Hello, help newbie with sev. acne

Recommended Posts

Its been awhile since I've posted. Tokyo was alright, I stayed 2 days even though my appointment was only 4 hours, so I had extra time which I used to build a computer. but, I digress... My skin feels a lot better, the large nodules on the sides of my face have gone down at least 80%.

I'm not exactly sure what my treatments were. When I got there, a team of 4 dermatologists assessed my skin condition, and set me up for the best treatment methods available in Japan. Started with some nurse wrapping a hot towel on my face for 10 mins which felt great. When that came off she applied some sort of vit. C gel on my face, put a mask over that and added some more gel. With something that looked like a miniature paint roller she applied a small electrical current to my skin with even more gel. It didn't hurt and was actually a pleasant buzzing feeling. They told me this was to make the Vit. C gel penetrate deep into my skin. They then peeled off the mask and set me under blue L.E.D. lamps to bake on high for 30 mins. When that was over my skin felt dry and irate, but they had a whole mess of moisturizers and gels to apply after I washed my face. I went on some unknown antibiotic for a week that's only available in Japan which seemed to help a lot, along with all the gels and creams they prescribed me.

--I don't think the gel they prescribed me was a topical antibiotic, it promoted the shedding of dead skin cells.

I took a pic of my skin when I was waiting in the lobby. I'm not sure how much better my skin looks now, but I know it feels a lot better. I'll post up some pics before my next visit, which is in a week.

dont do accutance!!! and it looks like ur dont have scars so DONT PICK IT!!!!

get erythromycin gel....it works really fast, will probably reduce alot in a few days

drink water!!!! alot of it...make ur pee in a white-ish color! and this is just for fun....eat up 130lbs for 6' is no bueno

Thanks for the responses and feedback everyone. It gives me strength to know that I am not the only person that is suffering from or has suffered from very bad acne. Some of you had some questions and i don't feel like quoting everyone so heres the skinny:

* yes i have tried Sodium Sulfacetamide Lotion, benzaclyn, retin A, differin, along with a few other things my previous derms have given me.

* I take vit A (think I listed that in my OP) but I'll look into Beta-carotene.

* My mom had acne, but nothing severe. Don't know about my dad, lost him when I was 13. I'd say its probably hormonal since I seem to be a "late/long bloomer" and I don't have much in terms of facial hair yet. Plus I was in a near fatal plane crash when I was 13 :injured: and I think the stress might have caused some irregular hormonal activity. (started developing gynocomastia when i was 14 and when that went away at about 15 or 16 I started getting bad acne)

* Dan's Regimen went well for the first 4 weeks. Then my acne started getting worse again, then even worse than when I started. When I heard BP causes pigmentation I didn't think it was worth continuing. :silenced:

* I have the occasional zit on my back/chest, maybe once or twice a month or so... The back of my neck used to be worse but its been pretty clear for the last year or two. atm they are completely clear.

______________________________________________________________

Okay I hope I answered everyone questions. I will be going to Tokyo tomorrow to see acne specialists (supposedly the best in Japan) and I'll let you all know how that goes. Hopefully they will have some sort of miracle cure. I'll probably take some pics before I leave for some comparison shots.

Would any of you want me to start a blog?

do the Accutane bro best decision you will ever make

If this new stuff doesn't work I also reccomend Accutane. A dermatologist would prbably have no problem perscribing to you. Derms closly monitor you while on it so there really isn't anything scary about it. The moment you feel discomfort with it, just stop taking it.

Hi EMP,

I am new here, but not to acne! :) I've suffered with it for about seven years now. When I have a really bad breakout, my face looks about like yours (yeah, I pick :snooty: ). I noticed that junk-food makes my face breakout fairly regularly, but you said that you've been eating healthy...

Here are some healthy things that I do to cope with acne --

--- Try upping your intake of vitamin C. It is a great healer. In addition to taking it in pill form, I also apply it in liquid form to my face (Double C - Vitamin C Serum). It is sticky, but that's the only con. It seems to work pretty well.

--- I read a health book that says that the maximum amount of zinc that you can take daily to help acne is 150 mg. I tried it, and it seemed to work very well. Just make sure to balance it out with copper.

