Tomato sauce?

Recommended Posts

It might do if you're allergic to tomatoes.

If in any doubt you may as well give it up for a few weeks and see if there is any difference.

An allergy to one or all of the nightshade family can manifest in various different ways.

Common members of the Nightshade family are:

Eggplant (Aubergine)

Peppers of ALL kinds (includes chili, common red/yellow/green, jalapeno, cayenne etc.)

Belladonna (used in homeopathy)

Allergic reactions can occur to one or many of the above. The most common symptoms of a nightshade allergy are nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, inflammation, stiffness in the joints, migraines and weakness/fatigue.

Sometimes nightshade culprits only cause an allergic reaction when they are raw. I react particularly badly to raw tomato, whereas other nightshade vegetables can cause reactions of varying severity whether cooked or raw.

There is a difference between a nightshade intolerance and an allergy. Many people experiencing a nightshade intolerance can develop symptoms of degenerative arthritis (Osteoarthritis). This intolerance manifests in painful swelling of the joints and the symptoms usually recede within a few months of eliminating nightshade from the diet. There have also been instances of severe back pain being caused by a nightshade allergy.

All of these nightshade foods contain nicotine in some form, although it varies between the sub-groups of the larger nightshade family. It has been suggested that eliminating nightshade from the diet may assist with giving up smoking.
