Accutane-My Log. Support Me:)

I am starting my accutane treatment tomorrow and I just wanted to say that I am both excited and nervous. nervous for the purging period (hoping it doesn't last the full 5 months) and excited cause this could be the final cure to all my problems.

I need some help from you all though. As much support as I can get, I'll take it. I'm going to try and post everyday here, to keep you updated and give myself a little writing therapy.

Another question I have, what do I do to my face besides taking the accutane? I know everyone washes their face with cetaphil and moisturizes like crazy, but i have really oily skin and what do I do until the dryness comes into effect?

Also, can i treat the zits I get during the purging period? I have darker skin so every zit i get scars no matter what so can i still treat them with lemon at least to prevent the scarring? can I use BP or any other spot treatments?

any other advice I can get about what kind of regimen I should have from day 1 would be amazing.

Thanks everyone and I'll write back tomorrow!

Hi jmoon,

I just started accutane 2 days ago so I wish you all the best as well as you start it (and of course for the whole treatment).

I completely relate to you because I have darker skin, and no matter what precautions I take, my skin is left with a dark mark in place of a pimple that has just healed. It's a pretty annoying reminder of what use to be!

I'm keeping a log as well, so you can check it out at: http://www.acne.org/messageboard/My-Accuta...og-t203908.html

I'll be sure to check back on your log to see how you're doing, especially since we've started around the same time.

All the best. Talk to you later,

Nali

good luck! I finished accutane 2 weeks ago, and althought there are some (pretty dark but fading) redmarks, it's such a nice feeling to be rid of acne (for now at least :P)

about your questions...

i've read alot of stuff on here about NOT treating any of your spots while on accutane. unfortunately, you'll be stuck with them for longer than you're used to because of a weakened immune systyem, but it's all worth it in the end.

as for what to do before oil goes away, it's not that big a deal since oil disappears within 2 weeks...

for me, my normal schedule was to wash in the morning then apply moistuizer + sunscreen (sunscreen is a must in the summertime, go for spf 40+), then wait until night and wash it off and reapply the moisturizer. it's a good idea to avoid washing your face more than twice a day, since it could make it dryer and more inflammed!

cheers

thanks to Nali, Roxy (even though you didn't say anything) and Jklaq for their support and advice:)

I figured treating the spots with some lemon would be ok, since it just minimizes the chance for scarring. Nali, you should try the same thing, spot treat the pimples with lemona few times a day, fresh lemon, and the mark afterwards is always lighter than normal. then it;s easier to fade.

Anyway,

DAY 2

I took my 2nd pill this afternoon. Can't say I woke up looking any different this morning, however I did feel better probably because I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

Im washing my face with cetaphil cause i have some leftover in the house, but I think i'm going out to by something else. also, i found a really good sunblock by fruit of the earth, its oil-free spf 45 so that should work since Jklaq said to get something over spf 40.

I'm pretty psyched cause I bought some aloe vera gel off the internet, its by jamieson and I'm pretty sure it's a hundred percent, but I do know that it also has cactus and something called Yucca in it. that should work as a good moisturizer and help with some of the red spots (so I hear!).

I also use vitamin e oil on some old spots, which i've been doing for a few weeks and it seems like its been working. Also, whenever a new one pops (i try not to, but sometimes it pops when im washing my face) i put some polysporin on it to reduce the scarring. Something you should maybe try as well Nali.

Anyway, I'm super pumped and I think I'm the only person on the planet who is looking forward to their IB just because I'll know that this stupid medicine is working!

DAY 3

I took my third pill this afternoon.

So i woke up this morning with a small pimple beside my nose, I've beenicing it to make sure it doesnt develop a head which is working. I don't know if its because of the accutane or just a normal pimple, but its not too big so it's ok.

I also keep treating the one active I have with lemon and will continue to treat all my actives with lemon to make sure they dont turn into scars.

Back tomorrow!

Hey nali

thanks for dropping by. Here's an update.

