Jay-Z Raps about his Acne in New Song "History"

Recommended Posts

"while victory wasnt watching, took chances repeatedly

as a teenage boy before, acne

before i got proactive, i couldnt face she

i just threw up my hoodie, and headed to the streets

thats where i met success, we lived together shortly

and success is like lust, she's good to the touch

she's good for the moment, but she's never enough

everybody's had her, she's nothing like V"

From his new song "History." It's a really good song about the differences between short lived success that everyone experiences and everlasting victory. I think his point about acne was that it held him back from victory, which is pretty much how everyone here feels.

Cool song from Jay-Z.

Nas always was better though. Illmatic rocked.

EDIT: The cynic in me thinks that Jay-Z would have taken quite a large royalty from Proactiv to drop their product name in. What you think? Snoop was taking royalties for dropping 'Big Mac' into his rhymes. Damn mainstream rhymes. He used to be good.

Jay-Z's new album is going to be the shit. I loved Swagga Like Us, and this History song seems good too. His raps are really maturing obviously, he can't talk about the same things that he used to, but its still fresh.

You look at R.Kelly; dude's pushing 40 (or is already 40) and still talks about going to the clubs lol.

On another note, Blueprint 1 is one of my favourite albums of all time (up there with The 7 Day Theory and Until The End Of Time by Tupac). Ether was a good song, and Stillmatic was a good album, but the shit on Blueprint was amazing. "U Don't Know" is still on my playlist.

But yeah, as far as him dropping this goes, thats sick.

Went from, Nasty Nas to Esco's trash

Had a spark when you started but now you're just garbage

Fell from top ten to not mentioned at all

to your bodyguard's "Oochie Wally" verse better than yours

Use your - BRAAAAAAAIN! You said you been in this ten

I've been in it five - smarten up Nas

Four albums in ten years nigga? I can divide

That's one every let's say two, two of them shits was due

One was - NAHHH, the other was "Illmatic"

That's a one hot album every ten year average

Don't be the next contestant on that Summer Jam screen

From 30 Somethin:

"Young enough to know the right car to buy yet grown enough not to put rims on it."

I like Jay-Z a lot, but he is so commercial. As soon as he mentioned proactive, I too thought he probably got something out of it.

From the lyrics, it sounds like he is saying he had acne when he was gettin in the game. That was like in the 90s. I don't remember proactive then, do you?

He may not have used proactive himself but he is obviously aware of it and is using the double meaning and saying he was proactive about his acne just as he has been in the rest of his life, very clever line. The guys a genius!

Nas might be slightly better than him lyrically but Jay-Z picks better beats, is a better performer and all round better hip hop superstar.

Tis great to see that one of my idles, and a man who is now so succesful, has had similer problems to those that I'm tackling now