--- I also spray my face with Colloidal Silver Water every night before bed. (The newsmedia has downplayed it recently, but it is harmless in smaller amounts. Most health food stores should have it. You can drink about one oz. a day.)

--- I use to take Minerals In Solution (by Mineral Rich) drink, taking 1 oz. daily. I did for a while (need to get some more, that's why I stopped), and, combined with drinking lots of water, taking my vitamins, and taking 1 TBSP. of codliver oil every day, I saw amazing results. It didn't keep the acne from coming back, but I did notice a big differance in the healing process.

--- I also use hydrogen peroxide on the open bumps when I'm desperate. That hurts, and causes a white, bubbly reaction, but it cleans the wounds out... It does dry out your face, though.

All of these things work if you are consistent with them. I still struggle with acne, but all these things combined have helped a lot. I hope this helps you...

I suggest trying Niacinamide pads available on Amazon.com. There are several research articles touting efficacy of topical Niacinamide in treatment of acne.

Welcome brother!

I know this place is probably the last place you want to be welcomed, and all of us have probably felt this way one time or another during our affliction. However i think you will find this place to be a veritable spring of outstanding advice and comfort. There are many amazing people here that will help you in your journey.

As for your situation, I will echo some of the prior posters and recommend accutane. Its true that the side effects can be nasty, but so can the side effects of having to constantly endure severe acne. I know where you're at, and i know its not a great place to be. If you're wary of not knowing what accutane will bring to you, may i suggest you take a glance at my accutane log. Its a bit long and rambling at times, but It gives a photographic progression of my acne, general insight into my psychology during my course, and periodical digressions about the side effects affect on me. I will say accutane very handily took care of my quite severe acne, with minimal discomfort.

Stay strong, and i hope you're cure finds you soon. Don't let it get you down, and never lose hope!

P.S. Personal Message me if you have any questions about anything i've said here, in my log, or any where else on the Org. I'm pretty good about responding quickly enough. See ya around!

Thanks for the awesome post AKL! I'll probably make a new post to figure out exactly what I should take for suppliments, I hope I can find a good drugstore around here... I leave tomorrow morning for my next app. I hope it goes well. And wow, The RCRangerposting in my thread?! amazing! aha, I read at least 90% of your accutane blog before I even registered here, and you seem like your kinda a legend on these forums. ;) anyway, I decided not to post new pics cause my face is pissed off again. My left earlobe is big red and swollen like a cyst, this is a new one for me... anyone else ever get this? anyway I'll make sure to post pics after my next app. when I think I've improved a bit.

you're doing everything right. acne is out of your hands or control at this point!!

you need to go see a dermatologist and i bet they will recommend accutane right off the bat.

it's time consuming and maybe expensive but it'll be worth it.

Hi, I am a new member here, although I have frequented this site in the past, and even bought the products for "the regime" which I followed closely. I know this is not the introduction section, but I feel my problem is too severe, and would be better off in this section. Anyway, here's my story:

I am a 20 year old male, 6' 130lbs. I got my first zit when I was around 14-15, and had an acne problem at 18. I can say that my acne has definitely been "severe" for the past year/ year and a half. After I moved out of the house in the summer of 07 my already bad acne become much worse, which I attribute to my poor diet(which was still much better than my rootmates). When I came back to my home town I was so embarrassed that I didn't even greet my friends. And at this most vulnerable time of my life I went out with the family for a dinner, and ran into my ex girlfriend whom I heard from her friends, was still interested in me. I felt so depressed and was near suicidal thoughts, and I finally understood the gravity of my situation.

And so, on the 1st of March I quit my job and I took a break from school, in an attempt to tackle this acne problem once and for all. First, I paid $1,800 for an allergy test, and was surprised to found out I had gastrointestinal allergies to garlic, pork, and beef, which I immediately cut from my diet. I tried to adopt hypoglycemic diet, meaning no white bread or sugars, and few whole grains. I also cut out dairy entirely, as I avoided anything with high iodine content. I started eating fresh fruits and vegetables changing what was predominately a carnivorous diet to a vegetarian diet. Then I started exercising 3-4 times a week. I quit drinking alcohol and smoking pot and now drink lots of water instead. I started taking supplements; omega 3,6,9, vit a,e, b2,6,12, grape seed extract, iron, zinc, and herbal extracts. And throughout the month of April I saw various estheticians, had acid peels and light treatments, laser treatments and even this new ultrasonic treatment.

