Last attempt to get rid of my acne. After that I'm through.

Recommended Posts

This is going to be my last attempt at stopping my acne.

I have had acne for 14 years or so, I'm 26, and I want this to be my last year with acne. I want at least those last three years to be acne free before I hit 30.

I tried everything, and I was down to two last potential culprits that I could do something about: masturbation and lack of sleep.

Well I haven't jerked off since last Wednesday, so it will be a week tomorrow. I had gotten good results in the past doing so, but it seems it was unrelated. My acne has always come and gone away every two weeks or so, never leaving me fully, except once around four years ago for almost a full year, like a short-lived miracle. It was never 100% gone, but enough so for me not to consider it an issue, which is saying something in my case.

So over the past week I have still been getting pimples daily. After a week of no masturbation I'm thinking this can effectively rule it out as being a significant culprit. It seems to have made the situation better, but it is not fixing the problem. The problem with masturbation is that it is usually frequent and lasts longer than normal sexual intercourse. So frequency + duration = hormonal freakout. I'm gonna keep that in control, no masturbation in the week, and if I do so it will be without porn which means I'll do that quickly and be done with;)

Anyway what is my last attempt? Getting regular sleep. I have always had trouble sleeping since as far as I can remember in my early teens. Just this Sunday I went to bed at 9:30, fell asleep because I took half a sleeping pill, but woke up at 10:45 and didn't fall asleep again till around 5 or 6 am if at all, and woke up at 8. Last night I must have fallen asleep at 3am and woke up at 8am (no sleeping pills, and I don't recommend them because they seem to make things worst in the long run).

When I cleared up for a year I remember I used to be in bed at 10:30pm or 11pm, and would fall asleep in around 30mins, and wake up at around 7am or 7:15 the next morning. I was getting regular full nights of sleep, and I wasn't jerking off at least during the week because I had no time (I was doing 12h shifts for months):P

And I noticed that in the past, I healed the most significantly when on vacation, when I get full long nights of sleep.

Right now my problem is that my sleep schedule has been messed up, so starting now I'm going to be in bed at 10:30 or 11pm at the latest and will make this an habit, and I won't be in bed at later than 1:30 on Fridays or Saturdays.

I'll keep this thread updated. This is my last attempt ever at fixing this situation. If it doesn't work, well too bad, life goes on (or doesn't start:p).

I also had acne for a looooong time. I still get the occasional bad cystic pimple, but my acne is MUCH more under control compared to the past.

This is what worked for me, it may not work for you.

I switched to Cetaphil cleanser. I used to wash with all kinds of harsh products, stuff that was abrasive or that dried out my face. Now I just wash twice a day with Cetaphil. Generally, don't treat your skin harshly, be gentle with it. Maybe exfoliate lightly once every week or so. Moisturize when your skin feels irritated or dry.

I use Retin-A at night. I know it doesn't work for some people, and I had a bad breakout when I started using it again after a long break, but now I can't live without it. I think one of the reasons I get acne is that I have large pores. They are hard to keep clean, no over the counter product is effective. Although it's not certain how Retin-A works, it does something to prevent blocked pores and that seems to work for me.

Shave daily. I used to go a day or two in between shaves while in college. The oils from the hair on my face probably contributed to blocking my pores, leading to acne. Like with washing, be gentle when you shave. You don't need a super close shave. I also find that Mach 3 razors aren't a gimmick, they actually allow for a smooth shave.

Eat better. Most dermatologists say diet doesn't matter and it may be true, but I think eating a better diet has helped me. I eat less sugar and fewer refined carbs. My diet is high in protein, mostly in the form of meat. I also eat lots of vegetables and fruits. Even if it didn't affect my acne, my new diet helped me lose weight and get in better shape.

And yes, regular sleep is important.

Well when I was clear for a year I didn't do anything special.

Anyway, today was not good. I had trouble sleeping again last night, felt like I was never actually asleep. I got a breakout today afternoon, I look worst than I have in a long time. I am not stressed or anything. I could feel it all day creeping up, like stinging where the pimples would be, and oilyness. Then it was a breakout, white heads here and there. Now that I'm home I see how bad it got. This sucks:|

I'll start using Proactiv again as directed on the instructions instead of just using the faceash thing, I have bottles piled up.

Sucks, I work with people of my age at work, many young people (we are over 1000 at the office, all young) and it sucks seeing everyone with a clear skin.

Still having trouble sleeping, but not as bad as earlier this week. I skipped lunch today, just ate a banana. Didn't get a crazy breakout like yesterday, but my skin was still oily as always and I got some tiny white heads near my nose and two or so on my jawline.

Still haven't jerked off in almost 9 days yet, but I don't care, it didn't really help so far, but I don't have an urge anyway. I don't want to use the three steps Proactiv formula, I managed to be clear before and I don't want to use it because it stings and makes my face worst after I put it on.

Anyway, going to bed now. Later.

Did alright today, no breakout at all. Had a tiny white head or two but nothing major. Face was still oily, as always. Slept better last night too. Going to bed no later than 12am tonight since it's Friday. Will do the same tomorrow.

