Done pretending my acne is mild/moderate...

Well, I fooled myself long enough trying to post in the other forum, hoping to God my acne wasn't severe, but all it is now is cysts all over my chin and cheek area. My skin is red and scarring and I hate it.

It started last summer, I thought I was just not cleaning right, but after purchasing every product CVS had to offer, I realized I must be different. I've tried BP, the regimen, ACV, eating healthy, etc etc, none of it worked. I finally asked my parents how I could get an appointment with a doctor.

The doctor ended up prescribing me with a topical antibiotic. I've been using it twice a day now, and everyone is telling me my skin looks SO much better and that the acne is much smoother and less irritated looking, but here is my problem:

I have these tiny TINY white bumps all over my face, that I KNOW are going to turn into acne. I put the antibiotics on them every night, but they all keep coming in as painful red bumps that last for days. Does ANYBODY have any suggestions on how to attack these? There are at least 25 of them on my skin, not even visible unless i stretch my skin and look closely in the mirror. They usually stay for weeks before turning into something bad

Do you think the slight improvement from the antibiotics is a good sign? Should I just be more patient? I really want to go on accutane, I just want this done with. I want to be able to go to parties and smile and be in pictures.

Thank you so much

The antibiotics help kill the bacteria and reduce inflammation, which is probably why you have seen some improvement in your skin. However, antibiotics don't unclog your pores, so the medication probably will not help get rid of the small bumps that you have. Antibiotics should help prevent them from becoming inflamed, but it sounds like they are getting inflamed even with the antibiotics.

For most people with anything more than mild acne, antibiotics alone aren't going to keep the problem under control. You also need something that unclogs the pores and exfoliates the skin. A retinoid is a good option, although there is sometimes an initial worsening of the acne problem on these products (retin-a, differin, etc.). Other options to get rid of the clogged pores are mandelic, glycolic or salicylic acid. You also might ask your doctor about Finacea or Azelex which contain azelaic acid. Azelaic acid helps kill bacteria, reduces redness and inflammation and also helps unclog pores.

Ok thank you so much for the response! I was afraid of that; the antibiotics would help with existing acne, but not stop acne from coming in.

I am really starting to think that accutane is my only hope left :( and it will take 6 months to get a dermatologist... do any doctors prescribe this?

Please, I'm desperate

6 months to get to a dermatologist, seriously? That's crazy. If I wanted to go to a specialist it'd take a week at most. Maybe your normal PCP doc can prescribe it for you.

Damn, 6 months?! Try calling around seriously! Even if you have to drive an hour or two away if it it means you can get an appt. in a month!! 6 months is way too long! Life is short!!!!

Def. sounds like improvement. Cysts from my experience are more painful than the little bumps. Retinoid sounds like it might be best (though the initial breakout sucks from what I hear). Accutane is always an option but I'm not clear on how the two types are different (you might get initial breakout with this too, I know I did).

Holy crap... after spending all day on the phone I managed to get an appointment for this Friday! I am so excited :):)

I am really going to push for accutane; I have heard great things about Retinoids and stuff, and I know they work, but I am going to be honest... I don't want to have to spend the rest of my college life leaving places early at night so I can go spend 30 minutes applying my face and getting it ready. I want a cure. So far it seems like Accutane is all that's available for this. I know the side effects are severe, I have researched the risks, and to me they are worth it. Acne has ruined enough of my life, I'm ready to be rid of it, even if it messes me up for a while. I just want to be able to get ready in the morning and go to bed at night like a normal person.

My problem is that these dozens of tiny white bumps ALL turn into cysts, it usually just takes them about a week or two. They never freaking disappear, and they always come back in greater numbers. My skin is only getting worse, and i don't want to have to wait until my face is permanently ruined for my dermatologist to say OK NOW you can go on accutane.

Now if I can just get the dermatologist to agree with me...