DAY 5

So My IB may be beginning, in addition to the one beside my nose, I got a new one on my forehead, small and pink. And a few other blackheads popped up on my forehead. Damn! i hate this IB! I'd be generally clear for a week or so, so this sucks(n)

The oil effects of the Accutane havent kicked in yet, so can i use ACV as a toner? mixed with water of course. I have some old and newer PIH and it's really bothering me. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hey jmoon

I wish you good luck on accutane. It's def. a bumpy ride. My suggestions to you as of now, is to let accutane run its course. Don't add any extra drying effects to speed up the process. The IB is going to happen regardless of what you do. I tried spot treatment, washing my face with BP, SA cleansers and it all dried out my face. Your skin should start to get dryer in the next couple of days. I'm here for full, 100% support because that's exactly what I was looking for when I started accutane. Check out my log I have about 1 month of accutane left, pics are included ! What i do reccommend is Aquaphor for your lips because they will start to get dry and chapped and annoying ! What mg are you on? Well good luck again, if you have any questions, don't feel shy to ask I'm here for you

xx ChapinaCutie

DAY 6

Almost at a week!

the IB has defintely begun, a few pimples cropping up, one small one on my chin, and I NEVER get chin pimples so thats new.

Anyway, lips are starting to dry a bit going to pick up some aquaphor (as per chapina's suggestion)

I also got my aloe vera int he mail today:) it's not one hundred percent though it's by jamieson, soothing and moisturizing aloe. I heard aloe vera helps with scars but will this one?

Here are the ingriedients:

Water, 100% Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, methlyisothiazolinone, methylchloroisothiazolinone, Cactus flower extract, Yucca Extract, FD&C Blue No.1, FD&C Yellow No.5. Someone pleas let me know if this well help with red marks, and if not, where I can order 100% aloe vera from. (I live in Canada)

Anyway, I want to thank you chapina for your support:) i'm on a 40/mg right now. i'm pretty nervous not that I see some IB, so i'll need you! You said not to use anything to dry skin, but does 50/50 ACV diluted with water dry out my skin? I have no idea if it does, it doesn't feel dry after. I just want to fight both red marks and acne at once, I know i'm trying too much maybe.

Ps. Chapina your progress has been amazing, you look great now!

But overall two questions this time...will this aloe vera I bought help with redmarks (old and new) and is the ACV when diluted 50/50 to drying/should I not use it while on accutane.

Thanks:)

DAY 7

So i dont know if its the IB that is giving me pimples or my skin not getting any acne meds. BUt i think its the IB. Anyway, my skin looked kind of waxy and oily today, more oily than usual i don't really understand why.

But anyway, today I felt pretty confident about my skin, just not my forehead because i have some zits up there.

Stayed outside all day which was awesome, and i didnt really think about my skin at all. It probably looks the same as it did last week, but the fact that I'm on this med makes me feel more confident that it will change soon!

To better days:)

PS. Someone please reply to my questions from DAY 6.

Thanks:)

Hey jmoon,

I wish i could answer your question about the aloe vera, but i'm not too educated on aloe vera and its effects. Anyways, you're about a week in so if you start to see new pimples, it most likely is the IB. You're skin will start to dry out soon. Don't forget to add sunblock everytime you go out. I can't stress that enough because about 2 weeks ago, i went to an amusement park and got the worst sunburn on my back. It hurt and i wanted to cry every time i layed down lol. I guess you could use the ACV but i've never used that before and i wouldn't put too many harsh things on your skin since accutane slows the healing process. Meaning, your red marks will fade but not too much during your course, but I hear that once you're off accutane your redmarks start to disappear in about 3-4 months. Anyways, thanks for taking the time out to read my log and I look forward to reading about your process. Every day closer, is a day closer to clear skin. It'll go by faster than you know it !

thanks to everyone for their support it helps alot:) Chapina, i do dilute the ACV more now, 2 parts water one part vinegar so it isnt irritating and it is helping alot with the redmarks already.