Then in April my grandmother is Japan was diagnosed with cancer. (I am half Japanese) I flew to Japan and I am still in Japan currently. I managed to continue with my diet and everything else, and I've even been able to try lots of eastern medicines for acne. At first my skin started getting a little better, but after a month it got to a point where it didn't get any better. Then it would fluctuate getting worse or better and I had no idea what the triggers were. Right now its in one of those bad swings and is almost as bad as it was before April. What am I doing wrong? I quit going to estheticians and the harsh treatments because I suspected them of making me worse. I suspected everything. Any food I ate a lot of before a bad swing I'd try cutting out of my diet, but to no avail. Now I still exercise, I still take the supplements, I still have a great hypoglycemic, vegetarian diet, and I don't smoke or drink. I wash my face lightly twice a day but I don't know what I should use on my skin anymore. The only thing I can think of missing from my supplements is taurine, which i can't find.

I'm sorry for the extremely long post but I am just very confused and I'm growing angry at myself. I hate my new diet. I was a meat loving carnivore growing up in the greatest hunting area, Alaska. I hate this suffering, which is both mental and physical. As my acne is so severe my face is constantly in pain, and is also a huge embarrassment to look at. I've gotten rid of all the mirrors in my house so that i couldn't pick at my acne, I even purposefully scuffed anything that was too shiny and reflective. I don't even allow myself the luxury of a warm shower anymore, and now exclusively take cold showers in the attempt to shrink my pores, and to alleviate some of the pain.

Any help or encouragement is appreciated, I hope that by coming to these forums I can clear my mind and find a solution to this miserable problem.

Attached are pics i just took after cutting my hair and getting out of the shower. thats why my forehead is wet.

Wow. I dealt with the same acne back in my teens, I know it can feel pretty hopeless at times. There were times I would just sleep all day, so that I would have the night to help hid my pain.

I know the pain of showers on cysts. I knwo that waking up at night because things bursting, and oozing constanly.

You definitely need to get an oral medication. I refused Accutane every time I was offered it, because I just didn't need the possible side effects, the constant check ups for my liver, or birth control I didn't need, (I'd chosen abstinence years before that,) but would be given because they didn't trust me. Also, c aouple of times a day I would sit with a warm to hot water, and suing cotten balls (not a wash cloth,) and use them to help bring things to ahead and get them to open. This REALLY helped, along with everything else I got from my Derm.

I went on Minocycline a few times, steroids, all sorts of things. I am now on just creams, and I almost never have things under my skin, but classic pimples and whiteheads.

You can clear your skin!

i checked out your pics. sidebar: your eyes are absolutely gorgeous. different things work for different people. i'm not a dermatologist, but maybe you should look into accutane. i was scared beyond belief, based on the possible side effects. however, the effects of acne take their toll on us sufferers as well. i've been on claravis (generic version) for a little more than two weeks. so far, my only side effect is dry skin, which i've addressed w/cetaphil moisturizer. i don't want to say you don't have anything to lose, as i'm not minimizing the possible side effects. instead, i'll say you have so much to gain. it seems as though you've tried everything under the sun. give accutane a chance.

Hi everyone, Ive been avoiding this forum for sometime to try and clear my mind of my troubles. I thought I would post a quick update to show some love to you guys, before my return stateside which is in 3 weeks. My diet has been extremly healthy, and ive been washing my face twice a day like before, and I must say my face has gotten quite a bit better. I have not been able to get any of the suppliments recommended by people on this forum, however I am still taking omega 3,6,9 and A/B/C vitamins.

What has help me a lot is going to a new place I found in Tokyo (not the one I was going to before) where they sat me down and asked me all sorts of personal questions to evaluate what it was that was causing my acne. I realized that I've led a pretty stressed life, my best friend dying from leukemia when i was in grade school, my dad dying next to me duing a plane crash when i was 13, suffering from gynecomastia through middleschool and some of highschool, and this stress most likey is the root cause of my acne. After this evaluation they prescribed me a tea custom made for my needs, which I have to drink 4 times a day, and to be honest, tastes like shit. 'ive been drinking this for about a month now, and they told me they gaurantee I will be completely clear within 6 months.

