Dates of Discovery concerning Acne

Thought this is interesting. It shows how far research has come in finding the cause of acne.

1965 - 1st evidence of Acne and the role that Androgens play as a subject of published research http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.f...st_uids=4221206 (no available abstract)

1970 - this is the first study that provides an available abstract and mentions how Androgen Excess has been found to increase Acne & Hirsutism http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.f...st_uids=4252699

1977 - Unexpected discovery of Insulin & Glucose role on Sex Hormone production http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.f...ist_uids=193114

1978 -“ Dermatologic Indications for Anti-androgenic Treatment†http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.f...list_uids=82309

1986 - possible 1st evidence of Puberty being a function of Insulin Resistance

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.f...st_uids=3523245

1993 - Insulin Resistance & Puberty http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.f...st_uids=8262487

2000 - Hyperandrogenism & Insulin Resistance in Women

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.f...t_uids=11595827

2004 - Androgen Excess & associated symptoms http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.f...t_uids=14764747

2004 - Insulin Resistance & Androgens http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.f...t_uids=15292348

I can't believe that research has only been going on for such a short period when acne has been around forever. Imagine what kind of state we could be at with drugs and general awareness of acne factors in definitive proof if it was taken seriously, long ago.

How has acne been around forever?

Anyway, thanks for posting Dotty. The puberty-insulin resistance study was really interesting. (It also has a line in there about how increased insulin = less growth hormone = less IGF-1, which was what I was trying to tell you in that other thread.)

i remember reading they were using vitamin a in the early 1900s to treat people with acne until they found out it was potentially toxic in megadoses

This study says otherwise:

http://joe.endocrinology-journals.org/cgi/...tract/128/3/389

"These results demonstrate that insulin and GH interact synergistically to stimulate IGF-I production in vitro. The synergism with GH occurred at physiological concentrations of insulin with half-maximal stimulation occurring at an insulin concentration of 6 ng/ml."
