Since my first day on this site I have made many threads and posts inquiring a bump on my nose that has been there for years (about 5 now).
Here's what it looks like:
Recently I went to a dermatological cosmetic specialist, and told him how it used to be a cyst, and apparently scar tissue has developed it into a hypertrophic scar. For the first time, after going to countless dermatologists, asking what it could be, he said "its probably a mole"
Today I went to a plastic surgeon to ask about it, and he too agreed that it was probably a mole. Apparently moles can be skin-colored too. He suggested a solution for it, and I use the term solution very loosely.
1) a depiction of my nose from the side
2) A microscopic image of the bump. As I assumed, it is merely the tip of the iceberg, and the majority of it is under my skin.
3) He suggested making a football shaped cut around it to entirely remove it out.
4) Of course, this would leave a scar on my nose, perhaps more noticeable than it is now.
He highly suggested not to go this route to remove it, and he was preaching to the choir. Since its a mole, the best solution would be to "shave it off" according to him and the other dermatologist. But, considering the mass of it underneath the skin, it may just grow back after a couple months, and perhaps bigger and uglier than before. He also said shaving may leave a hyperpigmented scar on my nose.
As you can see the risks outweigh the benefits. But he said these are risks, not inevitable side-effects. I can roll the dice and hope things go well, or I can learn to live with this thing that is the bane of my existence. The thing I don't understand though, is if this is a mole, people remove moles from their faces all the time, they don't seem to have these risks, why do I have them? I'm really lost, and I am going to make a decision that may scar me (literally and figuratively) for the rest of my life. So I'm going to muse hard about it, and sleep on it, before I make the decision to shave it off or not. What do you guys think?

hey there!
As you know I have the same problem.
I'm thinking about surgery as well. Isn't it nowadays possible to reduce/remove scars with lasers?
what about electrocautery? probably misspelled it, but i read on this board that they can burn those type of bumps off like a wart.
Im really frustrated with these bumps on my nose as well.
I've heard about that, but it seems a bit primitive, as its really not used in the developed countries anymore. But if it can remove warts without harm, why not this? My best guess may be because warts are growths ON the skin, not growing from within it. I might be wrong. But I'll be sure to ask that question to my doctor before making a decision.
I have a bump on my nose too. I freaking hate it! I had a bad bad bad break out in January 2009. A cystic pimple started to grow on my nose and it was there for an entire month - it was huge and very noticeable. I don't know if I regret doing this, but I picked at it, and it healed pretty well, but now there is a slight slight bump that I notice, but perhaps its not that bad. Regardless, its better than having that nasty cyst on my nose. I dont know if that cyst would have healed on its own. Anyways, I've been looking for various surgeries to get rid of the bump, but I don't think there is any. People who get rhinoplasties are often warned about scarring, but it can be done in such a way where the incisions are less visible. With bumps on the nose, there will be a clear incision on the top of the nose. BAH! I hate it!
Other posters (not the original poster): the bump on this guy's nose has been diagnosed as a mole. If you guys have a keloid scar, the fixes for each will likely be VERY different and entail different kinds of end results as in scarring. Moles are generally more deeply seated than keloids and will have to have a large area excised.
To the OP: go with a plastic surgeon. Excising is the first thing they learn and do most often. Derms and regular family practice docs know how to do it just fine but it's not their bread and butter.
Does every plastic surgeon want 100Euro (about 130-140 bucks) for just LOOKING at the problem? I was told by one i should make an appointment, maybe he can help, maybe not. but i gotta pay, whatever happens!
Yes, pretty much. Consultations aren't necessarily going to be free. You might be lucky and find someone who will put the consultation fee towards the cost of the procedure if you go with the surgeon. You might not. But you will most likely have to pay for the surgeon's time.
I feel for you all, i have the same thing.... I also have stated its the bane of my existence... When i talk to people thats all they can seem to look at.... Sigh... Im trying to learn to cope with it. And i plan on going to the doctor about it soon. But the only thing i can tell you is taht i have been reasarching it for for about a year now, and the only treatment i have come across is plastic surgery. Or physical reshaping of the nose. it know it sounds dumb but one thing that helpled me was not to dwell on it and it seemd to get better. Seems that the only thing that helped me was just to have a positive attitude and just not let it get to you.

i have had several moles removed from my body, and my brothers some from their faces, and the scars left are definitely not more noticeable than the mole. yes they're lighter than your skin, but it looks sooo much nicer and they kinda shrink to be slightly smaller than what the mole was. maybe it's that me and my siblings are extremely pale that makes the light scar invisible, i dunno.
but, oh, i also had this cyst on the side of my nose like you that i ripped at for a few months before giving up, and it persisted for several more months, and then i decided to try again and managed to extract it... hehe i know nasty...but it left a pretty bad scar for a couple years and i can't even see it now. personally i think you'll be fine.
It looks like what I have, and I have a bunch. Trust me, I doubt I have 30-50 moles on my face. The dr could be wrong. I have had dr's tell me all different things about bumps on my face. None of them can agree. It may not be a mole.In fact, if you had a cyst there, it most likely is NOT a mole, but either still clogged up or a scar. JMO
I think it looks like SH.
I have a few cystic acne 4 yrs ago. and it left a few bumps on my nose. it's really unslightly. 2 huge one, and the others are relatively small. I hate it when people stare at it. I look really abnormal with them, esp when i'm a girl!
It is of skin colour, ard 0.5mm. they are firm. It started with big cystic acne. I have pores on the raised bump, I heard from somewhere that hypertrophic scar usually dont have pores on them cos they are not skin like tissue.
most doctor i go to diagnose it as a large closed macrocomedones. some diagnose it with hypertrophic scar. they had been on my nose for 3 yrs. I have pores on the raised bump, I heard from somewhere that hypertrophic scar usually dont have pores on them cos they are not skin like tissue.
most doctor tell me it's really hard to get off. one doctor tell me to try some chemical peels so to thin the skin and slowly the closed macrocomedones will come out. I am really not sure.
anyone who know, or think you know what is it, pls share. Thanks!
