Choose your dermatologist wisely

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately I have had not so good experiences with dermatologists. I have suffered from nodular acne for about 16 years, I´ve gone to a total of 7 or 8 derms over the years and none have had a clue as to what to do with my acne. One actually said to me that she couldn´t really do anything else for me, and I actually admired her honestly, because it saved me from throwing more cash down the drain. They have usually entertained me with useless creams and antibiotics that only made my acne worse. Nevertheless, I am sure there are much more competent derms out there than the ones I´ve gone to. So definitely go to one, but remember it´s your money and you have to be in charge of your own health. Do your research. I would pick my derm very carefully. Pick the best one, the most experienced in treating acne. Look up articles they have written in medical journals. Go for the acne expert, especially if you have a more serious type of acne like nodular or cystic. This is not acne to play around with and creams to little or nothing, and time is of the essence because the longer you wait, the more chances of scarring. Give your derm at least 3 months to get your acne under control. Go with a list of what you´ve tried in the past and has failed, so they don´t waste your time trying the same products. Make sure he or she listens to you. If you ask about a certain type of treatment and he or she is absolutely not bothering to listen to you, than switch to one that really cares about you and will help. Some have their hearts in the right place and other don´t. Trust your gut. If all else fails, look to alternative medicine, but keep in mind the same guideline: go to the very best specialist. Don´t go to amateurs. Look for those who have received the finest training and have the most experience. Your health is just too important. Anyway, that´s just my advice. I wish you the very best of luck.

I completely agree.

Second opinions are invaluable. I used to go to a derm who wouldn't listen to a word I said. Either he had the worst short term memory in the world or was just a crappy derm. So I stopped going to him and any advice he gave me I discarded and it's probably the best thing I've ever done when it comes to treating my acne.
