I took was put on accutane earlier this year. 40mg a day of Sotret. I only took it for 6 weeks becuase I had absolutely unbearable side effects. Joint and muscle pain. Insane dry eyes. Eye Floaters. Acne only got worse during the 6 weeks. Depression and suicidal thoughts. Ringing in ears.

Now it has been a few months since I stopped taking it and I am still having side effects. My eyes are still to dry to tolerate my contacts. But the main thing is ever since taking Accutane my joints crack and pop so frequently that it is scaring me. Literally every joint in my body cracks with any kind of movement. My neck, back, chest/sternum, knees, hips, elbows, ankles, toes, fingers, wrist.....everwhere. My body cracks and pops probably 100 times a day. It feels like in some of the joints they start to stiffen up so that I cant move them, in my fingers for example. I will have my fingers curled up and if I try to extend them they can't really move fully untill they crack.

Any time I arch my back I can feel my chest Pop. The same thing happens when I extend my elbows. I will feel a bunch of pressure building up then I can't move it any further until it cracks.

I have also been noticing that if I am standing for a long time my back, and knees will start to hurt really bad so much that I have to sit down.

Has this happened to anybody else? Will this go away? I only took Accutane for 6 weeks and I have been off of it for about 3 months.

hey, i haven't taken accutane but that seems somewhat serious, have you let your derm or any other doctor know? better have it looked at sooner than later. seems like accutane has dried out your joint lubricant.

best wishes.

Oh God, sorry but I am going to break some terrible news to you mate.

I have been off Accutane for 14 months now and have developed widespread severe joint pain all over. This is what I keep telling and warning people about. It's a joke. My pain is there 24/7 and every joint has been effected. I have been to various specialists and nobody can tell me what's wrong. The pain appeared about 3 months after my course too and I had hardly any side effects whilst on it. I have been tested for arthritis, inflammatory and non-inflam, all my blood results are normal, RA factor, CRP, ESR and Lupus and other auto-immune conditions also ruled out. I don't have any signs of joint damage on the Isotope bone scan I had done and generally I'm seen as a healthy individual. I feel about 80 years old though and am going through hell. I'm only 26 FFS. Every joint in my body cracks too and I assume it's the gradual degeneration of my joints and body as a whole. I reckon I'll be crippled within 4 years time.

I have tried all kinds of supplements from HA, to glucosomine, to ostebioflex to various prescription meds including Bu-Trans morphine patches and pregabalin. Nothing has worked. I'm sorry to tell you this mate, but it's a common story. Prepare for hell.

ONCE AGAIN EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW THAT THE SIDE EFFECTS CAN APPEAR AFTER YOUR DAMN TREATMENT FOR CHRISTS SAKE!!!

Well I was on accutane for 6 months and I really had no severe side effects. If your joint pains are really that bad, I would go see a doctor for that and not just your dermatologist. I imagine with three month off accutane, the side effects should have been long gone.

I have been researching how accutane could have caused the side effects I am experiencing. Accutane has the goal of drying up the oil glands to stop producing so much oil. It also dries up the hyaluronic acid in your body and prevents your body from producing it. Hyaluronic acid is also directly related to the side effects I am having from accutane.

Dry eyes: HA partly makes up the fluid that lubricates your eyes.

Floaters: HA is part of the vistrous jelly inside your eye which can clump together and when light hits these clumps they appear as floaters in you vision.

Slow skin healing: HA helps your skin retain moisture which is essential in healing wounds.

Joint lubrication: HA it part makes up the synovial fluids which are in all your joints and it acts as a lubricant and a shock absorber making sure that tendons and ligaments move smoothly over bone. This would explain the cracking of my joints as well as the pain.

So if I take a hyaluronic acid supplement would that help counter the damage the accutane caused? What other supplements could help? I'm pretty fucking pissed cause I'm dealing with the problems of a teenager and a senior citizen and I am neither.

Anyone have any results with Hyaluronic Acid? Sheefa? Have you tried this? Have your doctors said anything about accutane drying up your synovial fluids?

I am seeing a doctor in 3 days I will tell you what they say.

