Huge Open Pores. :(

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I'll get straight to the point. I have incredibly large pores on my nose. I'm a 22 year old male and have oily skin. I also used to have really bad anxiety during my teens which would also get me extremely flustard and make me sweat alot. Weird thing is I don't or never really had bad acne.

Now I know most guys have bigger pores. This is not something new to me but mine are HUGE. I have never ever seen anyone with as big or as many pores as me. This is saying a lot too since I have worked in construction and factory jobs so i've seen a lot of people with big pores. I can literally put the blunt end of a sewing pin in my pores and have it stay there. I can probably say that the holes on my nose take up more surface area then the "normal" skin. That's just how bad it is.

This problem really bothers me at times and I get pretty depressed about it. I try not to think of it which usually helps but then i'll see my reflection outside in a mirrior/window and i'm just like "Dam, i'm one ugly mother f***er". I tend to stay further away from people when talking to them (at least when i'm outside in natural light) and this really hurts me in the girls department.

So I have thought of a couple extremes to fix my problem. If anyone has any experience with any of these or if you just wanna comment that would be nice.

I know that victums to animal attacks who get skin torn off can have "skin graphs". Is this something I could do to fix this problem? Is it possible to have the skin replaced on your nose?

Burning. I have seriously thought of getting a knife red hot on the stove and just burning my skin. I personally would rather have a burn scar/mark on my nose but I don't think I could take the pain and it's probably not a smart idea anyway.

Slicing. Basicly just taking a large knife and putting a big gash in my nose. The idea being that a scar will appear afterwards covering up my pores. Again, probably not a smart idea.

Really, the skin graph is my only option if it's even possible but then again I doubt I could ever afford something like that. I guess this was just more of a rant since I know i'm pretty much stuck with this problem but if anyone has any encouraging words of wisdom that would be great.

Hey there -

Saw your post and totally identify. I'm female and have smooth, normal skin and pores, except for my nose. It looks like a straweberry! My hubby even has smooth skin all over, but has larger pores on his nose. I hate my nose at times, but you know, everyone has flaws. I'm critical of my nose (pores) a lot too. Atleast, I don't have scars, birthmarks, or other ailments, so I am thankful. Things could be worse. You can make your pores look cleaner and tighter though!!

What topicals or masks do you have? Skincare? Know you are a guy, but do you know a good facialist or near a salon or spa? Honest, getting a facial (by good facial) once a month to clear out and deep clean the pores is awesome!! Also, things that have helped tighten and clear my pores, are products like Renova or Retin A micro. These are creams/lotions that can be used at night. Cleansers and/or mild toners with salicylic acid (Paula's Choice has a great toner/exfoliant) help clear out and tighten pores. A few good cleansers I've used, are Neostrata PHA 4% (has polyhydroxy acid versus harsher glycolic acid) and PCA Mild Lactic Acid cleanser (bought at Derm Store on the internet) which is very effective. Also, a good mask I use is Dermalogica's Skin Refining mask. When I don't use masks often, my pores look larger and darker (more sebum in there). It tightens the pores but doesn't strip the skin and make you all red. I find mild, effective products work best, some harsher products, make the skin redder... I also have had some IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treatments and the treatments even the skin tone and tighten pores a little. I'm sure there are other treatments too, but not aware right off hand. Worth looking into further maybe.

Good luck and let us know how things go. Take care.

You're not alone kraz. My nose is also a huge, seemingly irreversible mess, with black heads and brown spots that resemble backheads everywhere. I've also thought about doing something extreme like getting a skin graph or "nose replacement", if there's such a thing. I may try laser soon, anything that will help a bit. FYI I just purchased Paula's BHA to see if that may help, but in the end, I know I need something drastic.

Good luck,

I currently don't really have any kind of skin regimen besides the basic splash my face with luke warm water 20 times when I get up(unless I shower), sometime during lunch and before I go to bed then pat dry.

I do have this Clean and Clear Daily Blackhead Wash and this Neutrogena moisturizer but I rarely use those. Mostly becasue I have oily skin so moisturizer's are not really needed plus I find from the few i've used they leave my face with a shine and a layer of a weird film-like feeling. I was using the Daily Blackhead wash every other day for about 2 weeks. Then I just kinda stoped for some reason I don't really know why, lazyness I guess. It did make my skin feel a bit better but it didn't shrink my pores which is what I mostly want. Plus I was reading that nothing you do will ever shrink your pores. It's genetics. Even surgerys won't fix it (micro, skin peels) permenently. You can only make them appear to be smaller by keeping them clean. So that kinda set me off track.

