Im CONFIDENT Silicone injections was the best decision Ive made for my acne scarring.

Recommended Posts

billyboy, back when I was on this lip augmentation board, there was much talk (and praise) for a derm who was masterful with silicone....and not just in the lips ;-) . He's done alot of celebs, apparently. He is located in LA. There is also someone in S.F. (I lived there for 6 years before moving back to Hawaii) who works with silicone....not too sure if she does it for acne scarring or just lips, though. I can revisit that forum and get the name of the doc in LA if you like...

Drewboy: Thanks for the offer. I will keep it in mind, but if I go I would try to fly in and out. It would be nice to meet though.

Pakifairy: thanks for link. I am not sure what to make of it. I several reactions: Good comparisons, some patients have pretty severe scarring, the last male seemed to have the most improvement. He had some sharp ice picks and box scars which turned into rolling scars. In fact, I wonder if he might have had a couple excisions also. I could be way wrong, but the photos show less improvement than I expected, but seemed to help sharp scars more than I thought possible. I thought it was supposed to be best for shallow rolling scars.

hey guys, I think those before & afters show you what kind of doctor dr. lam is, he doesn't try to BS anyone with lighting, photoshop, or gimmicks like some people do.

pakifairy, you really need to send a pic into dr. lam and show him your scarring, he'll be able to evaluate whether or not your scarring will respond. Thats what I did even before I met him

The last male in the pics who got a lot of improvement, actually only had TCA cross done, if you click on the pics it says what they had. I think the girls who had three rounds of silicone actually had more improvement then I did with two rounds from Alkek. If I were to get this done again I would definitely go to Dr. Lam. But I think people are downplaying the risks a little on this thread. I have read a lot of the literature as well, as well as people who have written saying they have had problems with the microdroplet method, the pure silicone, it can migrate, can cause granulomas, may cause unwanted lumpiness, etc. no death though. I thought I might have gotten a granuloma after the first round, but it might just have been a weird cyst. Also, when you look at the pics of people who have had silicone the most improvement comes from those without a clear definition to their scars. My scars have a clear definition, although they do disappear when stretched. I'm starting to think even though Dr. Alkek said I was a candidate I'm really not the best candidate. I'm happy for you Drewboy that you have had so much success!

does anyone know if it's safe to be a boxer/kickboxer and get punched or kicked in the face, in areas that have been injected w/ silicone? would it shift the silicone and make your face all lumpy?

drewboy, when you rub your hands along your face, can you feel the silicone, or does it just feel smooth?

Is it just me or does anybody else think the b4/after photos of Dr Lam's arent that impressive .I mean the improvements are between 10% to 40% at most from those pics and I'm sure those are the best results displayed.I hear of members reporting almost perfect scarless skin but I havent seen any photos yet.I 've seen photos with better improvements with the fraxel. Are there b4/after photos from the other famous docs like Dr Soren White,Dr Alkek,Dr Orentreich that we see and compare?

I've been doing my homework on Dr. Lam and I am very impressed with him personally.

I wish there was someone like him here in Los Angeles or Orange County or even San Diego.

Has anyone heard of a really good silicone droplet doctor in southern California?

Thanks so much in advance!

Tomster

That is what I was thinking happymelon, obviously the patients have had improvements but nothing major then again most of their scaring is severe. I hope the people on this thread have had better improvement. The person with the most improvement seems to be the guy who got TCA cross only.

On a side note for those that have scarring would you say it is similar to that of the patients? If so which? In my case the are to severe compared to my scars.

Okay, it has been almost 24 hours since my first visit to Dr Lam. So far so good!

Just as Drew described, he is a very personable and straight-forward guy. His staff are also very friendly. After looking at my face for 30 seconds, he told me that I was gonna get good result with silicone injection. He actually pinpointed the scars that would likely respond well. Most of them are rolling-type depressed ones. He said silicone wouldn't work on large-pore like holes, which i have a few. He told me that I'd probably only need 2 treatments. He was very honest and candid. He even said to me"this treatment will never make you skin perfect. I don't want to waste your money. If at one point I think you can't get more improvement, please allow me to cut you off." The consultation only took less than 10 minutes. I chose to get treated immediately.

His assistant put numb cream on my cheeks then I waited for about 45 minutes. Before the injection started, dr Lam asked me what music i wanted to listen? I said jazz. I definitely don't want rock & roll while my face gets injected. :) With the nice background jazz, the injection itself lasted about 5 minutes. Somehow my face didn't feel very numb, so it did hurt a bit, but nothing unbearable.