I haven't had any luck with HA or other supplements for that matter, most make me worse. once the permanent side effects kick in, your body degenerates one way or another, slow for some fast for others. good luck with the doctor, most will deny any fact linking accutane to your health problems

so am I fucked? I can't have this I need my body. My life is based around my physical abilities. I am an athlete. How could taking a drug for 6 weeks cause life long pain. I cannot have this. How can accutane even be legal. Fuck this. My side effects have only gotten worse in the 3 months I've been off accutane. I'm only 22 and I can't stand up for more than a few hours without horrible pain in my back and knees. I feel like killing someone.

Try Vitamin E. I've only been on Accutane for a couple weeks, but side effects (joint pain, headaches) dissapeared immediately after starting vitamins with Accutane. I take 666% Vitamin E, two B pills, a fish oil, and a biotin with every Accutane pill.

I'm obviously not in your position, but as far as I can tell, vitamins can't hurt.

don't lose hope based on some peoples' personal experiences, that is the last thing you want to hear! You have your own outcome which could be quite free from these side effects. It can take months for effects to wear off, so bare with it for some time. HA is good for side effects, also try glucosomine and chondroitin and maybe MSM. Doing exercise is also great, and remember to drink lots of water to stay hydrated which helps.

Remember you didn't take much of this stuff, so you can no doubt make a good recovery. Count yourself lucky, and don't take the drug again. You will get through this, have faith, and avoid looking for negative comments that support one possible outcome. What about the people that recover fully? DOn't forget this accounts for most people who do not get side effects...

I am not condoning this drug by the way, I am opposed to it. But to be honest with this guy is the best thing, and I say what I mean. I hope you pull through mate, just give it time, and stay positive!

HA supplements did nothing for me. I've tried them all for months. It's not actually a 'physical' pain so to speak because I've had various MRI scans, isotope bone scan, joint assessment, surgery to test synovial membrane and fluid and various blood tests - all come back negative.

It must be something serotin related that affects the mind. Accutane is a death drug. Sadly the physical side effects tend to hang around for a long, long time so just hold in there matey. People don't understand how bad things can get from this drug.

Bandito,

I'm so glad I saw your post. I've been having the same problems for about a year and a half. I was taking 20-60mg of Accutane for 12 months. I had a severe allergic reaction to a product used at my place of work, and was given this drug. I had quarter sized, blood-filled welts all over my face, neck and shoulders. One of my eyes was swollen shut for over a week. The 1st few months were completely unbearable. I had more than a few suicidal thoughts, but once I began to see results, about 4 months into it, I was willing to stick it out. My situation was so severe that it required 12 months on the pills. I thank god for getting rid of my condition, but it left me with another frightening situation. Every morning I wake up and walk upstairs and it sounds like firecrackers are going off. Each ankle/foot cracks about 5-8 times PER STEP! In fact, for about 3 months, my knees kept popping out of socket when I sat "Indian style", which caused excruciating pain. Again, when I wake up and make a fist, all my knuckles pop, and if they don't, they feel stiff and I end up popping them just to feel the relief. My knees, neck, shoulders, elbows, every toe, every finger, every knuckle, every joint in my body seems to crack on a daily basis. It is embarrassing to say the least. There is no doubt in my mind that Accutane caused this. I am turning 22 and my family has spent countless "thousands" of dollars on steroid injections, laser treatments, and "under the knife" surgeries throughout this process, which has still left me with 3 inch hypertrophic/keloid scars on each of my jaw lines. I understand your frustration to the fullest. I have seen a few "[Removed]" websites over the web and hope to one day receive compensation.

Best of luck!

Jeff

This is going to sound insensitive and I don't mean it this way at all because I must say, reading that made me really sad and I feel awful for you. I really hope that eventually goes away. All I know is to take Vitamin E. It really does make a difference... but why should you get compensation for a drug that has warnings written all over it, in order to warn and protect you? Nobody forced you to take it. And there were warnings on the package and in the information pamphlets. And it cured your initial condition.

I am all for warning people about Accutane and telling them your terrible experience with it, but I don't quite understand (or see the appropriateness) of the "I'm gonna sue them" or "I'm gonna get lots of compensationg for what they did to me" mentality.