You see, I mostly just have large open voids/craters in my nose. They appear to be blackheads casue how the sunlight/natural light reflects on them but most of them are empty (at least on the outside appearance, if I squeeze I bit of crap will come out). The skin surrounding the proes is also really rough looking. Mostly cause I used to squeeze with my finger tips/nails really hard when I was younger. Very bad idea, so if any you young guys/girls reading this, stay away from "popping" them. Even though it's looks/feels good for the time being it only hurts you in the long run.

So ya, I dunno, I guess suicide is always an option. haha j/j, it don't bother me THAT much, but ya, it's nice to know other people can relate.

Mandelic acid not only helps to exfoliate the pores, it has a skin-tightening effect as well. While it is on your face, it will make your skin look more taut and your pores look smaller.

I use Vivant 9% mandelic toner all over my face, neck and chest each morning. I also use the 15% serum on my forehead, cheeks and jaw. It's like an instant face lift. :)

I am not sure how far mandelic will go to counter-act the look of badly scarred pores, however.

Slice your skin off? What the hell? Doesn't accutane make your pores smaller? overdosing b5 should also do that I think

I tried various Mandelic acid product over a month period and did not see any results/

NuCelle, Garden of Wisdom, Mama Lotion in their 15% range. I had some purging from it but by the 4th week and then stopping, no noticable change in pore size or black heads.

I guess it works for some and not others.

I suggest if trying Mandelic to order samples on ebay or on line since you do not want to waste it if it does not work

4 weeks is not really enough time to see results. Any new product should be tested for at least 6 weeks, preferably 8-12 (unless it is causing serious irritation, of course).

Exfoliation and purging are slow processes.

my pores are amazingly huge and I'm a female! My skin could pass off as a guy's skin because guys' skin is general more oily and porous and rough. I am still waiting for a miracle serum to reduce pore sizes. I've read lasers work, like the Specktra laser which claims to reduce oil production and pore sizes if done once a while. I'm a poor student so I can't afford all these for now.. so now I try to cover them up with makeup. Doesn't work much though as I don't use primer because I do'nt want too much stuff on my face.

Hi Kraz and anyone else bothered by this problem:

Been there - you are not alone. I too have have had a large pore thing with similar feelings and thoughts as you – We may let it affect our self picture, confidence, and self esteem. Im normaly a pretty rugged guy and it really bothered me to have to even think about a cosmetic issue. You and others sound pretty deperate and I understand. But know that - it does not have to be the end of the world as I have had a very good career and have been happily married to a very attractive woman for over 10 years and she has never mentioned pores once.

The pore thing started for me when I was about 22. Is it just coincidense that I drank allot of coffee and alcohol, and ate fast foods? and with somewhat oily skin and was out in the sun all the time? I was badly sun burned multiple times. The sun destroys the collagen and elasticity in the skin.

I learned at least part of following regiment from someone else on the web and I modifired it - it's pretty inexpensive and easy, and it seems that it works pretty fair for the pore problem. Its not bad to follow even for a guy. It is not perfect but it is the only thing that I found that comes at all close to working.

You will need to buy the following products – the cost is not much as they all last a very long time.

1. A prescription for Clindamycin Phosphate Topical Solution 1% (it is not too expensive)

2. An over the counter topical solution that contains 2 % salicylic acid. Such as Clean and Clear Acne Spot Treatment made by Johnson and Johnson.

3. Cetaphil face wash.

4. Box of Biore nose strips.

Use one Biore strip on your nose. About every 6 days.

Then do the following every day - once in the morning and once in the evening.

1. Gently wash your face and nose with cold water and the cetaphyil face wash.

2. Pat your face dry. Let it dry for a few minutes.

3; Then dab on the Clindamycin with the applicator to your nose and face and wait a couple of minutes until it dries.

4. Then apply the 2% salicylic acid product of your choice to your nose and face and forget about it and go on with your day.

(The Clindamyycin and salicylic acid work together – they do little by themselves!)

The improvement will take a few weeks or more – be very patient so don’t keep looking at your nose. And don’t expect miracles.

The improvement you can expect is gradual, your pores may still be visible but are likely to look some degree better, and cleaner. The pores may produce much less gunk. There is a good chance that you will be comfortable with the improvement.

I read of one person on the internet who said they had a great deal of improvment from just using the Clindamycin Phosphate, and a J&J 2 % salicylic acid prodcut at bed time - as long as they kept it up.

(Note - It be a possible that a Topical prescription product called Retinaldehyde may also be of some benefit as the claims are that it helps the skin to repair itself. I have not used it. Research it first. You have to be very careful about going in the sun if you are going to use it. Id wait a while and see if all you need is the above regiment)

Tips

Be gentle with your nose and face in every way. Do everthing listed in moderation!