My face didn't look too bad right after injection. Some swelling and reddish spots. They calmed down quite a bit in a few hours. Right now, other than a few purplish/bluish spots, my face looks really nice. I'm trying not to get too excited because I know swelling effects are still there. I will update my condition in a few days. I hope my result will be as good as Drew's. :)

When I saw Dr. Alkek that is how my treatment went, minus the jazz. He said I would only need two treatments said I would respond and then injection and aftermath went as you said. The swelling does really fill up the depressions but it will slowly go back to normal. After having two treatments I only saw an improvement of maybe 20-30% and I did get a cyst in one injection spot which lasted awhile. This was a spot that I didn't even think looked really scarred, Dr. Alkek just took liberty to inject everything he noticed, although I only really care about three big scars. If I were to do it again I would only let those areas get injected.

Let us know how you do and share pics if you can, Thanks

Drew and everyone else, I was wondering why you all are considering silicone and not another filler. I am not familiar with these procedures but in many before and afters the best results I have seen are those of fat injections, ans sculptra.

I don't have any acne scar pics saved but I do have some others I used for a class report.

I know they are not of acne scarring but, they do have a sunken effect like rolling scars.

On a side note Drew in your 3rd pic you have a rolling scar around the libial fold on the right side, I was wondering what kind of success you have had with that scar. I have a very simialr scar and would love to do something about it.

I have read that silicone is actually better for acne scars because you can manipulate it better by injecting the tiny microdroplets spread out, where I think sculptra is not as easy to manipulate like that, it is probably for wider creases and not smaller areas like acne scars. Also sculptra is more money, that made a difference for me. But it is FDA approved, where silicone is not for use in the face. It is actually illegal for doctors to advertise the use of silicone for cosmetic purposes.

Leon, my swelling went away within a few days and my dark marks faded fast as well. The improvement is so gradual after that, that you really do need to keep pics to look back on because you probably won't one day just look in the mirror and notice the difference. At least that's how it was with me.

After doing some research, I believe that my few tiny icepicks will not respond to silikon 1000....which I'm ok with, because they aren't really noticeable and it is this big depression in my cheek which needs more attention. I can't wait to get it done next week. The doc said a couple rounds should suffice. Silikon, like ANY filler, permanent or non, has its share of risks (what doesn't?). I have actually read about far more complications with things like fat transfer, such as uneven reabsorption causing lumpiness, complete dissipation, etc. It's a crap shoot. For as long as I've been on the lip augmention board, complications from silikon have been nil. Not to say that it doesn't happen (because it does), but I think it's a safer bet than many others. I love the fact that it's permanent! And yes, the price is right, that's for sure. It varies from doc to doc, but I pay 250.00 a round.

I also read in multiple sources that silicone is the most effective filler available for treating acne scarring. It's not that good for stuff like wrinkles. In fact, some PS who offer silicone injection say they would do it only on acne scarring and lips. My understanding is that compared with other fillers, silicone microdroplet can be placed very precisely with the greatest control. That makes a big difference.

Yes, that makes a huge difference! Going slow and precise. Other fillers are just too viscous and can be visible beneath the skin. I do know a woman who, besides her lips, had it injected in the hollows beneath her eyes. You know how some people, especially as they age, get that hollowing? She no longer has it. It has completely plumped up those areas and she's thrilled. No lumps, no migration, just total smoothness. She did it two years ago.

Dr. Wirtzer actually does fill fine lines in the face, although I'm not too sure how I feel about that. Acne scars? Yes! But lines? Hmmm....I think I'd opt for a lift instead ;). Here's his page on silicone (and yes, I did read that article on him in Vogue magazine ;)):

I'm from Northern California, and I'm thinking about flying out to Dr Lam. Does anyone recommend me to a local guy, or would it be worth it to fly out for $300, rent a car, and spend $600 each visit?

Enoch,

I'd say my swelling & bruise have gone down about 80%. Earlier this week, it WAS bad! I felt very embarrassed when I went to work. Some quite obvious purplish/bluish/reddish spots all over my cheeks. It's getting much better now. I still have a few dark/red spots as well as some small bumps. They look just like a few fading breakouts. Unless you study my face closely, I don't think you would be able to tell I had something done. Based on the information I got from this forum, it may take a few more days for my face to heal 100%. Please keep in mind, everybody is different. Some people bruise easier than others.

As far as my improvements go, it's still too early to say. My scars definitely look better. But that's probably due to the remaining 20% of swelling. If the treatment works, the depressions will mostly be filled in with my own collagen, not the silicone. Normally, people don't start to see the real result until 3rd week or even later. That's when your collagen start to build up around the silicone droplets. I will definitely keep you guys updated.
