PIH are flat discolorations left from trauma on the skin (including acne or cuts). They generally fade over time depending on the severity of the trauma and the difference of the discoloration and the surrounding skin (3-12 months for most). They are caused by an increase in melanin. Scars can either be indented/pitted or raised (keloids) and have a different texrure and feel (PIH usuall do not unless its a mixture of both). They never really go away, however depending on the severity they may eventually appear to be more filled (if the indented type) or flatten (if the raised type).

To distinguish close your eyes and run your fingers across the traumatized area, if you feel the texture to be the same then its PIH else a scar.