Don’t ever use very hot or burning water on your face ever. Luke warm or cold is best.

Don’t use bar soap or harsh soap on your face.

Avoid the sun, and sun burn or if you must use a strong gentle, greaseless sun screen.

Minimize or cut out acidy products especially coffee, caffeine and alcoholic beverages.

Try to maintain eight hours of sleep every night.

Never squeeze your nose and keep your hands off as much as possible as you will be causing skin trauma and contaminating the pores with bacteria which agrivates the problem. Let the Biore strips do the work for you and don’t over use them - 6 days is good.

Know that when you look in a mirror – you are not seeing yourself as others see you. Most mirrors have lighting placed like an interrogation - exaggerating your nose and creating shine and shadows. Also we tend to look closer and focus on our nose in a mirror then any other person ever would. Stand at a normal distance.

Please don’t cut your nose or burn it or scar it in anyway. You cannot dig out a pore – its impossible. Scars will only make it worse. A scar will be white with no elasticity and the pores will still be there - only they will be even bigger and look very much more obvious.

I can’t speak for lasers. Id be interested to meet one person who tried it and could say it worked - until then…before and after pictures would be nice, - never seen one.

There is a ailment called rosacea which affects the skin on the face and especailly the nose - alchohal agrivates it. Research it on the web and make sure you dont have it.

Please write back and let me and people know if the above regiment helped or not. Remember it may take a month or more.

Best of luck to you!

I copied the following diet information from the web. I have no idea to it validity. It was written by a nutritionist named Elizabeth Gibed.

Do you have any acne on/in your noise.

I have no noticeable acne on the top of my noise.

But I do know that I could squeeze and get out some nasty black heads. Thinking *How could all that fit in there*

So clear your nose out first.

Secondly get to sweating.

The human body, was perpetually made to sweat. Other than the brain, this is the reason for our species dominance, so we can sweat of the heat, rather than animals who have minimal sweat glands or make do with heat exchange of the tongue/ears/ect. So go to a sauna (A sauna is just a really hot room that you sit in, not the steam sauna with all the mist.)

This should help your skin a lot.

As for the pore size, if sweating/cleaning does not work, try cold baths.

NOT ice baths, but a cold bath (45F to 68F). This will close your pores and make them smaller. t Does take to get used to though, you might not have the will (Is that a challenge!). Disclaimer is you could go into shock, but generally laughable unless you fill it up enough to drown in, and shock is more of a below ice temp thing. That and it does not last for ever.

I take them regularly and it also helps with inflammation and to the debate of others, muscle soreness.

Try it out. (You could also just stick your face in a bin full of cold water, just for your face. Kinda hard to hold your breath for 10 minutes though, as is general time in an ice bath, also considering that your getting some water on the pores of your nose.)

Hey man...I really feel you on this....my pores are HUGE , stretched out, and Red inside...they are so large, you can LITERALLY see inside them.

and they sweat/produce oil constantly. there is not a moment in my day that my nose is dry ...somethin is always draining out...and it makes my pores more noticeable. I stay out various shades of light. Day time...and a few feet away from people...sometimes, ill subconsciouslly hold my hand in front of my nose or find something to do if someone is talkin to me...ill merge away if they are too close...

it is haunting.

And get this, I am a/WAS a video spokesperson/interviewer for a music website...but after strugglin with constant leaking/shine and sweating...They gave up on me. Now i work behind the scenes when it was WHAT I LOVED to do...

its very uncomfortable interviewing a new artist and then watchin the play back n seeing beads of sweat or dots of oil glistening..and its all in HD. So i even see their eyes trailing down to my nose n back up.

Its very frustrating and life draining. I am about 3 years behind in everything life has to offer cuz i dont go out if they are really red or irritated sometimes...

My nose skin has thickened, and has become more bulbous. It dont feel like my nose anymore.

I dont mean to steal ur post, but i just want to let you know that you are not alone.

I have ANOTHER derm appt for possible rososcea/rhynophima monday.

Its such a struggle, i miss family gatherings, partys, anything fun really unless its in a dark setting.

And my really good friends have no problem pointing them out and commenting on them...

my nose is destructive to my well being.

I have contemplated gettin a razor n making 1 long slice downwards on a cluster or pores just to see how it would heal..the worse it could do is scar right? or perhaps cut the pore in half? haha.

wtvr... No topical creams have worked...im up to differen .03% ---might try the tazorac or wtvr this next appt.

the only thing i can think of is goin internal to fix the problem...they have to have something to shring the sweat/oil glands in the nose!!! then a possible skin graph or something...

Microdermabrasions n IPL lasers dont work for this problem. Been there, done that.

Msg me if you wanna keep in touch, wel trade pics
