My doctor recently prescribed spironolactone because minocycline+duac+differin were not effective enough and i have a couple questions about it.

1. please post if you did NOT have a bad initial breakout (a few new pimples is ok) and why you think that is?

2. how long was it before you saw significant results?

3. is it more effective with birth control pills?

hey pink-shoes! i've been on spiro (75 mg) for almost 2.5 months now, and i never experienced an IB because of mino (50 mg). i think anybody who is trying to avoid the dreaded IB when going on spiro should simultaneously ask their derm for a low dosage of an antibiotic (because after all, you shouldn't be on antis long-term; you want to gradually wean yourself off them anyway). in your case, since you're already on mino, stick with it if you're going to go on spiro - i think mino tends to be the most favored/effective choice of anti for people who start spiro. and don't be disheartened that mino isn't working on its own; sometimes it takes another med (spiro here) to create that magic combination. so that's basically why i didn't have a bad IB =P

to answer your second question, i started to see results pretty much within the first week of spiro - nothing miraculous, by any means, but a steady and significant improvement in my acne. although, thanks to my super thin, asian, skin, i'm the proud owner of quite a few battle scars (reddish brownish marks)... sigh. but i use concealer - almay stick liquid concealer does the trick for me - and a touch of blush to cover it up.

the bottom line is, stick with the mino and go for the spiro as well! good luck :D

so i started 100 mg of spiro on saturday along with 100 mg of minocycline and its 5 days later and im breaking out...

This could be a coincidence and not due to the spiro but i really think its the sprio causing it (despite the minocycline). This is really depressing and i cannotttt deal with my skin getting worse right now :(:(:(:(:(

To prevent an IB, take the antibiotic for at least a month BEFORE starting Spiro. I did this, and did not have an IB whatsoever. even without an antibiotic though, I've seen many posts from women who have not had an IB. Don't forget to use the search option on this page to review older posts about IBs.
