Is going on a second course of Accutane a possibility for you?

In the meantime, try to keep your hands off your face (I'm a squeezer too, so I know it's hard). You might also want to try using some topical products to keep things under control.

Good luck!
