Are topical retinoids a last resort?

Are they a last resort if everything you've tried doesnt work for you? Or are they only for really severe acne? I've had persistant acne for years and BP is the only thing that keeps my acne at bay but its not clearing my face up 100%. I've tried a lot of OTC stuff and nothings really worked effectively for me except for BP. I mostly had a lot of papules and pustules but after using BP I only get maybe one or two here and there sometimes. I mostly have comedonal acne and I plan on trying out Paula's Choice to see if that can help clear the rest of my face. I need your opinions based on experience and knowledge.

no! they aren't a last resort at all, treatments like retin a are common and very effective for comedonal acne. just be patient. drugs like accutane are considered to be a last resort, not topicals.
