Quick question about indigenous people

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have a quick question about indigenous people. Do the sons/daughters of indigenous people (being genetically of an indigenous race) get acne if they grow up in a "Westernized" civilization?

Yeah, just like before european people came to the americas. Indians didn't had any serious diseases before the europeans came. Even though indians did have some serious diseases in the past, it is when europeans came that oblivious diseases became widespread in the americas. It's history. ;)

Thank you for the information! I wonder if anyone has ever done a study where they feed a group of indigenous people an American diet while still having them live in the same environment.

No such study. That's why researchers are typically careful to say diet/lifestyle/environment. For example, we know most colon cancer is not genetic because a) colon cancer rates in India are much lower than in the U.S. but b) when Indians move to the U.S., they soon have our colon cancer rates. However, that information doesn't let us ascribe a cause, and eliminating genes "only" leaves diet/lifestyle/environment (everything under the sun else). Cancer has taught researchers not to imagine that diet dominates and ignore environment/lifestyle. For example, sedentary lifestyle looks as good as diet for being a culprit in colon cancer, and changing your relationship to sunlight (resulting in lower Vitamin D levels and messed up melatonin cycles that primitive cultures never experience) is clearly implicated in breast cancer.

In acne, non-researchers typically focus on diet, diet, diet. However, there are entirely plausible mechanisms by which environment/lifestyle could explain why civilized folks get acne and neo-Paleolithic tribes do not.

Indians didn't had any serious diseases before the europeans came.
