is there any hope?

Recommended Posts

hey, i just wanted to get some things off my chest as this seems like the place to do it. Im 20yrs old and have been suffering from acne for 5yrs. This condition has destroyed me; there's no other way to describe it. Before i started getting minor pustules I never appreciated the freedom clear skin could give you- such as having amazing self-confidence and being able to dash out the door 5min after you wake up. However after 5yrs of being imprisoned in my own body Im afraid to leave my room, let alone walk outside the house. Im currently trying erythromycin in tablets but they dont seem to be doing much because my face seems to get worse each day- whilst my g.p prescibed salicylic acid as a cream that just seems to burn as soon as I put it on.

Perhaps the biggest changes acne has inflicted upon is the way I go about everyday life. Although Im male, the only way i've been able to live a social life is by using foundation on a daily basis- but this acts in two ways. First, whilst it gives me self-confidence to go out with my friends, I know it exacerbates my current acne so as soon as i take it off, my skin will be 10X worse. Second, im plagued with feelings with guilt about it, as none of my friends no I where make-up, whilst my gf at the time left me the second i confided in her. im thinking of dropping out of university as the only way people no me is through the clear skin version of myself when im wearing foundation; i just dont have the courage to look at them as I actually am.

So i feel like i've lied to everyone i've met in the last 5yrs as they've never seen the real me- this thought makes it impossible for me to show my friends as i am without foundation, as i know their perception of me would change immediately. I hate myself so much that i now smoke almost incessantly because im so sick of the ways things are and as i see it, not having a future without clear skin. anyway, thanx for your time.

I think the foundation version of you is more the real you.....

someone who is less inhibited to express their unique personality in a natural way.....

It's the acne that is not the real you....... just an annoying condition that has victimized you for several years....

wear make up, continue school, and fight the acne battle with whatever new advances come your way.......

That must have been awful to have your girlfriend leave you due to your wearing foundation! What is her problem? How rude.

Have you tried Dermablend? A little goes a long way, and it is waterproof. And if anyone ever noticed, I'd tell them that it is a colored acne medication from my dr. You are not obligated to tell any of your friends about the products you use on your face. I can see that you might want to mention it to a girlfriend, in case some of it comes off when you're kissing ;) . If you feel like it's lying, then put a drop of acne medicine (benzoyl peroxide or something) into the makeup as you put it on. Now you're wearing a skin-toned acne medication!

If your face is clean when you put it on, then a non-comedogenic makeup should not make your face any worse. If it does, then try a different type of makeup. I've never had any trouble with Dermablend.

Please don't let your acne define you. Many of us had/have acne and can still lead semi-normal lives. You can, too!

Please work on giving up smoking. It will only make matters worse.

If your E Mycin isn't working for you, perhaps your dr. will rx something stronger. Are you using any topicals as well (like Retin A for example)?

"Afraid to leave the house," "smoking incessantly," "plagued with guilt" etc. are phrases often used by someone who is suffering from clinical depression or OCD. Perhaps you should mention these things to your dr.

There are many acne meds available to help you have clear skin. If none of the other treatments help, there's always Accutane.

Don't give up hope!

Thank you for such kind advice, its a great relief to know that people can empathise with my situation and to know that at least im not alone. I have never tried dermablend but will definitely investigate this further as im currently using a non-comedogenic foundation from estee-lauder that nevertheless does seem to make my skin worse after excessive use.

What is your problem? if you want to be facetious about this topic then I suggest you do so by yourself, in a dark corner, as your comments are not wanted.

Try Smoothbeam laser; it is not a 100% cure but will make your situation bearable until this condition is cured in the next few years.
