Stop mino considerably before accutane as the two combined can cause a very severe side effect called pseudotumor cerebri. That's swelling in the brain, a 'fake tumor' that can cause blindness. Your derm should be able to tell you when exactly to stop the minocycline.

Retin A should be stopped at least a week before starting Accutane, but your derm can give you specific instructions. Retin A is a retinoid and so is Accutane, so too much could significantly increase your side effects and redness/peeling/irritation.

There are various lab tests done prior to Accutane usage. Most check liver enzymes to make sure the liver is functioning correctly. Others check cholesterol levels. Accutane can significantly increase liver enzymes and cholesterol levels. As you know, high cholesterol levels are associated with heart disease and strokes. Elevated liver enzymes can indicate that your liver cannot handle the Accutane. The derm may want other tests done that check general electrolyte balance as an indication of overall health, but metabolic panels aren't always ordered.