No masturbation still in 9 days now, but like I said I'm not even trying to hold back, there is no urge now, and I have stuff to do anyway. But I thought I'd mention it.

I'm still thinking about using the darn Proactiv anyway, I'll try tomorrow morning just to see how I handle it over the course of the day. I'd like to figure out if it's just sleep I need thought.

Wow 9 days, if it was gonna work it would have already.......j/k

Accutane takes up to 6 months to work in some people, so please spend more time testing acne remedies before you bash em. It took about a month and a half of no sex. Then i dropped frequency to 2 times a week. I've been clear for almost a full year.

Clearing up a lot, skin doesn't feel oily except on my nose where it's always oily. I didn't use Proactiv since other than the facewash, I prefer not to. Let's see how things go next week as I keep this up. I'm sleeping better, and I'm gonna keep this going.

So basically all that has changed recently is:

1- Regular sleep schedule.

2- Reduced masturbation (like once or twice a week at most). I have no more urge to do it more often anyway.

3- I forgot I have Omega-3 pills, so I'm taking two a day with a meal.

That's all. So far so good.

Jerked off twice yesterday. Today I got two white heads on my cheek, one is pretty big actually but not fully out (it looks like it may be two on one). But other than that I am fine, my face did not feel oily much today. Oilyness-wise there is a definite link between getting more sleep it seems. Usually it's in the afternoon that my face would start to feel like crap and get oily. Other than the pinching feeling from the two emerging white heads, I did not get that oily face feeling today.

Anyway, going to bed early again. Good night!

Same today, face didn't feel oily, no breakout (my skin is oily, but in the sense that I didn't feel like it was bursting, probably because I had no breakouts). It's a lot better than in the past. We'll see how it goes this next week. If it keeps going at the same rate I'll be glad.

I can relate on how sleeping and oiliness connects. I am currently on a regimen where a part of it is not washing the face. The first few days I didn't wash, oiliness ensue during the day, you can pretty much reflect back light from my face. But whenever I wake up there's no trace of oil on my face but it still get's oily during the day. Then came around 4th or 5th day on my regimen there's significant reduction on oiliness. Today I am on my 7th day and there's little oiliness left which I believe will completely be unnoticeable in the coming days. ;)

Masterbation? Hmm, at first I was in utter shock at the thought of you actually thinking this could be seriously a potential cause...but I can't argue. It effects hormones in your body...just as much as lack of sleep.

I am female so it never occured to me that something so natural could be a culprit. My face broke out immensely recently due to 'sexual changes' that occur always at the same times each month. (I am female but sometimes wonder if my age...being in my 30's may have an effect).

If I am in a realtionship, I always assumed that my face broke out not due to the sexuality but always assumed it was kissing and having my face rubbed against someone else's causing bacterial growth.

I have other health concerns as well, but masterbation? You'd think it would clear the skin?

Could it be wishful thinking? I do not know? I am not going to say it's an impossiblity, but I don't know. I have never heard of such a thing, especially from a guy. All my guy friends have clear skin and they are 'healthy' in that respect. I suppose some are just blessed?

How's the treatment plan going now? May I ask your age and type of acne you suffer from?

Thanks,

Michelle

Ahh, from what I have read...it would appear you a a young one! Hmm. My ex boyfriend who I dated throughout my twenties was very ..ahem, 'healthy'. When I met him I was the one with the clear skin for once in my life and thought I knew the answers back then.

I just advised him to stop scrubbing him face with a face cloth and introduced him to a better line of facial products. His skin cleared up within months. After a few years, he was irked with some mild acne flare-ups and went to the derm and got a topical treatment that seemed to work really well on his skin. He also (I do not condone the use of sunbeds) started to tan.

I have found that the only thing that clears up my face other than Birth control which I cannot use, is actual sun. Tanning always clears my skin up but I do not want to dehydrate or age prematurely. I am turning 32 soon and I still look like I am about 24. I have been been desperately contemplating going back to the sunbeds because I can't stand to be so ashamed of my face and continually isolate myself!

Michelle :)

I'm 26. Masturbation is not the main thing I'm focusing on, I just reduce the frequency, breaking the habit basically.

I think my biggest help so far is good nights of sleep (not perfect but better than usually since I go to bed earlier), and I am starting to think that those big Omega 3 capsules are helping too. I don't know for sure, I started taking them almost at the same time as I started to work on getting more sleep. I take two a day; one at breakfast, the other at diner. I also eat two apples a day, usually with my breakfast.

What is really amazing right now is how my face doesn't feel like crap in the afternoon. This is 100% certainly a result of something that changed, and I would think it's thanks to sleep. If you skip sleeping completely, the first thing that feels like crap is your face and people can always tell from your face if you didn't sleep, so I think there is a clear link.

Usually, at around 2pm my face would get all oily and I would start to breakout. This always happened, daily. But for the past two weeks, other than for my nose my face doesn't get oily to the point where I notice or feel it, and I am getting no breakouts. I am waking up in the morning with no new white heads, and none surface during the day, with minor exceptions.

It's really a big improvement. Let's see if it lasts.