I also don't want to sound insensitive but it's true. Everyone that goes on it has to be aware of the serious side effects and has to prepare themselves for the possibility of the permanent side effects.

But I am truly sorry that you are going through this and I hope there is an end to your pain soon.

Both of you have no ideal the pain and suffering thoose affected by Accutane go through, esspecially when it hits the joints. Maybe you should read Sheefa's posts. You have no ideal what it is like to go through daily pain with no relief from Nsaid's, pain killers, supplements and such.

When Accutane effects the joints and bones it is nothing like someone with theese problems from aging or general joint problems, but if it does happen to you, you will feel the same as the poster.

Jeffb1987- Have you had any bone scans, dexascan, have you tried any supplements, stayed away from Vit A? Have you had all Vit d levels checked.

I would advise you to google Bill Sardi and buy his E book, it use to be online for Free, but copyright issues prevented that.

good luck, I feel you, the pain sucks, however you won't ever get compensation or be able to sue Roche for joint pain, the only thing would be for gut issues that they hid info on and did label.

The reason people wish to sue is for side effects not listed or the fact that the side effects claim to be temporary. Accutane induced rosacea or thinning of the skin was not listed within I pledge or in the claravis packet when I took it. People wish to sue, because they hope that maybe with the compensation they can afford to find a cure to their myriad of side effects, or at least have some compensation for the destruction of their lives..

DONT TAKE ACCUTANE

Took Claravis for 8 weeks almost 1 yr ago. I stopped when I was sent to the ER at 4am with vertigo and severe nausea. While those symptoms persisted I also added Joint and muscle pain (especially back, neck, and knee) 3 months later. Never in my life have I had cracking in my back or neck, now they are both severly stiff and an xray revealed developing scoliosis where none was previously.

I was an athletic gym rat at 29... and now a year later I feel like im 79. For a while I was mystified by the symptoms but now I am convinced that this drug messed up so many systems in my body. If I can continue with my post back education I am a pre med student who is aiming for R and D in neurology. I will figure out what this did to me and I will look for recourse.

Hello everybody,
First of all, I would like to express my sincere thanks for all the information that you have shared because it will be very helpful for the rest of people who has been affected by isotretinoine. I would like to send you my support to everyone who is suffering long term side effects. I'm sure that we'll find a way to get out of this hell. Isotretinoine is poison and should be immediately banned.
I don't have any solution for healing our side effects but I would like to expose my situation. I had a non-serious acne problem in my back and 6 years ago my dermatologist suggested me to take isotretinoine. At that moment I enjoyed a healthy body and was running and making sports regularly. When I started taking this drug I got a little pain in my both Aquiles immediately. I stopped running while I took the drug. I can't remember how long I took it, but I guess it longed about 1 year 20mg every day. My aquiles joint pain never went off and I have done all kind of therapy since then. As this joint pain was my only symptom I didn't relate it with the drug because all doctors told me that there was no relationship. However a couple of years ago I started to suffer pain in my lower back. I have done all kind of test and doctors can't say what's wrong with it, but they discovered that my intervertebral discs are extremely dry. They say that this dryness is not normal in a 37 years old guy. Since then I have realized therapy in my back with osteopathy, chiropractic and fisiotherapy. Every single day I have done exercises and the pain hasn't decreased, it even has increased significantly. Some months ago I started to suffer joint pain in my elbows. Doctors still say that these problems are not related and it is due to the fact that my muscles are not flexible enough. Then I started to investigate and discovered lot of people in internet that is expericieng the same joint issues because of this damned drug. From now on, I won't listen any doctor who deny the side effects of this drug and I will concentrate to investigate how to repair the long term side effects of isotretinoine.
I have read part of this thread, but it is so huge that it's difficullt to get final solutions. That's why I would like to send some questions to the people that have suffered joint pain:
1. This thread started in 2008. Since then, has anybody reduced or totally removed the joint pain caused by isotretinoine or nobody has found any solution yet?
2. If nobody has found a solution yet, the joint pain is stable or it is getting worse every year like a degenerative disease?
Thank you very much and good luck to everyone.
Xavier.