DAY 11

My lips are super dry, cut in the right corner. i moisturize them a lot so it isnt that bad but it hurts to eat anything where I have to open my mouth wide, like a burger or something. drinking alot of water is helping too, my skin is getting less oily, but it still kind of oily. the aveeno is helping keep some moisture and doesnt increase oil at all which i like.

to make myself feel better about this whole predicament i bought and iphone today. super cool, i downloaded this application that listens to any song and tells you the name of it and tells you where you can buy the song, or listen to it on youtube. i was using it like crazy today. awesome distraction. Anyway, thanks again for the support and talk to you soon:)

Hey everyone!

DAY 16

Basically, my IB seems to have slowed down after i got only like 4 pimples or something. I don't know if it's a good thing, or a sign that the accutane isn't working? who would've though I'd be longing for zits! anyway, my red marks have started to fade and my skin tone has never been this even. I think I owe that in part to the ACV and the accutane as a combo. But these past few days I'v e been really confident, next weekend I have a wedding to go to and I think i will be pretty much clear (no actives) at that point. Is it normal to not have many pimples crop up in the first couple weeks?

anyway so far my one side effect has been dry lips, my skin is starting to flake a bit but it isnt dry. my scalp has also been really itchy and is flaking a bit too. I'm beginning to get more and more confident and since I stopped stressing about zits, they stopped creeping up on me.

I'm excited:)

DAY 19

So basically skin is getting drier. It's still kind of shiny a few hours after i wash, but it's a lot less. it's starting to flake after i wash, and my lips are dry too but its not too bad. I have three actives, that are dying, one above my right eyebrow, a small one on my lips (that i popped yikes!) and one on my left cheek. all arent too big, though the one above my brow is cystic, its been there for awhile. I'm still dirnking a lot of water, which i recommend to anyone on accutane. I'm still using the acv, whish is really helping with the red marks. they have gone like 60% in like 2 weeks, its insane.

Anyway, i'm having a great time so far on accutane, it hasnt been too bad and the marks are going down so i'm feeling more confident than ever. :)

I'll check back soon:)

How dark is your skin tone? Use sunscreen? How sun sensitive do you think you are currently?

Anyways, good luck! Nice to hear your red marks are fading with acv...those marks are very annoying to have!

Hey, just coming in to support you. I'm going on accutane myself and so I'm reading as many logs as possible.

About the aloe vera, a lot of people say it helps and all, but scientific studies showed that it was a myth. It's a good moisturizer and that may be why it's useful for the skin and the skin heals best in a moist environment, but compared to placebos, there was no difference. Sorry not to be the bearer of bad news. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but since you asked, but hey! Scroll down to "dry skin" and "wound healing": http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/aloe-vera/NS_patient-aloe

It seems the ACV is doing the job anyway :)

Hiya

Hope you're doing well. I just have a question. How exactly does th ACV work? I'm thinking about trying this once I get off 'tane in a couple more weeks. I no longer have to fight an acne battle, but a redmark battle lol. take care

hey everyone!

i'm back. I was on vacation for awhile which is why I havent posted.

Thanks for all the support.

Chapina, i'm not sure how the acv works exactly, but I know you should dilute it at least 1:1 with water maybe more water if you are more sensitive.

DAY 31:

Right now, I have no actives! i went to my doc a few days ago and got my net 2 months prescrip. she upped my dosage to 60/mg which is 40/mg on odd days and 80 on even. she told me everything was healing well and that i'm making more progress than she thought I would have at this point! :) so I really happy, the red marks are fading, no more slowly than before, but I still apply acv and water every night which is helping. my lips are still really dry but thats about it, no other complaints.

I love this medicine! it make me feel so much better, even if i do get an ugly pimple, i know its one of the last bunch because i'm actually taking serious action against my acne now. so even when i breakout now, my self-confidence is high because I know the meds are working:)

anyway, i'm back from vaca now so i'll post more often. thanks again everyone!

I'm so happy for you ! My derm always told me I was improving much more than he had expected. Be prepared for dryness as you are taking 80mg but that's just a small problem. Glad to hear things are looking up for you. I have about 16 days left ! I'm scared/excited/happy/sad ! !! lol

That is such a great way of thinking about it. It's what I try to think of with my breakout...

Good luck (even though it seems you've already had that only 31 days in!) :)