- also after reading xquis3t's posts about the sun, I abandoned all my biking and the kendo. For a long while I havn't been out in the sun for more than 10mins a day, but I have also not been exercising, apart from the occasional set of curls or pushups.

-there you have it, I still have a lot of red marks, and one cyst poped up on my left cheeck this weeks(had no cysts the week before that one), but for the most part my acne has subsided. I definately feel alot better, and that is more important to me than how I look. hopefully I can get rid of this bullshit without the aid of accutane, but if I'm not clear in 5 more months I will then go for accutane.

-sorry for the scary stare down, im not very photogenic.

also the thing on my neck isnt acne, its a scar from a heart monitor i had while in the icu.

comments and criticism (or compliments like the one above this post ;)) are greatly appreciated.

Hey!!!! Just remember you've got a lot of friends on here who know how you feel. Hang in there no matter what buddy!! I suffered with cystic acne for years until I came on here, now I'm 95-100% clear from the start of this year and I'll take it. It's all from the org and the Nutriton and Holistic Forum, there's a ton of info on there! Check it out!

I'd say keep the exercise going (but not to excess and mix up the routine), make sure of water intake, and positive attitude/meditate.

I use ACV as an astringent once a week, but be careful you might have to dilute it. It's powerful. Also Dickinson's witch hazel is a great nondrying astringent. At night I put on Boudreaux's Butt Paste (no lie!) it's great with the Zinc oxide and Boric Acid. I'd also recomment Dr. Bronner's soaps (available online) and a clay/mudd mask for removing the top layer of dead skin. Queen Helene's Mint Julep mask is great. How is your elimination? I upped my fiber intake and if I break out I do an enema that day. Always helps. The bowels are a major prob for many cystic acne sufferers. Message me if you need further help! Stay positive and see yourself in your mind's eye as having clear skin and think, "I'm attracting clear skin solutions into my life," or something like that. It works, swear.

you can order accutane over the net if u look for it. I too thinnk im going to have to go that route if this tetracycline and differin gel doesnt work. My initial breakout is ridiculous so far so i am having a hard time waiting it out but yeah im not scared to go on tane. theres alot i would risk for good skin again. Anyways if u want the link just post a reply and let me know ok. oh yeah and i ordered my tetracycline and differin over the net instead of waiting months to see a dermatologist and paying all the cash for them to put me on the same thing i got over the net. it was worth it. i think you can get tane for 120 bucks online. dude at least ur acne doesnt look like its scarring you too bad thats a very good thing

Hey there!

I know everyone is so adament on taking accutane around here, (and I have been on it once) but trust me, it worked for a bit, and then all of my acne came back after about a bit over a year. Now, that doesn't happen for everyone, but every person that I know that has taken Accutane, has had their acne come back. So, logically thinking, your acne will most likely come back. I'm not trying to discourage you, but for awhile I wanted to go back on Accutane and then I realized that it's so horrific for your body. It sounds like you're on the right track diet and excersize-wise, and I think you should continue to stick with that. Our bodies were made for natural substances from the earth, not derived supplements that were man-made. I'm going to suggest that you take Turmeric and also try Maca Root. The Turmeric helps with inflammation and it comes in a pill form, and the Maca is for hormonal balance. You'll probably need to take at least 2 pills a day of the Turmeric, and the Maca tastes really good, so you can get it in powder form and put it in soy milk, rice milk, or water. I'm also thinking that you may need to take some digestive enzymes with your meals and/or vitamins. They help you break down what you've been putting in your body for your body to sufficiently digest the nutrients. Also, I've noticed that you aren't taking any type of probiotic. Take Acidophilus!!! You need some sort of good bacteria being put in your body. I know the pain you feel and I will pray for you that you will be able to mentally and physically cope with this. Stay strong, my friend!

EMP:You said "...also after reading xquis3t's posts about the sun, I abandoned all my biking and the kendo", how is that going for you?

I hope that part helps your acne to get better. It is still going in the right direction for me, but I am far from cleared from Acne by doing it, but the Acne is getting better.
