I mix 1/4 cup witch hazel with 1 tbsp. of aloe vera (100%) and 10 drops of tea tree oil. This amount lasts for awhile. I simply put it on a few times a day with a cotton ball. It seems to dry out the lesions faster, for me at least.

If you just want the effects of the Witch Hazel, you can buy buy Witch Hazel Extract ( the one you bought contains alcohol ) it does not contain any alcohol. Mix it with Aloe Gel and its a great non irritating toner. Great for very sensitive skin.

Most of the witch hazels contain 14% alcohol. If yours does, I would dilute with water so it's gentler (50-50 works nicely for me).
